“Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.”

SEPTEMBER TEARS – SOPHIE ZELMANI
ON THIS DAY
On this day I could hardly see
but my other senses compensated me
I had my retinopathy
examination; drops that half-blinded me
they open up the eye to light
so sensitive to the sun
I donned a pair of sunglasses
I wanted to flee; I wanted to run
blurry scenes; I could not drive
a friend drove me to the sea
he guided me to the water's edge
he was my eyes; he accompanied me
I could hear the birds
I could hear all the words
of the many people who enjoyed this day
an Indian Summer's day had come
to warm our hearts and comfort some
the feelings were intense; it felt like May
beneath my dark glasses I squinted and blinked
just as well the man next to me did not see me wink
my friend shouted there's a kayak way out by the buoys
I lifted my glasses; tried to focus on the joys
usually my eyes are fairly keen
and nothing much escapes me
I've got intuition by the bucket load
it compensated for me visually
later that day when I got home
and my eyes began to clear
I checked my pictures excitedly
wondering had my instincts overcome my fears
looking at each frame I was filled with wonder
hardly a blurred image in sight
even though I stumbled and I blundered
an angel caught my arm; caught a bird in flight
angel's come in many guises
I am fortunate to have one always
guiding me through my many crises
cushioning my fall along external pathways
even in the dark I am not afraid
I can see my way so clearly
because true sight does not depend
on just the eyes to see
but from deep within our souls
and the angels who love us dearly.

I like poking around my archive to see what I was capturing on the same day in the past. This one is from January 8, 2020.

This is the fourth day of my #VirtualVacation where I travel around the world reliving past adventures and sharing new images photographed #OnThisDay through the years. January 30th, 2017 was my first full day in Ndutu. And it was incredible. The species that really captured my attention was the Cheetah. In Ndutu there were families ranging in ages from just a few weeks old to more than a year. With a mortality rate of 70% in the wild, it was wonderful to see this older family of four siblings still thriving. We sat watching while they played, practicing their hunting skills. Then, one-by-one they lined up in a row. Well, just about. There’s always one trouble-maker! We have a couple more days in Ndutu before a brief respite back in the US and then back for more African wildlife. Stay tuned!
Behold, the striking red eye of the Black-winged kite. Also commonly referred to as the black-shouldered kite, these medium-sized raptors can often be seen hovering in open savannahs in search of small rodents, reptiles and insects. We met up with these beautiful kites during both trips to Africa and, surprisingly, this is the first image I’ve shared. Photographed #OnThisDay, February 3, 2017
On this day, January 27, in 2018, My friend Shalese and I met up at Sax-Zim Bog in Minnesota in search of winter owls. Our prime target was the great gray, but we had also hoped to find a Northern Hawk Owl and, if really lucky, a Boreal Owl. Well, we didn’t get that lucky, but the Hawk Owl played a recurring role throughout our weekend sojourn. Meet Hank. Hank is a permanent resident of the northern latitudes and winters in the, er, balmy climate of America’s North Woods. This begins what I hope will be a fun little look back, featuring never before shared photos photographed #OnThisDay throughout the years. Stay tuned because tomorrow we head to Africa 2017!
Wishing you all a Happy Superb-Owl Sunday! Hoping your favorite team wins!
This is a Verreaux's Eagle-owl photographed before sunrise one morning in Ndutu. Breaking from my #OnThisDay posts, this was actually photographed on February 3, 2017. Here is a little info about the VEO from an earlier post: "Although a very common Owl in sub-saharan Africa, we rarely saw them out in the open. More often they were perched high up in trees with lots of obstruction or distracting backgrounds. This was a very exciting find. Also known as the Giant Eagle-owl, this species is large at a height of approximately two feet but not actually the largest of the owls. It is a nocturnal hunter preying on medium-sized mammals and large birds such as the Hammerkop and Secretary Bird. Ndutu, Tanzania. February 3, 2017
The Midnight Ride - Impressionistic... somewhat abstract interpretation of an historical event.
One if by land, two if by sea!
OnThisDay in 1775, Paul Revere and more than a dozen riders made their midnight rides to warn that the British were approaching.
Paul Revere's midnight ride, April 18, 1775.
On this night in 1775, Paul Revere was instructed by the Sons of Liberty to ride to Lexington, Mass., to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were marching to arrest them...

Taking comfort from the presence of its mama, this weeks-old Cheetah cub peers warily out at the plains. This sweet baby is the only surviving cub of what was likely a brood of three or four. Mortality rate is high due to a variety of reasons, including human encroachment and shrinking and fragmenting habitat. This cub appeared to be very cautious, a trait critical to ensuring its survival. Photographed #OnThisDay, February 2, 2017.
On this day January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Aaron Presley was born. The date is imprinted on my brain because my cousin Gillian, told me in the late 50's that she was going to run away to America to marry Elvis on his birthday and I needed to remember the date forever :D. Of course she never did run away but I always remember his birthday.
I thought I'd remember "The King" and represent one of his classic songs to mark the date. Return to Sender was released in September 1962 and made No.1 in the UK charts and No. 2 on the American Billboard charts.
I knew saving this stamp would be useful one day. Uh huh huh.
#OnThisDay: February 4, 2014 was a brilliantly sunny day, much like today. Running late for a meeting, I had been rushing to get out the door when I heard several crows excitedly calling in my backyard. I rushed around the house, looking through various windows, when I finally spotted the culprit. A merlin had captured a dove, right in my backyard! It was then perched on the ground working furiously to remove feathers. I had been new to photography and wildlife and still figuring things out. One thing I did know was that I was going to miss my meeting. I spent several minutes watching from the house through an open window. Eventually, the merlin flew to a nearby tree where it continued its work, (see link in comments). More than an hour later, the merlin had enough and flew off. That was the first merlin I had ever seen in my backyard, or at least, had noticed. Hats off to the crows for the tip-off! Keep your ears alert because nature calls.
During our final game drive through Ngorongoro Crater, we encountered a pair of Thomson's Gazelles engaged in a little playful sparring. This lasted for several minutes as they tirelessly pulled back and then lunged forward. This was just a form of play as these young males inched toward maturity. As adults, these ungulates will compete in a constant battle for dominance over other males. Photographed #OnThisDay, February 10, 2017

This was a bit difficult to edit given the conditions, and in the end, I have done a sky replacement via Photoshop to simply make it work (of sorts) given its an 12 year old frame!!! 😂😂😂 N761CX is an ex American Airlines B767-223, and at 37.9 years young, its STILL active today!!!
#NPS106 - Happy Founders Day! The Organic Act became law #onthisday in 1916 formally creating the National Park Service.
What to say about our favorite government agency on this, its 106th anniversary? The only thing to say, I suppose; that the National Park Service is perhaps our most noble endeavor. What we choose to save on our planet reveals what kind of species we are. Shall we save our tallest mountains? Our deepest canyons? Our oldest trees? Our waters and our skies and our lands and our history? Even our mistakes? Even the most ugly instances of where our culture has stumbled so that we may learn from them and improve? Yes. All that and more. In these uncertain times, when many are actively questioning the purpose and functionality of the National Park Service, may we always remember that what we choose to save about the land and our past is what we choose to save about ourselves. The National Parks are our best idea because they are OUR democratic spaces and they reflect OUR inclusivity and diversity.
May the NPS have its best days before it.
Happy 106th anniversary!

The iridescent and silver crashing of the waves against the pink granite of the coast. An exacting wall of evergreens and pines perched on top of the rocks, and thrusting into the sky, spangled with sunset hues. A grey and moody island, draped in fog and mist, defining the horizon. Acadia National Park is the perfect example of the picture book perfection and sublimity found in a National Park.

Love this shot with the hotels in the background!
Behold the mighty African Baobab! Looming to heights as tall as 82 feet, these unique trees make even the tallest living mammals look like miniatures. An adult masai giraffe, like the one pictured, would likely measure between 15-18 feet in height. I photographed this tree #OnThisDay, January 28, 2017, in Tarangire National Park. This is day 2 of my virtual vacation as I sift through old adventures in search of images not previously published and sharing them on the day they were photographed. Stay tuned for more features arriving, hopefully, daily!

Last summer I shared a story about my magical encounter with a Short-eared Owl and subsequent experiences that taught me a valuable lesson in file storage, disk failure and its ultimate restoration. Files can't always be restored, and it took me more than three years to recover these. I'll never forget my awe when sharing a private moment with this beautiful owl. Even better, I'm so grateful that I have the photos, once again, to remember the details. More about this tale, my 2020 peregrine experience that led me to recover these photos and my lessons learned my blog "Lost and Found and the Shot-eared Owl". Photographed #OnThisDay February 17, 2017.
#OnThisDay On 30 November 1609, Galileo Galilei used his telescope for the first time to study the Moon.
Galileo, at that time in Padua, Italy, turned his telescope toward the Moon, noted the irregularities of the crescent face, and made a drawing to record his discoveries. He made at least five more drawings of the Moon over the next eighteen days, prepared careful watercolour sketches from these drawings, and then selected four of these to be engraved for publication in the following March.
