I had no set plan for the On The Job build challenge over at LUGNuts so I asked the first person to respond to give me a random assignment. A certain Marioman3138 stepped up to the plate and asked for an Australian Holden Ute converted into a camera car. He didn’t specify classic or modern so I went with a 2010. The project fascinated me as the modern Ute is what our El Caminos would look like had we kept them around. The modern car-truck is a phenomenon completely unknown in the US so it was great to get a chance to build one. Camera cars are used to film or photograph other cars, whether standing still or racing down the track, and are painted all black so that they do not reflect in the subject car’s paint job.

A house outside of Orla, Texas is illuminated in the front by a saltwater disposal facility and a gas flare four miles away in the rear. Ambient light from oil and gas operations in rural Reeves and Loving Counties cast a 24-hour shadow. While standing in this one spot I counted 56 flares and 6 drilling rigs, not including what was blocked by the structures around me.
To give you an idea of how rural this area is, the closest town Orla, is 12 miles away and had a population of 60 at the last census. The entire county of Loving has a population of 135. There are no streetlights in these parts of the state.
