The Burlington-Bristol Bridge, a strong truss bridge across the Delaware River, opened on demand by tall boats... you can now get a text or email alert to avoid sitting in your car waiting for the closing, always an oh-no moment. And it’s a $4.00 toll to go from one little town to the next.
CSX 2625 and 5353 intercept traffic on Tarragona Street as they hook up to a pair of boxcars spotted on the spur to W.R. Taylor Company. Since W.R. Taylor only has one unloading spot, the crew will pull both cars from the siding, re-spot the load and take the empty car back to Goulding yard. This unique switching operation takers place as needed but sometimes as often as twice a week, depending on demand, but almost always at night. This day the crew wanted to stay ahead of an approaching storm and had no cars to switch around at the port, and thus they managed to get to W.R. Taylor just as dusk started to set in. While this type of scene might have been commonplace 50 years ago, nowadays this operation is one of only a handful of instances left in the entire country where a carload customer is switched out from street running trackage.

Very difficult shooting conditions in this cathedral, little light.
The organ of the Saint-Bertrand de Comminges cathedral has one of the most beautiful Renaissance cases preserved to date and classified as a Historic Monument since 1840. Commissioned by Jean de Mauléon, bishop of Comminges, it was made after the completion of the stalls of the choir in 1551.
Like the stalls, this buffet would be the work of Nicolas Bachelier, French architect and sculptor (1487 – 1556) to whom we owe, among other things, the famous Hôtel d’Assézat in Toulouse.
The name of the maker and the original composition of the instrument are unknown to us. It will undergo many avatars over the centuries and, in 1793, the watch stems will be melted down and the instrument abandoned.
Of the Renaissance instrument enclosed in this case, nothing remains. To imagine what the instrument ordered by Jean de Mauléon, bishop of Comminges, could consist of, one is reduced to formulating hypotheses, by referring on the one hand to the known composition of organs of this period, to the structure of the buffet, and on the other hand, to keyboard literature published around the 1550s. in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Bernard Raupp, organ builder in Mirande, found drawings on the valves of the windchests of the great organ, which can be attributed to Jean-François Lépine. The rest is the result of successive reconstructions carried out over the following centuries.
In 1896, the Magen brothers rebuilt the organ and delivered an instrument with 2 keyboards and pedal.
In 1970, Robert Chauvin restored the windchests of the Grand Orgue, then under the direction of Pierre Lacroix, the reconstruction of the current instrument was entrusted to Jean-Pierre Swiderski and carried out in several stages, from 1975 to 1981. With the exception of 218 pipes from the 17th century and 243 pipes from Magen, the pipework is completely new. Produced on demand, it was harmonized by Jean-Pierre Swiderski for the back stops and Georges Lhôte for the reed stops. The instrument still retains two 14-stop windchests in the Grand Orgue and two 4-stop pedal windchests dating back to the 17th century.
Since 1974, the municipality of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, owner, has delegated its powers to the Association of Friends of the Organ of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, with a view to the restoration and maintenance of the tool.

My point of view from within Studio Bell. I had great advantage of this massive window, giving me all natural light which created lovely silhouettes and reflections.
Mack celebrates his 15th birthday today. He's spending the day outside. I think our neighbors almost consider him "homeless" because he's always outside but that is by choice. I used to wonder if Mack would have preferred being re-released after the animal control officer brought him, Jimmy and their mom into our practice. But then I remember just how much Mack loves a certain puffy comforter my mom gave us, his heated mat in winter, being inside when it rains, having doormen/doorwomen opening doors for him, serving him food on demand, freshening his water multiple times a day... He loves being outside when the weather is nice but he also likes the finer things in life.

Magic moment before sunrise in Costa Brava Catalonia. This was one of the very rare mornings where the sky turned red not only in the direction of the sun and where the air was clear even though there was no wind. It might have been nice if the moon had been closer to the castle on the background hill, but I thought including it added to the fairy tale look of the scene. The Darckr Flickr Viewer is a webapp and a mashup based upon the flickr web rest apis.
Darckr allows to view Flickr content and helps in social life and picture management, by posting comments, or editing photo parameters.
For me, Darckr is an experimental platform to study the web2 languages.
Working is easier in beautiful surroundings...
Darckr uses ajax for continuous page preloading and streaming (here my own pictures sorted by interestingness according to Flickr), and the mootools javascript api.
The originality of Darckr is that the end user can freely customize his preferred viewing settings and save them on demand in cookies.
Ironically, this free software has become the mostly used of my programs ever, with more than 3000 thousand users of the full functionality,
several thousand pages viewed per day, and some 70000 api calls per day.
Still rising :-).
Darckr uses Ajax to interact with one's flickr account in ways not offered by the flickr web site itself.

Mighty Lion - Astro Cruise

In the vast expanse of space and time,
A mighty lion appeared, his voice sublime.
He longed to find a new place to dwell,
Somewhere in the universe, where he could excel.
He roamed the galaxies, without a care,
A king of beasts, with his golden hair.
His roar echoed through the cosmos wide,
A search for a new life, a place to reside.
He traveled far and wide, through starry skies,
A blaze of fur, with fierce amber eyes.
He searched for a world, both strong and free,
Where he could reign, with boundless glee.
He roared to the heavens, with all his might,
A plea for a world, that felt just right.
Then one day, he found a world so rare,
A place that answered, to his every prayer.

"Unique attraction, opened somewhere in the 1800s. A small Gothic House was erected for a fisherman to live next to the pond, to stock it, guard it, keep the fish healthy and be ready to bring fish, mainly cod, to the cook at the Laird's House on demand. The house, with one bedroom and a Gothic tower entrance direct to the pond, was build using stone, blasted from the basin of the pond."

Chaque vague en passant d'un butin s'est chargée ;
Mêle encor quelque temps vos noms d'ombre couverts

Device enables direct communication among multiple quantum processors
MIT researchers developed a photon-shuttling “interconnect” that can facilitate remote entanglement, a key step toward a practical quantum computer.

Quantum computers have the potential to solve complex problems that would be impossible for the most powerful classical supercomputer to crack.
Just like a classical computer has separate, yet interconnected, components that must work together, such as a memory chip and a CPU on a motherboard, a quantum computer will need to communicate quantum information between multiple processors.
Current architectures used to interconnect superconducting quantum processors are “point-to-point” in connectivity, meaning they require a series of transfers between network nodes, with compounding error rates.
On the way to overcoming these challenges, MIT researchers developed a new interconnect device that can support scalable, “all-to-all” communication, such that all superconducting quantum processors in a network can communication directly with each other.
They created a network of two quantum processors and used their interconnect to send microwave photons back and forth on demand in a user-defined direction. Photons are particles of light that can carry quantum information.
The device includes a superconducting wire, or waveguide, that shuttles photons between processors and can be routed as far as needed. The researchers can couple any number of modules to it, efficiently transmitting information between a scalable network of processors.
They used this interconnect to demonstrate remote entanglement, a type of correlation between quantum processors that are not physically connected. Remote entanglement is a key step toward developing a powerful, distributed network of many quantum processors.
“In the future, a quantum computer will probably need both local and nonlocal interconnects. Local interconnects are natural in arrays of superconducting qubits. Ours allows for more nonlocal connections. We can send photons at different frequencies, times, and in two propagation directions, which gives our network more flexibility and throughput,” says Aziza Almanakly, an electrical engineering and computer science graduate student in the Engineering Quantum Systems group of the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) and lead author of a paper on the interconnect.
Her co-authors include Beatriz Yankelevich, a graduate student in the EQuS Group; senior author William D. Oliver, the Henry Ellis Warren (1894) Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and professor of Physics, director of the Center for Quantum Engineering, and associate director of RLE; and others at MIT and Lincoln Laboratory. The research appears today in Nature Physics.
A scalable architecture
The researchers previously developed a quantum computing module, which enabled them to send information-carrying microwave photons in either direction along a waveguide.
In the new work, they took that architecture a step further by connecting two modules to a waveguide in order to emit photons in a desired direction and then absorb them at the other end.
Each module is composed of four qubits, which serve as an interface between the waveguide carrying the photons and the larger quantum processors.
The qubits coupled to the waveguide emit and absorb photons, which are then transferred to nearby data qubits.
The researchers use a series of microwave pulses to add energy to a qubit, which then emits a photon. Carefully controlling the phase of those pulses enables a quantum interference effect that allows them to emit the photon in either direction along the waveguide. Reversing the pulses in time enables a qubit in another module any arbitrary distance away to absorb the photon.
“Pitching and catching photons enables us to create a ‘quantum interconnect’ between nonlocal quantum processors, and with quantum interconnects comes remote entanglement,” explains Oliver.
“Generating remote entanglement is a crucial step toward building a large-scale quantum processor from smaller-scale modules. Even after that photon is gone, we have a correlation between two distant, or ‘nonlocal,’ qubits. Remote entanglement allows us to take advantage of these correlations and perform parallel operations between two qubits, even though they are no longer connected and may be far apart,” Yankelevich explains.
However, transferring a photon between two modules is not enough to generate remote entanglement. The researchers need to prepare the qubits and the photon so the modules “share” the photon at the end of the protocol.
Generating entanglement
The team did this by halting the photon emission pulses halfway through their duration. In quantum mechanical terms, the photon is both retained and emitted. Classically, one can think that half-a-photon is retained and half is emitted.
Once the receiver module absorbs that “half-photon,” the two modules become entangled.
But as the photon travels, joints, wire bonds, and connections in the waveguide distort the photon and limit the absorption efficiency of the receiving module.
To generate remote entanglement with high enough fidelity, or accuracy, the researchers needed to maximize how often the photon is absorbed at the other end.
“The challenge in this work was shaping the photon appropriately so we could maximize the absorption efficiency,” Almanakly says.
They used a reinforcement learning algorithm to “predistort” the photon. The algorithm optimized the protocol pulses in order to shape the photon for maximal absorption efficiency.
When they implemented this optimized absorption protocol, they were able to show photon absorption efficiency greater than 60 percent.
This absorption efficiency is high enough to prove that the resulting state at the end of the protocol is entangled, a major milestone in this demonstration.
“We can use this architecture to create a network with all-to-all connectivity. This means we can have multiple modules, all along the same bus, and we can create remote entanglement among any pair of our choosing,” Yankelevich says.
In the future, they could improve the absorption efficiency by optimizing the path over which the photons propagate, perhaps by integrating modules in 3D instead of having a superconducting wire connecting separate microwave packages. They could also make the protocol faster so there are fewer chances for errors to accumulate.
“In principle, our remote entanglement generation protocol can also be expanded to other kinds of quantum computers and bigger quantum internet systems,” Almanakly says.
