With an on-time departure out of Chicago Union Station one hundred and twenty seven miles ago, The Milwaukee Road's Tacoma bound Olympian Hiawatha number 15, was captured by an unknown photographer approaching Watertown on their LaCrosse Division. First class travelers are enjoying the view from one of the Pullman built Creek series sleeper observations, as they are swept up in the romance of rail travel. In 2,100 miles, the Olympian will arrive in Tacoma, Washington after traversing through the forests of the midwest, the great plains, and mountains of the west.

Just take a look at me
Olympian in ivory
Despair at will at what you see
I'm oh so terrible
Just take a look at me
Whilst I revel in your jealousy
Despair at will at what you see
I'm still Olympian
Within my ivory.....
Can you ever picture my agonies?

Preserved Leyland Olympians J778CEV and G281UMJ are seen at the Bucks Railway Centre in Quainton at their annual bus rally.
J778CEV had come from Z&S Transport, but is originally from Dublin. G281UMJ, numbered 5111, is ex Arriva and operated for many years from the now closed Garston Garage. This was its first event having been painted and vinyled in the old Arriva livery.
Hong Kong Olympians of this pedigree are now very rare. i think only 4 survive in active roles, with a few others languishing beached waiting their fate. TIL6570 of course survived from the MASS Sheffield clear out and now finds use with a dance troupe in the North West. Not easy to photograph but finally cornered in West Yorkshire of all places !
Volvo Olympian/Northern Counties Palatine cascaded from London and used by Stagecoach Devon on route 12 prior to arrival of Trident/ALX400s new in 2004.
Twenty one years ago, UP 3339 was repainted green and renumbered the UP 1996 to commemorate the Summer Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia. Three months after the games, it received both a fresh coat of Armour Yellow paint and a new road number. UP 3101 leads four SD40-2s on a Chicago to Los Angeles stack train emerging from North Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah the morning of Nov. 10, 1996.
Weardale has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with the Leyland Olympian in standard and long-wheelbase form plus, of course, its well-known former Hong Kong tri-axle decker. This fictional ECW-bodied Leyland Olympian coach represents an earlier era when, in reality, the company acquired a former Southend Van Hool tri-axle double-deck coach. During its relatively short stay with the company, it was a regular performer on the X21 Stanhope-Newcastle service (05-Nov-10).

Yes, there are more gods in the Greek Pantheon, but these seem to be the major twelve.
I subconsciously ripped off the trident design from here.
Today marks 60 years since the last runs of Milwaukee Road's Olympian Hiawatha. This train was an interesting and unique part of rail transportation between Chicago and Seattle/Tacoma.

Yourbus Volvo Olympian / Northern Counties 2001 - P611 CAY is pictured in Nottingham City Centre during the first few months of the company's existence back in 2009 working the 81 to Hempshill Lane. It had moved here from Derby after it was disposed of by Arriva Midlands. This route was mainly operated by Dennis Dart SLFs which could explain the rather unhelpful blind.
These two Olympians are ex ?? both with Summercourt Travel near Newquay one is East Lancs possibly ex Bullock the other is Northern Counties ex ???

The livery and vehicle depicted here are from different eras, so this is best described as a retro livery. The central staircase indicates that this Northern Counties-bodied Leyland Olympian began life in London service. Several examples saw out their final days with Go North East, mostly painted overall yellow, which would have been a good canvas for this ‘retro’ PTE-era livery. National Bus Company subsidiaries Northern General Transport and United Automobile Services both adopted full Tyne & Wear PTE livery (but with NBC logos) for services running wholly within the PTE area. Northern General subsequently became Go Ahead Northern and then Go North East (22-Jun-21).

My late friend John Shaw took this image of the Olympian Hiawatha at Auburn, Washington many years ago. This is the westbound train, which only stopped at Auburn to discharge passengers. Between Seattle and Tacoma, the train was hauled backward. If the Hiawatha was on time, it was around 10:15 am.

Well I suppose the time had to come for the final Volvo Olympian in the Stagecoach East Kent fleet to bow out and in the end it was a rather low key event! Still it managed to survive almost two months longer than the others so not a bad extended farewell!
Pictured here on the final scheduled working of an Olympian, Stagecoach East Kent 16026 P826 GMU is seen on Bossingham Road, Stelling Minnis working the final route 18A of the 2015/2016 academic year. Friday 22nd July 2016.

No 01765 of uses for Olympians is the paint ball shed ! Often used as props within the sites for participants to "fire" from or hide in. This is F712SDL one of a good few Olympians which are in a similar use country wide. Although not an ideal end, anything which puts a vehicle to good use when otherwise it would be scrapped is a positive in my opinion.
