Spokanne oldest Ballroom

The design of this venue was inspired by the Doge's Palace in Venice, built in the elaborate Venetian Gothic style. When it was completed in 1908, the Hall of the Doges was called the most opulent ballroom north of San Francisco. During the 2002 restoration, the Hall of The Doges was lifted intact by crane to become the only "flying ballroom" in the world. When the new building was erected, the ballroom was carefully placed back into the new structure as the foyer to the Grand Pennington Ballroom.

The Old Town in Warsaw is the oldest urban center of Warsaw, a compact complex of historic architecture, mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a medieval layout of buildings, surrounded by a ring of defensive walls from the 14th-16th centuries.

The city was founded in the 13th century, and soon after the foundation of the city, the parish church of St. Jana (today's cathedral).

In 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising, the buildings of the Old Town were destroyed by German occupying forces in around 90%. Survived six houses with over 260.

Immediately after the end of the war, the town began to be detached and reconstructed.

The reconstruction of the cathedral was completed in 1955, restoring its appearance from the 15th century.

In 1971, the decision to rebuild the Royal Castle was made again, and in 1974 the building was in a state of being raw. From 1981, further interiors were opened to visitors.

On September 2, 1980, the Old Town in Warsaw was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the entry was as follows;

"Over 85% of the historic center of Warsaw was destroyed by the Nazi German occupation squads. After the war, the inhabitants of Warsaw undertook a reconstruction work that led to the reconstruction of churches, palaces and houses that are a symbol of Polish culture and national identity".

Stare Miasto w Warszawie jest najstarszym ośrodkiem miejskim Warszawy będący zwartym zespołem architektury zabytkowej, przeważnie z XVII i XVIII wieku o średniowiecznym układzie zabudowy, otoczone pierścieniem murów obronnych z XIV–XVI wieku.

Miasto zostało założone w XIII wieku, a wkrótce po założeniu miasta wzniesiono kościół parafialny św. Jana (dzisiejsza katedra).

W 1944 podczas powstania warszawskiego zabudowania Starego Miasta zostały zniszczone przez niemieckie wojska okupacyjne w około 90%. Przetrwało sześć domów z ponad 260.

Zaraz po zakończeniu wojny przystąpiono do odgruzowywania i odbudowy miasta.

Odbudowę katedry zakończono w roku 1955, przywracając jej wygląd z XV wieku.

W 1971 podjęto ponownie decyzję o odbudowie Zamku Królewskiego a w 1974 budowla była w stanie surowym. Od 1981 udostępniano zwiedzającym kolejne wnętrza.

2 września 1980 roku Stare Miasto w Warszawie zostało umieszczone na liście światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO, a wpis był następujący;

"Ponad 85% zabytkowego centrum Warszawy zostało zniszczone przez nazistowskie niemieckie oddziały okupacyjne. Po wojnie mieszkańcy Warszawy podjęli dzieło odbudowy, które doprowadziło do odtworzenia kościołów, pałaców i domów będących symbolem polskiej kultury i narodowej tożsamości. Jest to wyjątkowy przykład całkowitej rekonstrukcji zespołu historycznego."

The Itatiaia Park is the oldest national park of Brazil, created on June 14, 1937 by the then President Getulio Vargas.

Located at the Mantiqueira Mountain Range, the Itatiaia National Park includes part of the municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende in Rio de Janeiro state, and Bocaina de Minas and Itamonte in Minas Gerais state. It is near the President Dutra highway, half way from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo cities and next to the economic center of Resende.

The park relief is mountainous and characterized by rocky formations, with altitude between 540-2791 m, and at its highest point is the peak of the Black Needles (Agulhas Negras).

In Itatiaia Plateau region, also known as "Upper Part", are the high fields and hanging valleys where there are several river sources. In the Park area are the origins of 12 major regional river basins, which supply two main basins: Rio Grande (Grand River), an affluent of the Paraná River, and the Paraíba do Sul River, the most important of Rio de Janeiro.

The "Lower Part" has an exuberant Atlantic Forest vegetation and generous water courses, with several natural pools and waterfalls where swimming is permitted.

Some of the oldest buildings in Austin can be found in the Sixth Street Historic District, a.k.a. Old Sixth Street and Dirty 6th, that runs east from Lavaca St. (2 blocks west of Congress Ave.) to I-35. While the Sixth St. entertainment district extends well past Congress Ave. to the west, and I-35 to the east, it is the historic section known for its clubs, bars, live music, restaurants, and 19th century architecture that made Austin the "Live Music Capital of the World."

This beautiful circa 1875 building, now home of the Friends Bar, one of Sixth Streets live music venues, is located at 208 E. 6th St. The Sixth Street Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

What a great opportunity to see this well known couple first thing on our visit to Seney Wildlife Refuge. They've apparently been together since 1997, making the annual 3,000 mile migratory trip returning to Seney each year. Here's a great article on the couple:

The Alfama is the oldest neighborhood of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river. Its name comes from the Arabic al-ḥamma, meaning "hot fountains" or "baths," akin to "hammam". The district includes the freguesias (parishes) of São Miguel, Santo Estêvão, São Vicente de Fora and part of the two streets, "Freguesia da Sé: Rua do Barão" and "Rua São João da Praça". It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.

The Rua do Barão is one of the streets of the Freguesia da Sé, which begins at the Rua São João da Praça (where once stood the Door of the Alfama) and ends at Rua Augusto Rosa (at the Cathedral's walls). The toponym "Rua do Barão" is because João Fernandes da Silveira, the first Baron of Alvito, minister of Portuguese kings Dom Afonso V and Dom João II, lived here.

During the times of Moorish rule, Alfama constituted the whole of the city, which later spread to the West (Baixa neighbourhood). Alfama became inhabited by the fishermen and the poor, and its condition as the neighbourhood of the poor continues to this day.

The 1755 Lisbon earthquake did not destroy the Alfama, which has remained a labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares. Lately the neighbourhood has been restored with the renovation of the old houses and new restaurants where Fado Portuguese typical is sometimes played.

Overlooking the Alfama is the medieval Castle of São Jorge, royal residence until the early 16th century with views of the city. In the slopes of Alfama there are other terraces (miradouros) from which to see the city, like the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, near the church of the same name and over remnants of the Moorish city walls, and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol (Gates of the Sun). Near Miradouro of Santa Luzia is located the Museum of Decorative Arts (Museu de Artes Decorativas), a 17th-century mansion.

From 2012, Alfama is part of the freguesia of Santa Maria Maior.

Among the churches of the Alfama are Lisbon Cathedral (12th–14th centuries), the oldest of the city and located to the West of the neighbourhood, the Convent of the Grace (Convento da Graça, 18th century), near the Castle, the mannerist Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (late 16th–18th century), where the Kings of the House of Braganza are buried, and the baroque Church of Santa Engrácia (17th century), now converted into a National Pantheon for important Portuguese personalities.

The oldest mention of Huva Ten Berghe dates from 1483. In 1700 it was bought by baron Willem Jan van Dedem, who had a new house built in its place together with his wife Gerbregt van Delen. This was completed in 1705. The house was restored in 1985. The house takes its name from a river dune nearby.

The unique church of St. Nicholas in Horodysh was the oldest church building in Menshchyna. In 2016, the church was moved to the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Pirogov.

St. Nicholas Church was built in Horodysh in 1763, it consisted of a four-sided nave, an eight-sided hall and a six-sided altar. By the way, the structure was built without a single nail.

In 2016, the church was dismantled and moved to Pirogov. Only the foundation remained in Horodysh.

In the restored church, the walls are the same as in Horodyshche, and the outside is decorated with modern materials.

The 1919 Bentley EXP-2, the actual second Bentley that WO produced. And....drum roll.......it won 11 races outright, and went 2nd 7 times!.

Fresh out of the Royal Air Force a century ago in 1919, W.O. Bentley built three EXP cars to start off his car venture. Using his experience with aircraft engines, he developed a 3.0-liter four-cylinder with aluminum pistons for his cars.

After Autocar tested EXP1, Bentley used his exhibited chassis to build EXP2 into a two-seater sports car, featuring an aluminum body, and an engine with four valves per cylinder, a twin-spark head, twin magnetos, and a few bits of magnesium here and there. As a result, EXP2 made 175 horsepower in its ultimate iteration. Since it weighed just 1500 lbs, it was good for a top speed of 79 miles per hour. In 1921, that was still plenty enough for a victory, as long as a car could stay in one piece throughout the race. Fortunately, Bentley's chassis were the most robust in the business, a hallmark of his, and a factor in his 5 LeMans 24 hour long distance wins, which favor the well engineered and strongly built chassis.

W5856 is the oldest surviving airworthy Fairey Swordfish in the world. She first flew on Trafalgar Day (21 October) 1941 and was a “Blackfish”, built by Blackburn Aircraft at Sherburn-in-Elmet and delivered to 82 MU (Lichfield) on 20 October 1941 for overseas transport to Gibraltar. W5856 served with the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet for a year. Little is known of her role while on active Service in the Mediterranean but it is likely W5856 was based at North Front, Gibraltar, carrying out patrols over the Straits. She was then returned to Fairey’s Stockport factory for refurbishment during winter 1942/43.

This is the oldest, uninhabited part of Beverston Castle. In fact, I had to take this photo through the bars of an iron gate, so I couldn't get any closer to avoid the dark shadows ...

On Wikipedia, there is some information on Beverston Castle to be found, accompanied by a photo that is almost identical to mine! This is an extract:

"Beverston Castle, also known as Beverstone Castle or Tetbury Castle, was constructed as a medieval stone fortress in the village of Beverston, Gloucestershire, England. The property is a mix of manor house, various small buildings, extensive gardens and the medieval ruins of the fortified building. The castle was founded in 1229 by Maurice de Gaunt, and it saw action in the Civil War.

Much of the castle remained in a state of ruin according to a 2019 report, and had been uninhabitable since the 17th century. Several buildings on the 693-acre property, including five cottages and the 17th century house with seven bedrooms, were in use as residences, however."

Architecture ...Italy Vilia

The original owners of Italianate homes would often have been third or fourth generation Canadians, probably descended from United Empire Loyalists. The Loyalists were refugees. They left the newly formed United States because they disagreed with fundamental policies of the new republic, one of them being slavery. Many of the Loyalists left beautiful properties, large homes and good lives with only the belongings they could fit on their backs or in a wagon. They would have been pleased to see their descendants living in comfort. In addition, they would have been happy to see that their descendants had maintained the same moral principles that forced their own migration.70

Ontario (Algonquin Park) - 20191005-02

Established in 1893, it is the oldest provincial park in Canada. Additions since its creation have increased the park to its current size of about 7,653 km2 (2,955 sq mi).

Its size, combined with its proximity to the major urban centres of Toronto and Ottawa, makes Algonquin one of the most popular provincial parks in the province and the country. Highway 60 runs through the south end of the park, while the Trans-Canada Highway bypasses it to the north. Over 2,400 lakes and 1,200 kilometres of streams and rivers are located within the park. Some notable examples include Canoe Lake and the Petawawa, Nipissing, Amable du Fond, Madawaska, and Tim rivers. These were formed by the retreat of the glaciers during the last ice age.

The park is considered part of the "border" between Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. The park is in an area of transition between northern coniferous forest and southern deciduous forest. This unique mixture of forest types, and the wide variety of environments in the park, allows the park to support an uncommon diversity of plant and animal species. It is also an important site for wildlife research. (Wikipedia)

We made the trek to Algonquin Park for fall colours a couple of years ago. It seemed that half of the population of Toronto and Ottawa was also there, with hundreds of cars and people filling the parking areas and roadsides as we all tried for the best views of the fall colours. I love this park, but not when it is so full of people. I'll look for less obstructed views of leaves in the future.

Greensted Church in Essex, England is often claimed to be the world's oldest wooden church, though only some of its original structure remains. The oak walls are believed to date back to the mid-9th or mid-11th century, and may be remnants of a palisade church or early stave church.

Greensted Church is a Grade I listed building and is still in use, holding weekly services. It's located in the village of Greensted, about a mile west of Chipping Ongar town center. The church's full title is The Church of St Andrew, Greensted-juxta-Ongar, but it's more commonly known as Greensted Church.

Yellowstone National Park

Wyoming

USA

Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest, oldest, and most dynamic of Yellowstone's thermal areas. The highest temperature yet recorded in any geothermal area in Yellowstone was measured in a scientific drill hole at Norris: 459°F (237°C) just 1,087 feet (326 meters) below the surface! There are very few thermal features at Norris under the boiling point (199°F at this elevation).

Norris shows evidence of having had thermal features for at least 115,000 years. The features in the basin change daily, with frequent disturbances from seismic activity and water fluctuations. The vast majority of the waters at Norris are acidic, including acid geysers which are very rare. Steamboat Geyser, the tallest geyser in the world at 300–400 feet (91–122 m) and Echinus Geyser (pH 3.5 or so) are the most popular features.

The basin consists of two areas: Porcelain Basin and the Back Basin. Porcelain Basin is barren of trees and provides a sensory experience in sound, color, and smell; a 3/4-mile (1.2-km) bare ground and boardwalk trail accesses this area. Back Basin is more heavily wooded with features scattered throughout the area. A 1.5-mile (2.4-km) trail of boardwalks and bare ground encircles this part of the basin.
