FDNY Rescue 1 is perhaps the most well-known rescue company in the Western Hemisphere, and for good reason! Rescue 1 responds to any fathomable scenario in the largest city in the United States and has seen some of the most notable incidents in the fire service. The phrase “Outstanding” is a quote that describes the members of Rescue 1 and was coined by the late Captain Terry Hatton who, along with 10 other members of Rescue 1 and 332 other firefighters, made the ultimate sacrifice on that September morning.

Builder’s note: I’m first going to preface this by saying that I never thought I would build a Ferrara 😛 This 2019 Ferrara walk-in rescue version of FDNY Rescue 1 is a special MOC for me as I have always wanted to build a replica of the real thing! Going into the build, I knew that I needed to increase the scale a little bit to accommodate the functional compartments and the walk-in section, hence the 7 wide scale. I also decided to use the actual red doors (#ripwallet), and the seven 1x3x4 doors alone cost more than the rest of the pieces combined 😅 I also knew that some sacrifices would have to be made, like the ginormous rear lights (I didn’t want to actually cut a few pieces to make it work, sorry Sven lol 😅), and the front “R1” decal on the bumper. But having said that, I tried to fit all the other decals and functionality as needed! Special thanks to my broski D2 for the major assist on the decals! As this was built several months ago, many ideas have directly stemmed from this build, some of which I have already posted (CBFD Squad 5), and others which are yet to come (hint: SFR and CBFD, the latter of which was not totally planned until late December, but yolo I guess lol).

Also, in case you didn’t know, I’m a huge fan of the E-ONE/Saulsbury rescues that FDNY ran, and in my own humble opinion, FDNY should’ve gone with E-ONE for their rescues, although I’m not mad that the next batch will be Seagraves. This rescue is what I envision if FDNY stuck with E-ONE instead of going to Ferrara.

Castle Beach Fire Department is proud to announce the delivery of the brand new Rescue 1, which replaces the 2021 Seagrave/SVI which will receive a refurbishment from SVI before it is assigned as a reserve rescue for the department. Rescue 1 is the primary heavy rescue for the Central and North Bureaus and is assigned to all confirmed structure fires, technical rescues, and other incidents where the IC deems their services needed. Because of the many disciplines that the rescue company is trained in, the rescue apparatus committee went with a different design that focused not only on carrying the appropriate tools, but also being able to access the gear quickly and efficiently. The walk-in space is setup for three firefighters and the various suits they need for any situation including fire, rescue, hazmat, dive, high angle, confined space. Charging ports are found throughout the walk-in space for all the special meters. The walk-in portion does not extend to the whole body as the front two compartments were reserved for long tools and equipment, much like recent Squad 5. Rescue 1 is staffed by 6: Captain II, Apparatus Operator (who drives the rescue platform), top member, inside member, outside member, and irons.

Early this morning, CBFD encountered heavy fire at a vacant/boarded 1 story structure converted into living areas. The size of the building and unknown layout/contents prompted the use of the Thermite RS3 robot to aid extinguishment of the fire. Sixty-two firefighters took approximately 45 minutes to put out the well involved building. No injuries reported. Fire cause is under investigation.

Builder’s note: Comparing this rig with the 2020 version shows many changes, notably with the rear design. Whereas the previous design had inherent flaws connecting the hosebed to the body, this version utilized SNOT techniques to stabilize that particular area. In addition, I was able to shorten the body by 1.3 studs, allowing for a better scaled apparatus.

Truck 10 has received updated graphics before returning to service at Station 10 - CBX. As one can immediately tell, this rig is different than the other frontline truck companies at Castle Beach Fire Department. The most obvious difference is the color scheme. While the other truck companies are red with a white stripe, Truck 10 is lime green with a reflective blue stripe to aid in visualization as it is the first due truck company at CBX. Another huge difference is the fact that this is a quint. As the airport has many terminals and cargo areas, the potential for fire to spread to a large amount of space in a short time is a possible scenario that may occur. Hence, all the frontline suppression apparatus are equipped with a pump and tank to assist with fire alarms. Also, Truck 10 will be the second truck company (after Truck 5) to be fully staffed and will be a separate company from Engine 210. Seeing that I forgot to post this here, I am now updating Rescue 1 to its current iteration. Rescue 1 has received their latest rig, a 2021 Seagrave Marauder II/SVI heavy rescue! This rig replaces the 2017 Spartan Gladiator. Like the previous generation of rescues, this apparatus has a partial walk-in compartment that stores the wet/dry suits, ALS equipment, and forcible entry tools. Also, a custom slide out increases interior space for command purposes. Unlike the prior rigs, the side door to the walk-in compartment was eliminated as the crew primarily enters through the cab. This allowed design engineers to add storage solutions for high frequency tools. Another new change for the rig was to move the air compressor to the top of the rig to free up space in the compartments.

Rescue 1 is staffed by 6 men and responds to calls in the northern half of the city, while Rescue 2 handles the southern half. Rescue 1 also cross-staffs Rescue Platform 1. The compartments hold a wide variety of tools for various rescue applications including confined space rescue, high angle rescue, trench rescue, vehicle extrication, underwater/swift water rescue, and hazmat.

Castle Beach Fire Department has updated Engine 17 to this 2019 Seagrave Marauder II triple combination which formerly served as Engine 1. Engine 17’s previous rig, a 2005 Seagrave Commander triple, will then be moved to the training academy. Engine 17 also showcases the updated “1” series spec. The biggest change to the design is the removal of the medical compartment from just behind the cab to now having a full compartment on the officer’s side dedicated to advanced life support gear. With the rise of different kinds of medical emergencies, CBFD is taking measures to stay prepared for any emergency! Engine 17 serves the Pacific Heights region and sees roughly 9 calls a day.

The brand new Rescue Platforms have arrived! Rescue Platforms play a vital role in the department as they are the only aerial devices with a platform or bucket. These apparatus are useful in situations requiring an elevated platform for rescue operations or master stream operations. Since both rescue platforms are not responding as first-due truck companies, they do not carry the standard complement of truck company tools; rather, they carry specialized equipment, such as collapse, high angle, or low angle rescue equipment. The department selected the 95' Aerialscope after having a trial run with a Rosenbauer T-Rex assigned to RP1 and an Aerialscope assigned to RP2 for two years. Despite the articulating jib, the Rosenbauer was not selected for department use as it required additional time to setup. Ultimately, the Aerialscope was selected due to its unmatched stability. The boom can extend 9 degrees below grade to 75 degrees above grade. It is also capable of a 1000 lb tip load while flowing 1000 gpm, unrestricted. When retracted, the boom can lift up to 5000 lbs.

Reserve Engine 503 is one of several reserve engines that Castle Beach operates. RE503 is a 2007 Pierce Arrow XT and marked the switch to a new engine layout featuring all roll up compartments and the removal of the ground ladders on the curb side. The department experimented with having a ground ladder rack, but engines purchased after 2009 ultimately had internal ladder compartments as motorized ladder racks required space to deploy and additional time to retrieve the ladders. Reserve Engine 503 is housed at Station 2 alongside Reserve Engine 504 and Reserve Truck 502.

Castle Beach Fire Department has updated Truck 5, which was the first of five rigs to be purchased in 2019 courtesy of the LEMA grant! Truck 5 is special in the fleet as it is one of two truck companies not tethered to the 2-car (with the other being Truck 10). The latest version of Truck 5 features new innovations and techniques resulting in a much more stable rig! Although Truck 5 comes in at 61 ft in length, the apparatus can maneuver much easier than a rear-mount or mid-mount aerial thanks to the steering 5th wheel. As the second busiest truck company in the city, Truck 5 sees action in mostly in downtown Castle Beach.

Castle Beach Fire Department has accepted delivery of the brand new Engine 3, which is the first Avenger in the fleet. Of significant note is the return of the urban attack spec for “1” series engines. However, special ops stations will continue to have the larger bodies for specialty equipment. This move allows “1” series engines to be passed down to the “200” seamlessly. Engine 3 is housed alongside Light Force 3 and serves the University district and averages 13 calls a day.

The brand new Fast Response vehicles have now been placed in service! To assist with the ever growing number of EMS calls, Castle Beach Fire Department has placed these two fast response vehicles at Stations 1 and 2. These apparatus are not only equipped for EMS, but also for fire and rescue since the FRs have forcible entry tools, high rise packs, and a combi tool. The two FF/Paramedics that staff each unit can be utilized as needed during an incident. These nimble units were also designed to support technical rescue operations with use of the crane. Although not as large as the one found on the heavy rescue, these smaller cranes can assist in hillside rescues where the larger rotator cannot access.

Reserve Engine 504 is part of the first batch of engines that received full height roll up compartments on both sides of the rig. Originally the last of four engines delivered in 2006, RE504 saw action at Station 3 and 6 before being transitioned to a reserve role in 2014. Two of the four engines were donated to a department in Mexico, while the other also became a reserve engine. Unfortunately, that engine was totaled when it was a drunk driver hit the fire truck as it blocked a scene on the Interstate. RE504 is housed at Station 2 along with RE503 and RT502

Truck 6 is back in service! After the 2017 Pierce Arrow XT was returned due to recalls, Castle Beach Fire Department opted to bring back one of the reserve tillers to frontline duty once it returned from a brief refurbishment. Despite its age, the Spartan tiller remains a crew favorite due to its ease of use. Originally ordered during a trial phase, the design of this tiller would play a major role in the setting the Castle Beach tiller spec. The twin of this rig would also serve as a test truck, but was moved to ready reserve status almost immediately. Truck 6 will now operate this 1995 Spartan/LTI tiller for the foreseeable future until the next batch of tillers is ordered.

With the construction of a new mall along with multiple apartment complexes and shopping centers in 37’s district, the apparatus committee wanted a rig that could attack a fire rapidly prior to the arrival of other companies. While other vehicles such as a single-axle quint were considered, the tractor drawn quint provided the most space for equipment, all while maintaining the high maneuverability offered by a TDA. Reserve Truck 502 serves as the second reserve truck in the city and is quite unique as it is the first quint the department ever purchased. During the trial phase in 1995, this apparatus took the place of both the truck company and the wagon (light force engine) at several high volume stations. However, this concept did not prove to be efficient, and the tiller quint was placed out of service one month into the trial. This truck was then placed in the reserve truck pool for a couple years, then moved back to frontline status when Truck 3’s Pierce Dash TDA was involved in an accident in 2004 and remained in that role until 2007. It had since been a reserve truck ever since.
