Walking in the Kaiserstuhl in the Black Forest

The Kaiserstuhl offers inviting wine terraces, themed paths, bike paths and a quality hiking trail around the Kaiserstuhl.

There are many opportunities to take a walk in the region,

including 16 Nature Reserves.

This well-liked path in the image offers a beautiful and familiar view in a westward direction: From the hills and terraced vineyards to the Upper Rhine valley and the Vosges mountains in the nearby Alsace, France.

The lockdown in my region allowed it to take sports like bicycle touring and walking outside.

Many thanks for your kind visit, your faves and awards, dear friends.

Take care everyone.

Our view is of the idyllic islands of Tarutao National Park, Thailand, on an atmospheric early morning. The Thai National Marine Park comprises 51 outstanding forested islands and coral reefs. It was established in 1974.

Prior to that it was the home for centuries of the Chao Lay or Sea Gypsies (aka People of the Sea). Otherwise, Thailand's nomadic seafaring tribes, who used to roam freely across the Andaman Sea without ties to any country or nationality.

The southernmost end of the park lies on the border with Malaysia, just north of Langkawi's island coastline where this photo was shot from Datai Bay. It offers yet another beautiful nature place to visit in this part of the world.

Blue-gray gnatcatchers are, without a doubt, one of the most special and entertaining birds the US has to offer. With a pretty sky-blue back contrasting with a paler shade of blue, along with white and black, they boast what I think is one of the more underrated color combinations when it comes to Neotropical migrants, and I’m sure they know it because they sure like to flip those tails around (kidding, that’s a foraging technique). That isn’t the only thing about them that’s underrated; males are pretty great songsters too, emitting an intricate series of what is both their own little babbles and little phrases of other species songs. I even found yesterday that they are able to mimic new vocalizations on the spot. Unfortunately, these guys have the luck of returning earlier than the warblers, and they only get two weeks of fame before what many people consider the real show falls upon our forests. That’s okay, though- they get right to pairing up and nest-building and have fledged young by the end of June, so I think they couldn’t care less about how much attention we pay to them.

Lake O'Hara is one of the best-preserved places in the Canadian Rockies. It sits high in the Canadian Rockies at an elevation of 2,020m (6,627 feet). It is a beautiful sub-alpine glacial lake surrounded by the towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies. There are so many accessible trails starting right from the lake, hikers can easily spend days here without getting bored. But 11-kilometer to the lake in one way from parking lot, you can either take the shuttle or hike in. If you are lucky to reserve the shuttle, you can spare this 22-kilometer walking, save the energy to climb 10~20 kilometers mountains. Access to Lake O’Hara is strictly controlled with a reservation system, which means that it is never crowded.

Luckily got camping reservation for 3 days, it was pure nature without cell signals and electricity. Unfortunately, it was raining and cloudy most of time, plus the forest fire from Jasper, the sky was covered with foggy most of time. Here is the view of Lake O'Hara and adjacent Mary Lake, the crystal-clear lakes, hanging valleys, towering snow-capped mountains, and the pristine nature that shows the best Yoho National Park has to offer.

I don’t feel sad at all looking at this abandoned shed as I often do with photos of run-down places.

I’d like to think maybe with a better option, its owner had moved to a better place for a happier life.

And the dilapidated shed is still standing there not as a pitiful sight but a memory of what used to be...

Kiribilli offers great views at Sydney Harbour and is one of my favourite places to hang out, relax and to take photos. I first noticed the puddle reflection by accident on a walk along the waterfront in December 2017. I took a nice photo of Harbour Bridge and its reflection. Then, a couple of weeks later, already being back in Germany, I reviewed my photos and got the idea to merge several horizontal photos to create a panorama of the whole cityscape including the puddle reflection. With this in mind I came back to this place during my next stay in Sydney in May 2018 - everything was planned and well prepared - but unfortunately there was no puddle due to low tide. At least this was great to try the framing...but for the final photo I had to come back again. A few days later, equipped with a large bucket and a rope, I set up my tripod, filled the puddle and finally took the desired shots. Luckily this was the day before the start of Vivid Sydney - the view was great since the bridge was fully shining. The result is this merge of 5 vertical long exposure shots with my beloved EF 24mm 1.4 prime lens.

The long summer days offer many unique perspectives on the famous Elb valley line, but one must wake up very early and go to sleep late to capture them. In May I made spontaneous three day trip to the Elbetal on the account of a perfect weather forecast and the 125th anniversary festival of the Kirnitzstalbahn tramway. The schedule allowed the near perfect combination of both events, with the early morning and late evening for trains and the day for trams, but it was tiring...the early morning sun lights up the town of Koenigstein as the 06:40 S1 from Dresden rolls into the station behind a class 143. The 143s normally dont work the S1 nowdays but due to a shortage of 146s atleast three sets per day were operating with them on my visit.

During courtship/bonding in the breeding season, male bee-eaters offer insect 'snacks' to females. Here on the branch are two males, left and middle (with the dragonfly) and the female to the right. Bothe sexes are alike with this species but females can often be separated from males by body size...but not always.

These migratory birds can be found as far north as Finland and as far south as South Africa, extending east into some Asiatic countries too. Most commonly, European Bee-eaters will breed and nest in southern Europe, then migrate south during autumn and winter.

European bee-eaters live for five to six years. The difficulties of migration and avoiding predators along the way affect every bird. Bee-eaters today also find it harder to find food, as there are fewer insects around as a result of pesticides.

The fire lily bears large, bright orange-red flowers that create a firework display in the garden. Therefore, it's not surprising that it is a highly sought-after garden plant.

But this well-known lily is unfortunately rarely offered because propagation is relatively time-consuming. The brood buds that form in the leaf axils only develop into flowering bulbs after several years.

Ha, and I have it in my garden! 😀

The fire lily grows wild in the foothills of the Alps and from South Tyrol to the Pyrenees.

Lilium bulbiferum is classified as endangered on the German Red List. It is therefore of particular ecological value.

Feuerlilie (Lilium bulbiferum)

Fantastic Caverns was discovered in 1862 by an Ozarks farmer -- or more precisely, by his dog, who crawled through a small entrance in a hillside. It wasn't until five years after its discovery that the first exploration of Fantastic Caverns took place: twelve women from Springfield, answering a newspaper ad seeking explorers, ventured into the cave. Fantastic Caverns is one of more than 7,300 documented caves in Missouri, and more are still being discovered. Missouri is called The Cave State.

Georgian folk dances impress with their brightness, incredible fire, sumptuous costumes and the interweaving of history with art. They give incredibly great pleasure to both the audience and the dancers themselves. No one has remained indifferent after such a spectacle! Today we offer you to get acquainted with the most famous Georgian folk dances and learn a little about their history:

Georgian National Dances: General information

The exact date of the origin of Georgian national dances is not known. However, it is supposed that the Georgian dancing folk was mentioned for the first time before our era.

In different parts of the country during many years were appearing unique dancing movements which have passed from generation to generation. And you will note that the dances of mountainous region inhabitants are characterized by sharp and rapid movements while the dance movements of plain inhabitants are smooth. Each Georgian national dance requires special costumes which resemble the clothes of inhabitants of different regions.

I want to take a moment and celebrate all my Flickr contacts as well - I chose to photograph a section of my kitchen chair (above) as a symbol of the friendship I have with most of you. The strands represent all of you, coming together to form a single point of strength and every day providing me with support and most of all encouragement. As with the chair, every strand counts - from the most timid but consistent "fave" (you know who you are) to the most flamboyant award giver (you know who you are too!). Please know that all this support combined has helped to up my quality and has stirred my imagination to a degree I never thought possible. We must learn to trust what we see and photograph it in the best possible way. Thank you and here's to quality, good fortune and honest opinions!

The capital Luxembourg offers its visitors four Christmas markets. At the Place de la Constitution there are 41 houses around the monument to “Gëlle Fra”. The “Golden Christmas Tree”, which is placed at the top of the square, the giant pyramid and the Ferris wheel are also waiting for Christmas fans big and small. The panoramic view of the Petrusse Valley and the Adolphe Bridge is fascinating.

Procida is the smallest island of the Gulf of Naples; it is rich in attractions and archaeology. From the ground floor of Napoli Centro train station, you can take the metro to station Pozzuoli then get off and take the ferry at the port of Pozzuoli. The architecture of Procida has a Greek origin. In fact, the history of Procida is concentrated first of all on the medieval village “Terra Murata” and on “Corricella”, the fishing settlement. The island has served as the set for numerous films, such as The “Postman”, and some scenes in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” were shot on Corricella. The landmarks of Procida reflect typical Mediterranean pastel colours. Procida offers simply cooking and at least 10 excellent restaurants with plain cooking based on fresh fish. This simple style never fails, thanks to the 20 local fishing boats. The specialties of the cooking are: stewed rabbit (which goes back to the Borbonen who came on Procida to hunt the wild rabbit) and spaghetti with sea-urchin. Procida has 6 beaches with crystal-clear waters. Spent some relaxing days on this wonderful island. Experience the real Italy, lovely people, great views, great sand and great food.

The best way to get to procida is travelling to Pozzuoli first ,beautiful as well as other districts of Naples, by train where you will find marina with ferries. Before reaching the Island, you'll enjoy wonderful views of Faro Capo Miseno and its lighthouse. From the lighthouse you have Incredible views of Capri, Procida, Ischia, Pocinda, Baia, Pozzouli, Sorrento, Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. Bout a 20 minute hike to the top. Paved with stone steps all the way. Photo of Capo Miseno looking over the mussel beds in the approaches to Porto Miseno.

Courtship starts with an aerial display with the male calling and carrying the fish to attract a mate. Female will follow him up in the sky and once back on the beach she may accept the offer and if she does then they will mate.

The Blue-headed Vireo offers a pleasing palette of moss green, bluish gray, and greenish yellow, set off by bold white “spectacles” (the eyering plus a “loral” spot next to the bill), throat, and belly. The wings and tail are a sharp black and white. Like most larger vireos, Blue-headed forages for insects and their larvae in trees, moving deliberately along branches, where it can be challenging to spot. Males sing a slow, cheerful carol, often the first indication of the species’ presence in a forest. All About Birds

Pier 7, Embarcadero, SFO, offers the best view of Bay, Bay Bridge, Treasure Island and San Francisco Financial District on the other side.

A stroll here in the late evening is an awesome experience with dazzling lights all around! Its a long walk to the end of the Pier.

I am definitely one for the natural world rather than man made constructions, however there is only so long you can ignore a visit to the likes of Salford Queys. Yes, I would have preferred it before the transition when in my childhood it acted as the inland port for Manchester. Boats and warehouses would have offered much more interest to me. Todays bright lights provide employment, retail and housing and offer up a modern and distinctive skyline. The flat calm water in the old docks of course provide some fine reflections of the neon illuminated towers.

I’d noticed the striking white building with its handsome blue roof as we’d passed this way a day earlier, mustering our spirits as best we could under a grey, leaky sky that gave no hint of the beautiful evening we’d later enjoy by the side of the lake at Kirkjufell. I’d also spotted the rough pull in where the road snaked gently upwards through a patch of rocky scrub. “That might make for a shot,” was only the vaguest of thoughts as we passed through this remote area, heading for Arnarstapi and Dritvik Beach beyond. At this stage, the only thing we were certain of was that we’d passed the road that led to the Black Church of Budir and not taken it. And as we were following a circuit on the lonely road of West Snaefellsnes, we knew we’d need to be back this way the following day. That black church screams for attention you see. One of the most impossible to ignore hotspots on a peninsula that offers all sorts of possibilities.

So now we were here again, this time travelling anticlockwise on the most fantastic of coastal roads. Coming from a densely populated country where the sound of the internal combustion engine dominates almost every waking moment, driving here is an unrelenting joy. The Útnesvegur takes you through a brutal and dramatic landscape, where the story of Iceland’s violent volcanic birth is forever on show. In the far western reaches, we drove for miles, flanked by moss filled lava fields, roughly hewn and worn by the rages of a thousand winter storms, barely seeing any other vehicles at all. At times only the bulk of the ice clad Snaefellsjokull, rising mightily above everything else here seemed to anchor us to the land as if by some gravitational pull. A harsh elemental landscape in a time and place that has crept in under my skin and stayed there to settle into a contented glow that burns slowly within, forever calling me back. Having more time to explore on this, our second Icelandic adventure, was enabling us to see gems we’d had no time for on that dash around the ring road three summers earlier. You could easily fill an entire visit to Iceland with Snaefellsnes alone.

By now I was in a particularly fine mood. We’d already bagged compositions at half a dozen spots on this amazingly productive day as we made our way around the circuit. To add to the internal satisfaction levels, I’d also visited the fish and chip van at Arnarstapi. Let’s face it, if your stomach’s rumbling it’s game over on the photography front. Hunger is a big distraction when you’re trying to take epic photos. And now, a few minutes later after a spell in gastronomy heaven, here we were, pulled in at that patch of scrub and gazing at another epic vista, filled with more of those moss covered lava flows. And a handsome blue roofed building. And some other interesting stuff, I hope you’ll agree.

It was another Super Saturday moment, grabbed in a five minute roadside stop in the grand space between Arnarstapi and Budir. Well maybe a ten minute stop for a second layer to complete the twelve exposures for this handheld panoramic view that filled the space, tailing off into a hinterland of mountains rising from the red sands of the Snaefellsnes south coast under a huge gathering of heavy clouds that promised so much, and later delivered even more. It seems that wherever you stop - when you can stop - the chances are there will be something to fill the viewfinder with. Something that you perhaps didn’t see in a million other images when you planned your own adventures. Just like so many others, I love visiting the hotspots and trying to grab those memorable moments and record them forever. That’s what we were doing for most of our two weeks here, but I also find satisfaction in those impromptu moments when I see something else. And this is definitely an image I’d urge you to look at on the big screen if you can. “Best viewed large,” I sometimes read as I enjoy your stories. And you’re always right of course.

Machu Picchu 20221127

Machu Picchu not only offers the visitor the view of the temples and stone houses that are on its cusp, but also gives a look of its terraces and irrigation systems, which give a unique personality to the Incan citadel and its surroundings.

The Functions of the Platforms

These constructions are wide steps built on the mountains’s slopes that allowed the Incas to gain land in order to develop agriculture adapted to the landscape.

Without a doubt, creating great steps meant a great effort, but without these, the constant rains, the humidity of the environment and the steepness of the area would have triggered large landslides that would have destroyed the ruins of Machu Picchu.

This terrace system fulfills three main functions:

Containment: These constructions prevented the land’s erosion from creating landslides when carrying out the construction of cities, houses and temples.

Agriculture: Through the construction of these platforms, the Incas expanded the amount of land used for agricultural activity. These terraces allowed to take advantage of the rainwater as a source of crop irrigation directly from channels that connected each of the levels. Nowadays, crops are not cultivated anymore to maintain their integrity, due to the condition of World Heritage of Machu Picchu.

Ceremonial centers: these finer and more extensive construction platforms were intended to decorate ceremonial and/or administrative centers.

After an offer of a cab ride while they loaded the last half of the train, they blasted off from the loadout. I recall they said they very rarely saw railfans at the time. Seems I chased to the Cow Springs curve and opted to swing by Monument Valley that afternoon and end up in Helper UT that night!

Katharine Docks, situated on the east side of Tower Bridge, is a tranquil oasis that offers a variety of dining and leisure activities. Despite being located close to the Tower of London; this serene location has managed to maintain its peaceful environment. St Katharine Docks has a rich history, dating back to the 12th Century, and continues to serve as a bustling hub for boats, as well as a popular destination for locals and tourists to unwind and have fun.

St Katharine Docks took their name from the former hospital of St Katharine's by the Tower, built in the 12th century, which stood on the site. An intensely built-up area, the entire 23-acre (9.5 hectares) Precinct of St Katharine by the Tower and part of East Smithfield, was earmarked for redevelopment by an act of Parliament, the St. Katharine's Dock Act 1825, with construction commencing in May 1827. Some 1,250 houses were demolished, together with the medieval hospital of St. Katharine. Around 11,300 inhabitants, mostly port workers crammed into unsanitary slums, lost their homes; only the property owners received compensation. The scheme was designed by engineer Thomas Telford and was his only major project in London. George Turnbull and James Waylen were working for Telford. To create as much quayside as possible, the docks were designed in the form of two linked basins (East and West), both accessed via an entrance lock from the Thames. Steam engines designed by James Watt and Matthew Boulton kept the water level in the basins about four feet above that of the tidal river. By 1830, the docks had cost over £2 million to build.

Telford aimed to minimise the amount of quayside activity and specified that the docks' warehouses (designed by the architect Philip Hardwick) be built right on the quayside so that goods could be unloaded directly into them.

The docks were officially opened on 25 October 1828. Although well used, they were not a great commercial success and were unable to accommodate large ships. They were amalgamated in 1864 with the neighbouring London Docks. In 1909, the Port of London Authority took over the management of almost all of the Thames docks, including St Katharine Dock. By the 1930s the only regular use was by ships of the General Steam Navigation Company.

St Katharine Docks were badly damaged by German bombing during the Second World War. All the warehouses around the eastern basin were destroyed, and the site they had occupied remained derelict until the 1960s.

The dock entrance lock was rebuilt in 1957 but the docks ceased commercial use in 1968. The remaining wharehouses on the western side were demolished to make way for redevelopment.

Ford offered a 5cwt Van version of the Ford Model Y from 1932 to 1937 with the 933cc sidevalve engine. In 1936 Ford commercials adopted the name 'Fordson'. The Model Y was developed into the English-designed Ford 7Y 8hp in 1937 and a 5cwt Fordson Van was based on this model.
