The Hetet School of Maori art kindly offered free online tuition on how to weave a kono (4 sided basket) and rourou (5 sided basket). I watched the first one before going outside and to my delight the flax I bought about 15 years ago was the perfect one for weaving.

Chose a few leaves for my first basket ensuring there was no rain forecast and made sure I left the middle 3 leaves (else the flax may not survive). I followed the instructions and cut the leaves into 10mm wide strips which are known as whenu. Then to strip out the moisture each piece is run over a knife 3 times on each side. Once all 16 were done the weaving began.

I really enjoyed the whole process and was pretty stoked how well they turned out. I've made 4 more since these ones including 2 in cardboard which is rather different to work with. The feathers on the kono are from a kereru fight I witnessed above my driveway. A small poof of feathers parachuted to the ground. They were of course all collected for future decorating.

Piran is probably the most beautiful of Slovenia's coastal towns, perched on a tiny piece of land jutting into the sea. It feels more like an Italian coastal town, without all the Italian tourists, and for good reason: Piran was part of the Venetian empire from the late 13th century to the end of the 18th century.

Piran is an extremely picturesque small Italianate city on the Adriatic coast of Slovenia. It is one of Slovenia's four coastal cities, including Izola, Koper, and Portoroz. It's Italian styling is due to its proximity to the Italian border and once belonged to Italy. The boat harbor is full of small colorful fishing boats. The main square is near the sea and full of activity. The streets are typical narrow winding medieval streets that are a joy to explore and find hidden squares inside the various neighborhoods. The Church on the hill is complete with a separate bell tower and baptistry. There is a walkway connecting the churchyard to a beach along the shore. The small peninsula of the city hosts a beautiful pedestrian street of various restaurants with delicious seafood and a gorgeous view of the sunset over the adjacent peninsula (in Croatia). The lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is unique.

Piran offers great views of the small Slovene coastline, including views of nearby Trieste, large shipping vessels, and rolling hills. Hidden treasures include an old aquarium, steep winding streets, and local people fishing from the shore.

Iceland

Huldujökull is part of the larger Mýrdalsjökull glacier and forms a horseshoe-shaped valley with numerous waterfalls cascading directly from the glacier into the valley below. The size and volume of some of these waterfalls are epic.

The Huldujökull hike in Þakgil leads along a beautiful valley.

The landscape is typically Icelandic, and you can practically see the forces of nature that shaped it. A stunning area of Iceland that still offers hikes in seclusion. Þakgil offers the best hiking trails near Vík.

New findings from NASA’s Juno probe orbiting Jupiter provide a fuller picture of how the planet’s distinctive and colorful atmospheric features offer clues about the unseen processes below its clouds. The results highlight the inner workings of the belts and zones of clouds encircling Jupiter, as well as its polar cyclones and even the Great Red Spot.

The hilltop offers an unrivalled view of Gyantse town, and there is a small museum documenting the excesses of the British Younhusband expedition, which severely damaged the fortress in 1904. Restoration work at the fortress has taken place in recent years, but visitors have still occasinally found it difficult to gain acces.

The original fortress of Gyel-khar-tse (རྒྱལ་ཁར་ རྩེ་ rgyal khar rtse) is attributed to Pelkhor-tsen, son of the anti-Buddhist king Langdarma, who vainly sought to perpetuate the Yarlung Dynasty from West Tibet following the assassination of his father.

The walls of the present structure were reputedly built in 1268, following the rise to power of the Sakyapas, and in 1365 a palatial castle was founded on the hilltop by the local prince, Phakpa Pelzangpo (1318-1370), who had acquired influence at the court in Sakya through his reputation as a brave general in the southern military campaigns conducted by his Sakyapa overlords, and at Zhalu, where in 1350 he entered into a marriage alliance with the lords of Zhalu. As dowry he was granted the fiefdom of Changra, west of Gyantse, and he invited the great Buddhist master Buton Rinchendrub of Zhalu to reside in a temple which he had constructed there. In 1365, in addition to the Gyantse Castle, he also founded the Tsechen Chode (Shambu Tsegu) castle and temple complex at the entrance to the Gyantse valley and adopted it as his principal seat. The incarnation of Buton, Drubchen Kunga Lodro, also resided there.

HPPT !

After fifteen years, Michael Raedecker returns to The Hague with a major solo. Not everyone is offered the most beautiful place - downstairs, next to the garden room - but his work is unique. No one embroiders so ingeniously and effectively: highlighting a painterly sketch or downright obstructing it.

MICHAEL RAEDECKER EMBROIDERS

FURTHER THAN ANYONE ELSE

Regular visitors know. The first painting behind the glass entrance door sets the tone. Do not seek guidance in the introductory text that brings up too many side issues. Just look carefully and take the time to ask yourself a few open questions. Does the image grab you by the throat? Or does it make you sink in thoughts? Does the painter want to hurt your eyes, or does he want to seduce you? He may even avoid you a little, every artist has his own strategy. Rest assured; you can trust your intuition. Answers will follow. The subconscious immediately goes to work.

The Raedecker exhibition starts with a swimming pool. Private, that is, so we zoom in on the 'American Dream'. Is that dream still attractive? A nervous, somewhat ominous atmosphere lingers around the blue water. A diving board tries to lure you into a foolish act, be careful not to hit the bottom or the side. Making a bomb may be a better idea. A few bounces up and down the board and then a big splash. But after a few times, the fun wears off. Is there any fun in pools like this? The seat at the edge lends itself to a bathrobe and a towel but is not lazy enough to sit on for long. The steps to climb out of the water are also tiny. Everything considered, it is a worthless swimming pool. Why would anyone want something like that in his backyard?

Anyone who reaches a certain status in life seems to be condemned to it. A house with a swimming pool, expensive cars on the driveway, and perhaps an extramarital lover to take the stress away. It's all part of the attainable dreams of a wealthier class. However, the situation Raedecker describes is far from relaxed, the black plants even look threatening. The fact that pink and yellow shine through only makes it more sinister. Where is everyone? This is a false idyll, and the exhibition title hammers the cause into your brain with two sharp blows: MATERIAL WORLDS. Behind such words lies social criticism in wait.

MATERIAL PAINTER

Michael Raedecker (1963, Amsterdam) leaves all interpretations to the viewer. He looks from above, at our concerns on this planet, and what he thinks about them he hides in ambiguous titles (always in small letters). It’s a game to penetrate the ideas behind it. Material Worlds evokes the much vaunted and loathed 'global economy' dominated by a materialist ideology. The system has shameless winners and elsewhere (outside our view) entire tribes of people who are exploited without scruples. Not to mention the consequences for nature and the climate. These aspects are discussed time and again in disguise.

However, viewed up close, 'Material Worlds' also applies to the technique he developed as an artist. He uses an ingenious mixture of paint and fabrics. For scaling up he uses printing techniques. Most strikingly, however, is the sewing and embroidery. Technically speaking, he is a 'painter with matter' and a confrontation with his work becomes a physical sensation. Viewed from a distance, the whole image seems clear, but you are automatically drawn in and viewed up close, the use of materials provides additional information: the swimming pool discussed appears to contain 'mirrors and beads'...

More famous artists work with fabrics, but with Raedecker you sense the need to exploit the material in a new, completely original way. After a fashion study, he went to Paris. However, the world of Haute Couture, in which everyone is a manic work slave, did not suit him. He quit after just three months. In terms of character, he is a pure soloist. A necessary quality to lead an artistic life. Via the Dutch Rietveld and Rijksacademie, he ended up at the Goldsmith Academy in London and got stuck in that metropolis. It earned him a nomination for the famous Turner Prize in 2000. Although he did not get it, international contacts opened up. His gallery operates worldwide.

ALL ALONE

The Art Museum in The Hague provides a balanced picture of the past thirty years. The tests with which he was accepted at the National Academy already testify to his originality. What many people underestimate is the price you pay for success. At great heights, you are completely alone. That is reflected in all his work.

But isn't that true of every mortal? We communicate all our hopes, gains, and misfortunes on our smartphones, yet everyone arrives at the finish line alone. That realization is a major constant in Raedecker's work. Again, where is everyone? There is no living soul to be seen in his paintings, while traces of human presence can be found everywhere. Anonymous bungalows are situated in empty landscapes, often with double garages. Because of movies that almost no one can avoid these days, the bungalow - a typical American form of architecture - quickly evokes dramatic stories. What is about to happen is unclear, but Raedecker directs the emotions toward fearful suspicions with all-pervading colors and well-aimed details. When such a lonely bungalow is swallowed up by the dark blue night, five stiff trees are enough to evoke a thriller. Why is the garage left wide open? Brightly lit and empty…

Anyone who walks back to the beginning of the exhibition – highly recommended! – stumbles upon a nighttime swimming pool. Nobody uses it.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight offers one of the most astounding sights in American train travel, a sight comparable to the view of Mount Robson from the Canadian. Mount Shasta rises to 14,179 feet, one of the highest mountains in the 48 continental states. The location is in northern California, quite close to the Oregon state line.

In this scene, we are to the north of the mountain, looking back at its north face.

This shot (admittedly from the open window in a vestibule door, something I'm not supposed to do) is from my northbound ride to Seattle, Washington from Salinas, California in April, 2010. Even this inveterate train rider had no idea that the Coast Starlight offered views of Mt. Shasta that are quite this close-up and spectacular.

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat, closed sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors. Later it was offered as an open roadster. It was the fastest production car of its day.

Built by Daimler-Benz AG and internally numbered W198, the fuel-injected road version was based (somewhat loosely) on the company's highly successful competition-only sports car of 1952, the somewhat less powerful carbureted Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W194).

The road model was suggested by Max Hoffman. Being intended for customers in the booming post-war American market it was introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, unlike previous models introduced at either the Frankfurt or Geneva shows. In Mercedes-Benz fashion, the "300" referred to the engine's three litre cylinder displacement. The "SL" stood for "Sport Leicht" (Sport Light).

The 300SL was best known for both its distinctive gull wing doors and being the first-ever four-stroke car equipped with a Gasoline direct injection. The gull wing version was available from March 1955 to 1957. Production of the roadster ended in 1963 with the introduction of the 230SL.

New York Mercedes distributor Max Hoffman, Daimler-Benz's official importer in the USA, suggested to DBAG management in Stuttgart that a street version of the 300SL would be a commercial success, especially in America.

The racing W194 300SL was built around a tubular chassis to offset its relatively underpowered carbureted engine. Designed by DBAG's chief developing engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the metal skeleton saved weight while still providing a high level of strength. Its unique architecture gave birth to the model's distinctive gull wing doors, as part of the chassis passed through what would be the lower half of a standard door. Even with the upward opening doors, the 300SL had an unusually high sill, making entry and exit from the car's cockpit problematic. A steering wheel with a tilt-away column was added to improve driver access.

The 300SL's body was mainly steel, except for the aluminum hood, doors and trunk lid. It could also be ordered with an all-aluminium outer skin at tremendous added cost, saving 80 kg (176 lb).

More than 80% of the vehicle's total production of approximately 1400 units were sold in the US, making the Gull wing the first Mercedes-Benz which sold in bulk outside its home market and confirming the validity of Hoffman's suggestion. The 300SL is credited for changing the company's image in America from a manufacturer of solid, but staid, automobiles to that of a producer of sporty cars.

The 300SL's engine, canted at a fifty-degree angle to the left to allow for a lower hoodline, was the same 3.0 litre straight-6 as the regular four-door 300. Fitted with a Bosch mechanical Gasoline direct injection system it had almost double the power of the original 86 kW (115 hp) carbureted version.

While not the first fuel-injected car - Mercedes engineers who had developed the principle for the DB 601 fighter aircraft engine had used fuel injection in the tiny 2-stroke Gutbrod they had designed after the War - it was the first to inject fuel directly into the cylinders. This innovation allowed a top speed of up to 260 km/h (161 mph) depending on gear ratio and drag, making the 300SL the fastest production car of its time.

The engine's maintenance requirements were high. Unlike the current electrically-powered fuel injection systems, the mechanical fuel pump would continue to inject gasoline into the engine during the interval between shutting off the ignition and the engine's coming to a stop; this gasoline was of course not burned, and washed the oil from the cylinder walls and ended up diluting the engine's lubricating oil, particularly if the engine was not driven hard enough nor long enough to reach a temperature high enough to evaporate it out of the oil.

Exacerbating the problem were the large oil cooler as well as the large volume of oil (10 liters), both oriented more to racing than to street driving, which virtually guaranteed that the oil would not reach a high enough temperature. In practice, many street drivers would block off airflow through the oil cooler, and the recommended oil change interval was 1,000 miles (1,600 km). Operation of the clutch was initially very heavy, later roadsters having an improved clutch arm helper spring which reduced the pedal force. From March 1963 to the end of production, a light alloy crankcase was used on a total of 209 vehicles.[2]

Aerodynamics played an important role in the car's speed, Mercedes-Benz engineers even placing horizontal "eyebrows" over the wheel openings to reduce drag. Unlike many cars of the 1950s, the steering was relatively precise and the four-wheel independent suspension allowed for a reasonably comfortable ride and markedly better overall handling. However, the rear swing axle, jointed only at the differential, not at the wheels themselves, could be treacherous at high speeds or on imperfect roads due to extreme changes in camber.

In 1952, the original 300SL (model Mercedes-Benz W194) [3] scored overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in Bern-Bremgarten, in the sportscar race of the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, and in Mexico's Carrera Panamericana. It also managed second and fourth places at its first outing, the Mille Miglia in 1952.

These successes, especially those on the high speed open road races, were rather surprising as the engine then was fitted only with carburetors, producing 175 hp (130 kW), which was not only less than the competing cars by Ferrari and Jaguar, but also less than the road car of 1954. Low weight and low aerodynamic drag made the 300SL fast enough to be competitive in endurance races.

Starting from the great outdoor . Scotland has a lot to offer when it comes to scenic and landscape . Throughout the seasons , 3 cold and 1 less cold the landscape , light and colour are forever changing . Loch Etive is one of those places worth heading towards . A short paddle away you will face the grand scenery , the snow top mountains and the abounding wildlife . It might be cold for a few hours but certainly it’s scenic .

The weather forecast can be diabolical . The BBC weather forecast will make you stay at home . Looking at the predicted weather only a day in advance the wind was supposedly meant to blow to 20 to 30 miles per hour . However on the day it was certainly flat calm . Just like fake news it’s certainly disappointing .

Companionship is and always be an important factor in extreme kayaking . Kayak fishing is a safe sport , group kayaking is extremely safe and help is always at hand .

Fishing and catching make us do go back , fresh and scenic , top destination for a great cool adventure . Scotland and loch etive today , somewhere else tomorrow , keeping on paddling .

Canada offered us wonderful birds! this is just a small sample of the species we found!

Many thanks for your comments, faves, and follows :)

Sunset into early twilight offers the best balance between the very bright station lights and an evening sky, with some traffic light trails for added interest; but to get them all together I ended up taking 120 exposures over 46 minutes. First the post sunset but still sunlit clouds at top were captured with just a regular polarizer, at that time most of the station lights were still off. Then some long exposures of the sunset sky were done using neutral density filters and the polarizer. As the station lights came on the neutral density filter was substituted with a Gold-N-Blue polarizer to add/keep some color in the then darkening sky (most visible in the upper right third of the image above); in between which a number of exposures were made of passing vehicles to capture some light trails. From those 6 light trail exposures were selected and combined using lighten layer mode, to which 2 earlier exposures of the sky - one short and one long exposure - were blended together with the sky and light trail images using layer modes and masks yielding the sunset with station light image I came hoping to capture. The 8 exposures used spanned 13 minutes of the sunset; most of the other exposures taken were of various vehicle light trails that were ultimately not used… see tags for additional details. Really looking forward to when the Orange Line opens next month and there'll be some bus and light rail cross traffic light trails to capture and play with, on some future evening with a great sunset/twilight sky again. Word of Odge’s craft circulated around the streets of Hweg Shul which caught the attention of a local smuggler.

Originally from Nar Shadda, Redsbi Skeet had carved out a semi-respectable business running goods and information from system to system. As he was always in need of some new talent, he approached Odge with a deal: some new E-Wing engines in trade for a few jobs.

Though unsure of Skeet’s true intentions, Odge was in need of propulsion for his ship and reluctantly took the deal

There's a strength in womanhood that I find so interesting. It's tough and resilient hiding in the eyes of nearly every woman I know. The world isn't always kind to us but we flow, adapt, and grow stronger with each day.

It was International Women's Day yesterday and while in so many ways the battle for equality continues, let's celebrate the beauty in our collective sisterhood. If the women's march showed anything it's our strength in solidarity and what a beautiful thing that can be. Sending all you ladies love wherever you are! ❤

There are usually two different tours offered by the ice cave tour operators: an approximately three-hour tour that takes you to an ice cave for a tour of the ice cave and a five- to six-hour tour of a remote ice cave. This latter tour is connected with an approximately one-hour hike across the glacier. Since this "fatigue" deters many tourists, the cave is also less crowded. This, in turn, is the reason why I usually choose the longer tour. However, this year my plan did not work out: in the Breiðamerkurjökull east of the Jökulsárlón, there were no further ice caves available, so that all tours had the so-called "Crystal Cave" as their destination. Accordingly, the number of visitors was a bit higher and it was not possible to photograph the cave completely without people. However, the people do not even bad as a scale...

Ugolino di Prete Ilario (Siena, 1330 around - 1404) Melchisedec offers bread and wine to Abraham that blesses it - frescos of the Chapel of the Corporal (between 1357 and 1364)- Cathedral of Orvieto

According to popular tradition, the Cathedral of Orvieto was built to celebrate a fundamental event for all of Christianity: the miracle of Bolsena in 1263. In the summer of 1263 a Bohemian priest, tormented by doubts about the presence of the body and blood of Christ in the consecrated host, went on a pilgrimage to Rome to strengthen his faith. On his way back, he stopped in Bolsena to celebrate mass on the altar of the Basilica of Santa Cristina, at the moment of consecration he saw some drops of blood ooze from the broken host, which wet the linen cloth used in the functions, the Corporal. Learned the news of the prodigy, pope Urbano IV, that from 1262 resided to Orvieto, sent to Bolsena the bishop of the city to conduct in the Church of Saint Maria the relic of the sacred linen that, welcomed from the pontiff on the bridge of Rio Chiaro, was accompanied up to the goal from a solemn procession. The existing cathedral seemed to Orvieto's citizens too modest to keep such a precious relic, so much so that they decided to build a new religious building, adequate to such a great miracle as to splendor and magnificence.

Excerpt from the plaque:

Prayers Offered at the Tomb of Imam Husayn: This folio and its accompanying text emphasize the importance of sharing water resources. A 14th-century prince of the Jochid Mongols and a group of commanders are shown praying at the tomb of Imam Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the third Imam of Shik Muslims. The prince is expressing his gratitude for receiving a share of water. The painting and its accompanying text allude to the Battle of Karbala in 61 AH / 680 AD where Husayn and his companions were denied access to water of the Euphrates River by the Opposing army.

According to medieval Islamic political theory and practice, one of the ways to establish oneself as a just and legitimate ruler was to ensure everyone in the kingdom had access to water and that wells are irrigation were maintained.

When Cinderella arrived at the palace, it was the king’s son who offered her his hand as she alighted from her golden coach. He led her into the palace to join the glittering company gathered there. Upon her entry to the ballroom there was an immediate and profound silence. Everyone stopped dancing, the musicians ceased to play, and all heads turned, so entranced was everyone with the singular beauty of the unknown newcomer. Nothing was then heard but a confused noise of, "Who is she? Do we know her? How wonderful her gown! How elegant her hairstyle! How beautiful she is!" The king himself, old as he was, could not help watching her, and telling the queen softly that it was a long time since he had seen so beautiful and lovely a creature.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 8th of January is “portray a fairy tale”. This theme was made for me, as I love faerie tales, which were very much a part of my childhood when my beloved maternal Grandmother used to read me stories from an old book of faerie tales. Over the years, I have never lost the love, or the magic of faerie tales and these stories are as enjoyable and as fresh to me as they were when I first heard them. I now tell them to my godchildren, instilling in them the same love of old folk and faerie tales from around the world, complete with the darkness so many of them contain in their original versions. The only difficulty I faced with this theme was, out of all the things I could do, which one would I pick?

Over the last few years, I have been photographing different faerie tales I love using Playmobil characters to dramatise the tales. I have about fifty to sixty stories completed now, some of which I have uploaded to Flickr, but most have yet to see the light of day here, so I could have chosen a more obscure faerie tales like the Grimm Brothers’ “King Thrushbeard”, “the Sea Hare” or “Mother Hollie” or the Estonian faerie tale of “The Waterlily and the three Golden Spinners”, just to name a few, however I have opted for what would generally be agreed is the world’s most famous and beloved faerie tale of “Cinderella”. This is just one photograph of many that I have taken to illustrate the Grimm Brother’s version “Ashenputtel” which features no faerie godmother, although the text above comes from the more commonly known “Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper” by Charles Perrault. I do hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.

Playmobil is a line of toys produced by the Brandstätter Group, headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany. Production began in 1974. Playmobil began to be sold worldwide in 1975, and by 2009, approximately 2.2 billion Playmobil figures had been sold. The signature Playmobil toy is a 7.5 cm tall human figure with a particular smiling face. In 2006 Playmobil released three Fairy Tale Sets, including set 4213 which was a Cinderella set, which today is highly sought after. It contains four characters, all of which I have included here: Cinderella in the foreground, the king’s son in the midground to the right of Cinderella and her two stepsisters who are midground to the left of the photo. To complete her family, I have added her stepmother in the black and gold dress and her father in the cream hat with the red beard (as in the Grimm Brothers’ version, both father and stepmother play a more significant part in the tale). I have also included the king and queen and various ball guests including a joker with his yellow hat.

A wide range of accessories, buildings and vehicles, as well as many sorts of animals, are also part of the Playmobil line. Playmobil toys are produced in themed series of sets as well as individual special figures and playsets. New products and product lines developed by a 50-strong development team are introduced frequently, and older sets are discontinued. Promotional and one-off products are sometimes produced in very limited quantities. These practices have helped give rise to a sizeable community of collectors.
