ATV Off-roading Trilogy (aka Quad Trilogy): Hillside Rollover, Mud Hole, River Crossing
I have a long list of various off-roading scenes I want to build all based on photos I take while quadding (that's why my scenes always have me taking photos in them!). I decided to do the River Crossing back in 2016. I had tried the water technique in a previous build and finally got enough of the 8x8 plates to make this scene work.
In early 2017 I found out about BrickCan and thought I should build more off-road scenes to take to the show. I came up with the idea of a 'trilogy' of quad scenes - 3 different scenes, each showing a specific action with slightly different settings, but presented as one 'story'. So I chose scenes of getting stuck in a mud hole (which I had built previously, but wanted to do a 'better' version), and rolling a quad on a hillside, as I thought they fit together with the river crossing as a good story.
The ATV Off-roading Trilogy travelled to a few different shows in 2017 (several times in a suitcase!):
- BrickCan (Richmond, BC - *won "It's a Thing" award)
- Brickspo (Moose Jaw, SK - *won "Best of Town")
- Brix n Blox (Calgary, AB)
- BrickCon (Seattle, WA)
- BricksLA (Los Angeles, CA) in 2018
I photographed it back in 2017, but it was before I really knew how to do backdrops, and was instead spending tons of time post-processing in PS to get a floating white background. That is a LOT of work when you have things like trees with irregular outlines. Unfortunately I had to take apart the builds before I learned to photograph them better. Now over 2 years later I finally gave up on the editing, and am just going to post the pics as-is - hopefully the backgrounds aren't too distracting!

I taught a class on commercial photography where we used my 2021 Ford Bronco as the subject matter. I showed the class how to "use what you have" in a creative way to deliver deliverable material to a client. In this case we faked an off-roading scene in a parking lot with a wooded lot adjacent to it.
