For as long as I remember, I've been driving past this place. The way it stands alone, the brilliant colours, and roughness has always caught my attention, even when I was a little girl. It's on one of those roads that gets hit the hardest in winter. Once a snowstorm starts they sometimes shut it down because of the crazy wind and incredible high drifts! So basically, this place disappears yet every spring, here it stands. And for that I got a whole lot love for this tough little place that been weathered and worn to perfection.
Happy Monday all!!!

"Don't feel like talking all too much
There is a storm that is ascending now
Feels like it's close enough to touch
So I step back into it
Lonely weather
And you can stay here if you want
But is it worth it if my limbs don't follow?.."

For the 21-day photo challenge in order to celebrate Flickr's 21st birthday!
My submission for day 2: Dots.

Completely exposed to the elements and maybe a little worn but there it stays tough and determined. A lionheart, if I can name an inanimate object that.
I love that word and its description. And in a week where I've been the opposite of it, I'm taking it and writing it on my heart. Thank goodness that I'm surrounded by some good lionhearted friends.
I'm happily moving into the end of my week and into a long weekend! Happy Friday all!!

"I'll be the calm
I will be quiet
Stripped to the bone, I wait
No, I'll be a stone, I'll be the hunter
A tower that casts a shade
I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes
I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes
I lie awake and watch it all
It feels like thousand eyes
I am the storm..."

Happy Monochrome Bokeh Thursday, everyone!
Cats are an excellent company in this days of confinement.
Maybe this is my best cat photograph, so far, what do you think?
"...The forest that once was green
Was colored black by those killing machines
But she and her furry friends
Took down the queen bee and her men
And that's how the story goes
The story of the beast with those four dirty paws"

No matter where I sleep, you are haunting me

"Love my name
Love left dry
Frost or flame
Skeleton me
Fall asleep
Spin the sky
Skeleton me
Love, don't cry
Soon comes rain
Dry your eyes
Frost or flame
Skeleton me
Fall asleep
Spin the sky
Skeleton me
Love, don't cry"

Almost five years ago, I took a photograph of my eldest son in this very same place. He has grown-up, but he has the same energy, he is more mature, and he fills up our hearts, he is our Lion heart.

"When the words weigh heavy on the heart
I am lost and led only by the stars
Cage me like an animal
A crown with gems and gold
Eat me like a cannibal
Chase the neon throne
Breathe in, breathe out
Let the human in
Breathe in, breathe out
And let it in
Plants awoke and they slowly grow
Beneath the skin"

Alone, I fight these animals.
Alone, until I get home.
Coming back, I’m coming back.
She follows me into the woods,
takes me home.
The talented Sarah reminded me today that we've been meaning to collaborate on "Music Monday"... basically, a weekly reminder to share songs within the Flickr community. I don't know about you, but I'm always on the lookout for new music, and I don't always have time for extensive searches to find it. So if anyone has a few good songs to share, have at it!
This image is grainy and underexposed, but I rather like the imperfection of it. That, and it seems to match up with Of Monsters and Men's Six Weeks so very well. Interestingly enough, the band based this song loosely on a story about an American frontiersman that was mauled by a bear, left for dead, and spent six weeks crawling his way back to civilization.
...I often find that line from "Sloom" by Monsters and Men wandering around in my head, peeking itself into dusty little corners of my mind, awaking dreams and ideas. That line, and this one:
The books that I keep by my bed are full of your stories
That I drew up from a little dream of mine, a little nightmare of yours
What an intriguing idea, yes? One person's dream, another person's nightmare. And the line is sung with such soft sweetness that you don't really expect the word "nightmare" to be in there, which makes it all the more interesting. (And also... you'll find the lyrics for this song are different depending on where you look. Some sources say it's "The books that I keep by my bags". Some say bed. I like bed better, so I'm going with that.)
Anyway. This is the Oregon Coast at magic hour. I'd argue that every hour is magic hour at the coast, but I've got places to go and things to do. ;-)

//
Here is the northern side of "La digue du Break", a 7km-long dike and wild beach, where eveyone can park his car close to the sea, like in Daytona Beach ou at the Piémanson beach in Arles. Quite a busy place when the wind direction chases the pollution away, an alternative choice to the official Dunkirk beach in Malo-les-Bains...

You're gone, gone, gone away,
I watched you disappear.
All that's left is a ghost of you.
Now we're torn, torn, torn apart,
there's nothing we can do,
Just let me go, we'll meet again soon.
Though the truth may vary
this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore.
I'm currently obsessed with this song. I stumbled across the group - Of Monsters & Men - and have been thoroughly enjoying their music, especially this song and another, "Six Weeks". Good stuff.
And this image, made with the Hasselblad, is of the Cliffs of Moher. The unforgettable, never disappointing, sweepingly beautiful Cliffs of Moher.

A fantastic magic creature, called "alebrije", part of a street exhibition in the streets of Mérida.
Alebrijes (Spanish pronunciation: [aleˈβɾixes]) are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. The first alebrijes, along with invention of the term, originated with Mexico City artisan Pedro Linares. Linares often told that in 1936, he fell very ill, and while he was in bed, unconscious, he dreamt of a strange place resembling a forest. There, he saw trees, animals, rocks, clouds that suddenly turned into something strange, some kind of animals, but, unknown animals. He saw "a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, and a lion with an eagle head", and all of them were shouting one word, "Alebrijes! Alebrijesǃ Alebrijes!" Before this happened, he was already a cartonero artisan. Upon recovery, he began recreating the creatures he saw in Cartonería, the making of three-dimensional sculptures with different types of papers, strips of papers and engrudo (glue made out of wheat flour and water).

"Stop, you're cold against the skin
You take me in your arms when walls are closing in, ooh-ooh
And I run, I run, I run, awakening my heart
But you overwhelm my lungs and it's tearing me apart
You and I will not be shaken
By the winter sound
But my voice is suffocating
In the winter sound, ooh-ooh..."

Somewhere deep in the dark
A howling beast hears us talk.
I dare you to close your eyes
And see all the colors in disguise.
Running into the night,
The earth is shaking and I see a light.

Caught this one behind my parents home. They live near a creek and is a great scene for bird watching.
This is the female red-winged blackbird, which is brown, does not have red wings and is striped.
Not much processing here, slight tweaking of highlights and shadows and added details using a high-pass filter.
I haven't picked up my camera and gone out to shoot in such a long time.
I'm going to be starting a 365 project as soon as I get my new camera so y'all will see a lot more from me. (shouldn't be too much longer)

We climbed up to the top in worn out shoes,
But she ran down, she ran down.
She ran down to the house.
A fox that gains our trust but then breaks it as he walks
Away from us, away from us.
For Music Monday, how could I help but to share another song from Of Monsters and Men? This one is called "Lakehouse".
This image, made of course with a Hasselblad 500 C/M, is from Dog Mountain last year. I plan to hike this mountain again soon, but I'm worried about trail conditions. Apparently, a big ice storm in the Gorge this past winter caused a great deal of destruction to several of the trails. The ones I know about, both with exposed Eastern sides, are Dog Mountain and Wind Mountain. Today I hiked up Wind Mountain and was flabbergasted by what I saw - only 10% or so of the trail was "normal". The remainder was covered in downed trees and small dirt slides. It was nearly impassable in places, but luckily others had gone before me and had worked out alternative paths around many of the trees. The others I just had to climb and scramble over. The hike took me twice as long as it did last year! Crazy. So now I'm wondering what Dog Mountain, which is a much longer trail in general, might be like... guess we'll find out eventually.

I'm looking for a place to start,
But everything feels so different now.
Just grab a hold of my hand,
I will lead you through this wonderland.
Water up to my knees,
But sharks are swimming in the sea.
Just follow my yellow light
And ignore all those big warning signs
Tulip fields at sunrise, as seen by my Hasselblad 500 C/M. Lyrics from "Yellow Light" by Of Monsters and Men.
When I first visited Reykjavík in 2012 I was aware of a certain amount of graffiti; not self-serving tagging but proper 'pictures', but still distinctly scrappy and of varying quality. It seems the city authorities subsequently ceased to tolerate it, resulting not in an absence of street art but a more organised approach whereby artists have approached property owners to obtain permission for more ambitious works. There have even been 'wall poetry' festivals during which street artists have collaborated with musicians.
For example, this highly-detailed mural, commissioned for the Iceland Airwaves festival in 2016, was painted by Swiss street artists WES21 and Onur with inspiration from (wonderful) Icelandic band Of Monsters And Men, specifically their song 'Empire'.
Akane ran.
Bare feet pounding, the sound of fox paws drumming the earth by her side, dirt and dust and scree flying up at their ankles. She heard the steady thud and rush of her pulse in her ears - and the heavy beat of the samurai's pummelling feet behind them - as they ran full-pelt towards the cliff edge.
Her grandmother held aloft a golden lantern - steadfast and bold and clear in the dark night - a beacon to guide her home. Grandmother Yuzuke's many tails curled and bowed softly as she craned her neck, her sharp eyes watching for her granddaughter's approach. Miyu coiled and slid elegantly through the air beside her, sighing out a long lazy plume of smoke.
The edge.
One, two, and three - the foxes leapt effortlessly into the air in one fluid bound, and across to the waiting precipice where her Grandmother stood.
Akane did not pause - compelled now not by fear but by the exhilarating thunderous call of freedom - so close now, just one more leap, just one last effort.
The kitsune mask Akane always wore in performance - (a delicate game-within-a-game: a fox pretending to be a girl, pretending to be a fox) - flew out behind her and sailed through the air, before landing, discarded, on the rocky breach behind her.
She hurled herself into the yawning chasm, and for a fraction of a second, felt herself to be suspended, held aloft in the heavens like a star.
She leapt towards home and family and safety.
And freedom.

I owe an enormous thanks to Neil Gaiman and to Of Monsters and Men and WeWereMonkeys, whose beautiful graphic novel Sandman: The Dream Hunters - and stunning video for King and Lionheart - very much inspired this.
Neil got me pondering fox spirits, which have long since fascinated me - and I discovered all sorts of interesting things that I didn't know before..... for instance, the fact that they are often known to have up to nine tails...and the greater the number of tails, the older, wiser and more powerful the creature...which is why my Grandmother Yuzuki has multiple tails... :)
And the race of Lionheart - a blaze of red hope, running against all the odds through an unforgiving and treacherous landscape, guards baying at her heels - running towards her beloved brother - has been haunting me for months.
And, as with King and Lionheart, I like stories that leave their endings open to possibility....

Sorry I've been gone for so long but I've been in Iceland! It was gorgeous there and at one point I was convinced I was in Narnia.
Throughout this trip I tried to listen to some of my favorite Icelandic artists as much as I could and quickly found a deeper meaning to their music as I explored their environment. The mysticism and beauty in the songs by Of Monsters and Men makes complete sense to me and became my soundtrack for this trip.
This photo was inspired the song "Mountain Sound". There will be many more photos to come from this trip. They might not be strong conceptually but that is because I didn't feel the need to compete with the natural beauty around me.
