An Old Fashion Christmas at the historic Hearthside House

Lincoln, RI

December 2020

"The decorations are simply breathtaking! In a nod to the builder of Hearthside, Stephen Hopkins Smith who was an ardent lover of nature and plants, the rooms are all elaborately decorated with botanical touches.

One of the highlights when visiting Hearthside is concluding your tour with a stop in the Gift Shop, which is fully stocked with a unique selection of gift items, old-fashioned toys, jewelry, books, doll clothes, and holiday ornaments in the festively-decorated shop. Give a gift, or bring home a little remembrance from your special visit to Hearthside. And when you do, you're helping support Hearthside's mission and programs!

We look forward to welcoming you to Hearthside for a brief respite from today's troubling times back to the warmth and nostalgia of an Old-Fashioned Christmas."

"The Rose Island Light, built in 1870, is on Rose Island in Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island in the United States. It is preserved, maintained and operated by The Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation.

One of a group of New England lighthouses built to an award-winning design by Vermont architect Albert Dow, Rose Island Light has sisters at Sabin Point, Pomham Rocks, and Colchester Reef. The lighthouse stands atop a bastion of Fort Hamilton, which was built in 1798-1800.

The building was abandoned as a functioning lighthouse in 1970, when the Newport Bridge was constructed nearby. In 1984, the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation was founded to restore the dilapidated light on behalf of the City of Newport, which had received it for free from the United States government. In 1987, the federal government listed the lighthouse on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1992 it was relit as a private aid to navigation.

The lighthouse is today a travel destination, reached only by boat. For a fee to the Foundation, visitors can spend a night as a guest or a week as the "lighthouse keeper," completing many of the chores required to keep the lighthouse in good condition."

Downtown, also known as Downcity, is the central economic, political, and cultural district of the city of Providence, Rhode Island. Its is bounded on the east by Canal Street and the Providence River, to the north by Smith Street, to the west by Interstate 95, and to the south by Henderson Street. I-95 serves as a physical barrier between the city's commercial core and neighborhoods of Federal Hill, West End, and Upper South Providence.

Originally known as 'Weybossett Neck' or 'Weybossett Side,' religious dissidents from the First Congregational Society established the first settlement in Downtown in 1746. Their settlement was located near present-day Westminster Street.

Downtown did not witness substantial development until the early 19th century, when Providence began compete with Newport, Rhode Island. British forces had destroyed much of Newport during the American War for Independence, making the city's merchants vulnerable to completion from Providence. This spurned the development of a commercial district along the western bank of the Providence River.

During the industrialization of the late 19th century, railroad tracks covered much of Downtown, including the Great Salt Cove and the two arms of the Providence River, the Moshassuck and the Woonasquatucket. These railroad tracks would become a hindrance to later development a century later.

Today, downtown trends toward newer development on land reclaimed from a mass of railroad tracks in the 1970s. The mass of train tracks been colloquially referred to as the "Chinese Wall". Because the land is adjacent to the state capitol, this area is often called Capitol Center.

New development includes a Westin Hotel (1993), the Providence Place Mall (1999), GTECH (2006), new condominium construction, and Waterplace Park (1994). In 2007, the Renaissance Providence Hotel opened in the long-neglected Masonic Temple building.

In 1994, the city completed to move parts of the Providence River east. This project led to the creation of Waterplace Park and the WaterFire festivals.

Days like this are the reason I have driven convertibles for the last 15 years or so.

I took the day off work, put the top down, drove to RI, shot pictures all day and got home a bit after 8pm. While I was in sun all day getting my feet in the ocean (got a little burnt, and a headache), everyone at home was getting hit with some wicked thunder storms.

The curious grave of Simon Whipple Aldrich

* this was taken at 2PM using off camera flash and NOT taken at night *

As far as I can tell, the only New England gravestones that actually have the word "vampire" carved into it. To be far, it is referring to the disease of "Consumption" or what is better known now as TB or Tuberculosis, the "wasting disease". The symptoms of TB were thought to be the act of a vampire. Today we know better.

While I cannot find any backstory to Mr. Simon Whipple Aldrich, it sure is interesting to see the word vampire spelt on a New England grave.

The stone has been stolen several times so it is now firmly cemented in place but covering or covering the fact that some of the text has been broken off during vandalism. The vampire reference is from the lines of an 1838 poem by Eliza Earle. The full text used to read:

In Memory

of

SIMON WHIPPLE

youngest son of

Col. DEXTER ALDRICH

& MARGERY his wife,

who died May 6,

1841,

aged 27 years.

~•~

Altho' consumption's vampire grasp

had seized thy mortal frame,

Thy ardent and inspiring mind

untouched, remained the same.

Beavertail Point is one of my favorite places in the world. There's nothing there except the lighthouse, a tiny aquarium and fishing, but the fresh Narragansett breeze always rejuvenates the spirit. Note the fishermen dodging the large breaker; it was quite humorous.
