This 13 inch fish is not from around these parts. The nocturnal Popeye Catalufa is found in the Pacific Ocean from California to Peru. It's also found in the Denver Aquarium, which is where I saw it : )

“You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food, he thought. You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him. Or is it more?”

I first saw the lovely island of Sri Lanka in 1986. I was mesmerized by its beauty and the kindness of the Sri Lankan people. It was then that I first saw this incredible sight. When I did a return trip a few years ago, I made certain that I stopped on the western coast of the island. I was thrilled to see that this way of life had not given way to some modern way of fishing.

We stopped at the lookout at Ho' okipa Beach, Maui, considered one of the best places in the world to windsurf. At the north end of the beach we noticed this older Hawaiian gentleman out fishing in the wild surf. It looked a bit precarious to us, but I'm sure he knew what he was doing.

I don't fish ... perhaps it is because I have Attention Deficit Disorder and also, I'm squeamish about the worm, hook, etc... however I've been told that it is an incredible stress reliever ..

This is the latest of my still life images after a fairly long while. I wanted to use food and I've been thinking about fish for a while.

This is a Pompano and I imagine it would be very good broiled after marinading for a day in the 'fridge! Ah, garlic and chili, what could be better?

From the archives. This was taken on a warm fall evening along the coast in East Sooke Park. Whatever happiness is, I'm sure this guy was feeling it.

Getting ready to go to Florida Keys again next week so this is what's on my mind. This is another catch from a fishing trip in a boat with friends. My wife and I go in their boat a couple times each winter, since you can catch more different varieties than from the bridge piers.

Raining today and spoiled our trolling fishing trip, so I will post a fish photo.

This is a blue tang..used in aquariums, but has to be handled with a glove. Look on the tail and they have a spike that comes out and when touched it flops it's tail and spikes you. Very painful and has a poisonous sting that is multiple times worse than bee stings and last a lot longer.

They are also poisonous to eat for humans.

Off the Strand with the Rock behind.

That's what he said when he walked into the room with the huge aquariums today at the new Manila Ocean Park :-)

We thought we'd go and see what the new park is like (it's only been open for a couple of weeks now). Had to do it on a weekday because we heard that the lines are horrendously long on the weekends.

The ocean animals are very pretty and the aquariums are nice, but there's still a lot of construction that needs to be done and barely any of the attractions are up yet.

The fish that changed history. The Atlantic Cod is in part responsible for the discovery and exploration of North America and had a tremendous impact on economic development of New England and eastern Canada.

Strangely, all illustrations of this superstar fish are mediocre at best. Well I hope this work of mine has changed that, and set the bar high. I completed this in 37 hours using colored pencils.

This photo is for fishermen who understand success while fishing.

This is two people's catch from a party boat in the Florida Keys that takes fishermen out in the ocean for a price to satisfy their fishing hobby.

My wife and I waited at the dock to see what they returned with to see if this is something we would like to do in the future.

Embracing the tranquility of the morning catch

Probably showed this little guy before, but they still fascinate with their fragile appearance. I caught this one a couple days ago on the bridge. They are a legal fish to keep and consume, but I didn't have the will power to do that. '

The fish is only about 1/2 inch thick and nearly transparent and popular for aquariums.

Yes, I placed this one back into the water after a couple photos.

If you are a avid fisherman there is no better feel than when a powerful fish is on the other end of your line.

While my wife and I were walking a different bridge to view fishermen there were two guys that hooked up with large fish at the same time. This one had a large pole and large reel, but at somme point the two lines crossed and both fish broke the fishermen's lines and got away,

Disappointed.......yes.....but that is fishing......it has happened to me a lot of times.

I have no idea what this person is fishing for, be he stayed at it for a while. Not even sure he caught anything, but in one photo the rod was bent a lot.

Taken in the shallows of the Atlantic Ocean near Marathon, Florida where we stay some in the winter months.

I have never tried this type of fishing but would love to learn if I had more patience.

At the time I rented a Canon 100-400 L lens and was wondering around Santa Cruz looking for good vantage points for a long zoom. Here, I am still at only 135mm :)

Taken right before sunrise in Santa Cruz, CA with the Walton lighthouse in the background. No filters or HDR used, 2 long exposures blend.

Ocean fishing for Stripers on the rocks of Maine's coast

Xiphactinus (Zih-FACK-tih-nuss) lived around 90 million years ago and grew to be 18 feet (6m) long. With its sharp teeth and hulking size, this fish was a voracious predator. One fossilized skeleton from Kansas had a six-foot (two-meter) fish fossilized inside it! That Xiphactinus may have choked to death on its struggling prey.

Fossil teeth and skull parts were found at Big Bend in rocks from the Boquillas Formation,
