Yesterday I was running early, so rather than catching the bus from the metro, I decided to walk the 1.2 miles to work. Everything was fine until I’d walked about a quarter of a mile. Then the sidewalks abruptly stopped being shoveled, and it was clear that the snowplows that had dealt with the street had just pushed everything on top of them. There is, in fact, a sidewalk underneath the muck and snow-rocks and fallen branches above, but you could be forgiven for not knowing that. Slugging through the snow and ice for almost a mile was an unexpectedly tough workout.
In better news, I now have a story to annoy my grandkids with.
“Why, in my day, we walked miles to work through snow and ice! We didn’t have those fancy hover-snowplows you kids have today! No sirree. We had to scramble over branches and pull our feet out of the snow and ice when they got stuck! You kids today. No appreciation.”

Get a front row seat to all the action by camping right on site! It is held at the beautiful Toutle River RV Resort just north of Castle Rock, WA. Their gorgeous grounds, heated pool, cedar saunas, and too many other amenities to list, will give you a place to prepare before the race, as well as a relaxing place to recover after the grueling race.
On the way home from school with the kids, I came across a bit of an obstacle in the road. Someone left a bit of machinery parked in my way and went home for the day.

Members of the Class of 2024 complete the First Year Orientation Program obstacle course at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, on September 18, 2020.
The obstacle course is an annual tradition at RMC to mark the entry of the first-year class in to Cadet Wing. It requires the newest officer cadets of the college to work as teams to overcome 12 challenges over a two-hour, 2.5-kilometre course across the historic peninsula on the shores of Lake Ontario. It is a course designed to test them physically and mentally, and prove their individual leadership qualities, and their cohesion as a team.

“There seemed to be endless obstacles... it seemed that the root cause of them all was fear.”
~ Joanne Field
“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.”
~ Abraham Lincoln
