Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) first year students compete in the obstacle course held throughout the RMC grounds on September 17, 2021. Each team is assessed as they race through 12 different obstacles with the best time at the end being declared the winner.
Cadets assigned to 3rd and 4th company of Cadet Field Training took to the Confidence Obstacle Course (COC) and the Bull Run Water Confidence Course for their training, July 6, West Point N.Y. Both obstacle course presented mental and physically demanding tasks that pushed each and every cadet to the next level. More than 1,500 cadets including 24 international cadets are working hand and hand during the four-week Cadet Field Training to become future military officers. I have been thinking for a while about a series, called "obstacles". It really stems from a personal necessity to show the way I have been perceiving things lately.
The way one feels being in a foreign place, where even the most trivial things are obstacles. The different language makes communications an obstacle: whereas before I could use the language in all its subtilities to convey a certain emotion, now words are hindering me from doing this.

Die Festung Fort von Cindey befindet sich im Rhônetal bei St. Maurice in den Alpen -
Alps im Kanton Wallis - Valais in der Schweiz

Warum eine Festung ?
***************************************************************************************************************

.
St-Maurice ist das Nordportal der Alpentransversale auf der direkten europäischen Durch-
gangsstrasse zwischen der F.ranche - C.ompté und dem P.iemont. Dies war auch der
Grund, dass dieser Ort militärisch gesehen immer wieder für Festungsbauten interessant
war.

Im Engnis bestand gegen Ende des 1.5. Jahrhunderts nur ein einfaches befestigtes
S.chloss. Später wurden die Festungen in die Höhe verlegt und waren immer tiefer
gestaffelt, bis sie im 20. Jahrhundert vom G.enfersee bis zum G.rossen S.ankt B.ernhard
und hinauf zum S.implon reichten.
Schlussendlich bestanden mehrere hundert Forts und Bunker, mit einer starken durch
Fels geschützten Artillerie. Mit S.argans im O.sten, dem S.ankt G.otthard im Z.entrum
und St-Maurice im W.esten war letztere eine der drei grossen Landesbefestigungen der
Schweiz.

Drei Generationen von Festungen im Engnis von St-Maurice

Das S.chloss von St-Maurice wurde ab 1.4.7.6 während der B.urgunderkriege in Etappen
gebaut, und lag, nachdem die O.berwalliser St-Maurice erobert hatten, an der Grenze zu
S.avoyen und B.ern.
.

.
1.8.3.1 unter dem Eindruck des Risikos eines europäischen Konflikts bereitete sich die
Schweiz darauf vor, die Verteidigung dieses Durchganges zu gewährleisten. Das Engnis
wurde mit Festungen verstärkt und gemäss den Plänen des künftigen Generals Henry
Dufour war vorgesehen, die B.rücke über die R.hone zu halten.

Das Fort Cindey wurde während des 2. Weltkrieges zwischen 1941 und 1946 erbaut. In
einem gewissen Sinne übernahm es die frühere Aufgabe des S.chlosses von St-Maurice
und der D.ufour - B.efestigung.
Cindey war Teil eines zusammenhängenden Festungskomplexes, bestehend aus den
grossen Forts von D.ailly, S.avatan und S.cex, welche ab 1.8.9.2 gebaut worden waren.

Der Festungsplaner hatte folgende Absicht: Zusammen mit den Forts S.avatan und
T.oveyre - P.etit M.ont auf dem rechten R.honeufer und den Abschnittstruppen, sollte
das Fort Cindey ein vordringen von N.orden nach St-Maurice verhindern und die
P.anzersperren, bestehend aus dem R.hone - K.anal und dem B.ach "Le C.ourset",
sowie die für die S.trassen und E.isenbahnlinien vorbereitete Sperren, verteidigen.

Cindey ist mit dem 1 km südlich gelegenen Fort S.cex durch eine natürliche G.rotte,
der sogenannten " G.rotte aux F.ées ", die durch einen künstlichen Tunnel erweitert
wurde, verbunden.
Das F.ort S.cex liefert dem Fort Cindey den elektrischen Strom und die Übermittlungs-
mittel.

Why is there a fortress here ?
***************************************************************************************************************

St-Maurice is the n.orthern portal of the principal alpine transit routes between the F.ranche-
C.ompté and the P.iemont. This determined the military importance of the place and the
constant interest of erecting fortifications there.
At the end of the 15th century there was only a simple fortified c.astle here.Subsequently
the fortifications were extended in height and depth until, in the 20th century, they stretched
from the L.ake of G.eneva to the G.reat St - B.ernard and S.implon passes.
Finally, several hundred forts and bunkers existed, with powerful artillery protected by the
rocks. With S.argans in the east and the G.otthard in the centre, St - Maurice in the west
was one of the three Swiss national fortresses.

The c.astle of St - Maurice was built in stages, during the Burgundy Wars, starting in
1.4.7.6, after St - Maurice, having been conquered by the 'Hauts-Valaisans' lay at the
border to S.avoy and B.ern.

In 1.8.3.1, under the threat of a possible new European conflict, Switzerland prepared to
defend the passage. Fortifications were built around it in order to defend the bridge over
the R.iver R.hone, according to the plans of the future General G-H D.ufour.
Fort Cindey was built during the Second World War, between 1941 and 1946. To a certain
extent it took over the former task of the St - Maurice C.astle and the D.ufour Fortress.
Cindey was part of a system of connecting fortifications, consisting notably of the larger
forts of D.ailly, S.avatan, S.cex, built from 1.8.9.2 onwards.

The planners' intention was that Cindey, together with the S.avatan, and forts T.oveyre-

Canal and the 'Le C.ourset' r.iver, as well as those obstacles prepared on the roads and
r.ailway l.ines.

Cindey is connected to the Fort of S.cex, situated 1 km further south, by a natural g.allery
called 'G.rotte aux F.ées' which is prolonged by an artificial gallery.
The Fort S.cex supplies Cindey with electricity and means of communication.
