President Ulysses S. Grant’s (Uly to his friends) Chocolate Oatmeal Stout is what this ale is all about!

Dark as the mines of Galena, this stout has a rich and creamy tanned head which leaves beautiful lacing in your glass as it is enjoyed. It's a full bodied ale with profound notes of chocolate and roasted malts which help to round out its flavor profile. Sweet coffee notes also linger on the palate to entice the next sip!

It took a bit of an up and down hike to get to this spot, but luckily, I pocketed this fabulous beer from Big Sky. After arriving at my perch, I enjoyed the Oatmeal Stout before the train rolled through. Here's the train after consumption: www.flickr.com/photos/tdanneman/15939179035/

De Súria. Session Pastry Stout. Aigua, malt d'ordi, flocs de civada, ordi i blat, llúpol, llevat, cacao, vainilla, cafè. 12 IBUs. 3,7%. Té un gust potent, un punt picant de la vainilla que la fa semblar més forta, amb més alcohol que el que té en realitat. Amb cos, densa, viscosa, sedosa. #PastryStout #OatmealStout #stout #ale #localbeer #craftbeer #cervesaartesana #cervesaartesanal #beer #pivo #birra #cervesa #cerveza #olut #øl #пиво #bière #beerporn #beergeek #beernerd #craftbeerlive #hophead #craftbeernotcrapbeer #craftbeerporn #craftbeerlover #beerstagram #beerpic

This is a bottle of John Thompson's Stout For Invalids. This bottle dates back to the 1880's - 1890's. While stout style beers are still made, they aren't being marketed as a health food or an elixir for hospital patients

Stouts used to be given to patients in hospitals, sanitariums and asylums. Stouts using oats as one of the primary ingredients were given to these patients due the lower alcohol contents and the belief that they were beneficial to the health of the patient. Many times they were handed out in the asylums just to help "Calm Down" problem patients.

I bought this bottle over 10 years ago. The only question I have ever had on the bottle is the meaning of "It'll send for the minister" I hope the beer wasn't so bad it would kill you.

Pre-Christmas Taste Fest.

These are beers or the world and winter brews, mostly purchased from World Market.

Many of these beers have a strong bitter hop flavor.

Most are not extraordinary , with two notable excepts.

The one that claims to be the most extraordinary - yuck!

And the Pumpkin Ale was very refreshing - I was pleasantly surprised.

Beers:

Samichlan bier, Spaten Munich Optimator, Dixie Lager Black Voodoo, Pyramid Snow Cap, Buffalo Bill's Brewery Pumpkin Ale, Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, Buffalo Bill's Brewery Blueberry Oatmeal Stout, Anderson Valley Big Sky Powder Hound, Boonville Beer Winter Solstice, Medocino Seasonal Imperial IPA Limited Edition, Full Sail Wassail, Mac's Blackwatch Porter, Dinkel Acker Dark (I like this one), He'Brew - "The Chosen Beer" Messiah Bold, New Belgium Sunshine, New Belgium 1554, Paulaner Hefe-Weizen.

The number of local breweries is rising by the minute. Particularly for beer you really do not have to look beyond the (Dutch) border anymore. Sorry, but Heineken, as many other big brands, taste like water from a ditch. They all have a tendency to sweeten their beers.

Amsterdam now has 19 small and micro breweries. The Hague has 8 and Rotterdam 4. Breweries like "De Kompaan" in The Hague and "Kaapse Brouwers" in Rotterdam, they do not brew traditional (sweetened) beers like blondes, radler's or triples. No Sir! I repeat: NO SIR! They produce proper beers, like Indian Pale Ales, tough red ale and vicious bitters. Or beers that have aged in old whiskey, cognac and wine barrels. Non-conformist and straight from the heart. Brewed with passion. Names like Kaapse Karel, Kaapse Koos, Vrijbuiter, Bondgenoot and Kameraad speak for themselves.

Each of these beers tells you an unique story while you drink it. No mantra as Heineken will do for you. So, why wait...go to Rotterdam or The Hague and have yourself a nice cold story! And blow the froth off a coupe... Cheers!

The Chandos, St Martin's Lane, London

We met up in London, and went to see English National Opera's extraordinary production of Philip Glass's Satyagraha. I can honestly say that it is one of the best things I have ever seen at the Coliseum in almost thirty years of opera-going. A sparse, symbolic production building as slowly and relentlessly as Glass's wonderful music. The reviews of it were stunning - here is the one in the Telegraph - but I am afraid we saw the final performance.

And then round the corner to the Chandos, which has somehow become our London local over the last thirty years, since before these children were born. It is the only central London pub of the Samuel Smith's brewery of Tadcaster in Yorkshire, and has determinedly retained the air of a city centre pub in York or Leeds. It sells only its own beers, and if the bar staff no longer have Yorkshire accents as they did when I first knew it, it still has its provincial air. All bare wood and tiles, there are no carpets here. Little duckets with a table in each let into the wide open bar, with Edwardian stained glass windows in each. If you climb the narrow stairs beyond the main entrance you come up into the Opera bar, one of central London's best-kept secrets, and there you really might be out in the provinces, with a pub food menu to match. It always comes as something of a surprise to step outside and see Trafalgar Square waiting.

You can read more about English National Opera's Satyagraha here.

The Chandos does not have its own website (of course) but this review at the Ultimate Pub Guide gives a pretty good idea of it.

I'm moping around after the disasterous election last night. I decided to go for a walk and to treat myself to a St Ambroise Oatmeal Stout.

The last time I had anything by McAuslan (St Ambroise) was 3 years ago in Quebec City. I found their beer tasty, quality and affordable. When I came back to Manitoba, I was hoping to find their beer here eventually - but that never happened.

I went to a rural Sask Liquor store on my birthday and low and behold, they had several cases of St Ambroise Oatmeal Stout, all covered in dust. I picked up two sixes as I've heard lots of raving about it. I'm glad to finally have a St Ambroise again after 3 years.

How was it?

Appearance: Very black colour, it's actually as black as the label on the beer bottle, if not darker. It has a VERY nice looking caramel coloured head.

Aroma: Reminds me of oatmeal, well that's in the name of the beer, isn't it? Perhaps there's a hint of chocolate.

Taste: Very dark. Has a roasted grains & hops taste that lingers on my tongue long after I've taken the sip. It's slightly sweet, slightly bitter and once in a while I'm reminded of oatmeal, but it's minimal. I enjoy it. Lastly, slightly smokey.. the closest stout I can compare this to is the Icelandic Lava Stout.

Tasty, but of course those who like Bud Light will not be able to handle this at all. If you like your stouts, like to try new beers, this is awesome! It is $14 for a 6 pack at some Sask Liquor Stores (it's mostly sold out) and it's 5% ABV.

Safe Harbour Oatmeal Stout

So, much like music and place, when I'm drawing and painting on my iPad/iPhone the stylus has to fit the mood. So when I'm travelling (ahem, sometimes not to a pub, honest) and painting on an iPad I tend to take Stylus T Frog with me. (He was born around World Skills Festival time and also travelled around London International Tech Show too).

Anyhow I've not found the perfect stylus, in as much as I'm fond of them all. I like the Alupen, the Pogo was the first I liked, the Pogo pro feels good to hold but, for the most part I like the Stylus Sock (just flows beautifully on the screen and especially good with the Brushes app), the Nomad compose (loads of fun to use and I definitely like the short hair version best - which is ironic considering my own particular barnet. Personally I find it best on the Art Rage app) and the Dagi 501, which sadly died recently so I'm on a Dagi 301 which I like a little less at the moment (too thin for my liking but I can imagine others like the size of the barrel. I liked the 501 more in that respect). The Dagi's bonkers, doesn't look like it should work but is great, very precise/nice to actually see the pixel placement and it works beautifully with Adobe Ideas. (Hint *for Christmas* hint.

Also have an eStylo on the way and VERY keen to try that one out.

A glass of BORIS The Crusher Oatmeal Stout from Hoppin' Frog Brewery in Akron, Ohio, served on draft at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012.

BORIS, short for Bodacious Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout, is a 9.4% abv imperial stout brewed with oatmeal. I've had it on bottle before but this was the first time on draft.

The beer poured pitch black with a brown head. It sported a lovely aroma of dark chocolate and coffee. The mouthfeel was full bodied with a silky smooth texture. Nice! The flavor started out with a caramel sweet note, dark chocolate and espresso coffee. It sported a nice bitterness, both from the hops and the roasted barley, which balanced the sweet malt and lingered in the long aftertaste.

This is a really well made, rich and tasty imperial stout. Love it!

[blog entry]

This building a few minutes from Wood Green Station, north London (you can see the road name) was clearly once an off licence. I thought so every time I passed it - then one day I went past to find that some rebuilding work had stripped away a more modern facia to reveal a board reading 'Hammerton' with 'Nut Brown Ale' on one side and 'Oatmeal Stout' on the other.

Update Jan 2011: - now all painted over.

Hammerton's brewery of Stockwell, London SW9, founded in 1730, was taken over by Watneys in 1951 - with 7 pubs and no less than 207 off licences!

For a while, back in probably the early 80's, Watneys, normally noted for brewing disgusting beer, actually brewed a beer they called Hammertons Porter. It was one of the best beers I've ever tasted! Needless to say it didn't last long...

Update 2018. The Hammerton brewery name is now beIng used by a north London based micro brewery.
