And the house is on fire and there's no alarm

And the walls are melting too

How about you?

'Til I got my invitation to the lunatic ball

And my friends are comin' too

How about you?

Don't worry, it's all just a symptom of being human"

The dog’s agenda is simple, fathomable, overt: I want. “I want to go out, come in, eat something, lie here, play with that, kiss you. There are no ulterior motives with a dog, no mind games, no second-guessing, no complicated negotiations or bargains, and no guilt trips or grudges if a request is denied.

― Caroline Knapp

This isn't my dog - I don't have any pets. I was photographing in a community garden, and this dog belonged to one of the gardeners. He stayed still long enough for one shot, gave me that look of "is that all you have?" before he got up wanting to have some fun.

This image was taken in the shade. I went and made it lighter.

Along the Cuiaba River high in a tree, we came upon a parrot. Normally I would have considered the bird to be too far away, but in the end, it was the only time throughout the trip the bird was seen.

The blue-fronted amazon (Amazona aestiva), also called the turquoise-fronted amazon and blue-fronted parrot, is a South American species of amazon parrot, the common name is derived from the distinctive blue marking on its head just above its beak.

There is no overt sexual dimorphism to the human eye, but analysis of the feathers using spectrometry, a method which allows the plumage to be seen as it would be by a parrot’s tetrachromatic vision, shows clear differences between the plumage of the sexes. Juveniles of parrots are duller and have dark irises.

The range of the blue-fronted amazon extends over eastern and northern Bolivia, eastern Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is found in forests (though generally avoids extensive humid forests such as the Amazon), woodland, savanna and palm groves. – Wikipedia

I'd like to think that more overt recognition and discussion of the manipulation which has always been inherent in photographic representation is healthy.

There are so many crazy stories of women who were burned alive after being called out for being a supposed witch. Did you know the last woman who was burned was said to be senile or suffering from a mental illness and was accused of being a witch because her daughter was born with deformed hands? The overtly religious townspeople claimed that the woman, Janet Horne, had turned her daughter into a pony and rode her to Satan to have her shod. I have to ask who the insane people were in this scenario ....and it doesn't seem to be Janet. These same people believed that witches, called Nightmares, would steal their horses in the middle of........

Krutitsy Metochion (Russian: Крути́цкое подворье), full name: Krutitsy Patriarchal Metochion (Russian: Крутицкое Патриаршее подворье) is an operating ecclesiastical estate of Russian Orthodox Church, located in Tagansky District of Moscow, Russia, 3 kilometers south-east from the Kremlin. The name Krutitsy (pl.), i.e. steep river banks, originally meant the hills immediately east from Yauza River. Krutitsy Metochion, established in the late 13th century, contains listed historical buildings erected in the late 17th century on the site of earlier 16th century foundations. After a brief period of prosperity in the 17th century, Krutitsy was shut down by imperial authorities in the 1780s, and served as a military warehouse for nearly two centuries. It was restored by Petr Baranovsky and gradually opened to the public after World War II; in 1991-1996, Krutitsy was returned to the Church and re-established as the personal metochion of Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia.

HistoryEdit

Foundation to prosperityEdit

After the Mongol invasion of Russia, in 1261, Russian Orthodox clergy established the Diocese of Sarai in the capital city of the Golden Horde, with an overt mission to serve the numerous Slavic population of Sarai (some Slavs were abducted by force, some joined the Mongol service voluntarily; Russian princes had to pay regular visits of homage to Sarai). Some Orthodox priests, both Greek and Russian, entertained an idea of converting the Mongols to Christianity and thus acquire political influence for the Muscovites. The Mongols were quite tolerant to Christian churches, and it is speculated that Genghis Khan's mother was a Nestorian. The new diocese was styled as Diocese of Sarai and Don

Prince Daniel of Moscow, appreciating the benefits of this alliance, donated to the diocese lands on Moscow River banks, strategically placed on the direct river route to Sarai, near the land road to Kolomna and Ryazan. In 1272, Diocese completed the first church on a new site. In the fifteenth century the Golden Horde disintegrated into several warring principalities, its Orthodox population dispersed, thus in 1454 the Diocese relocated to Moscow. Bishop Vassian lost his see, but acquired a new title - Bishop of Krutitsy, and retained the old one. In 1492 the new Diocese acquired its own territoried in lower Volga and Don areas; its bishops gained political influence and in 1589 acquired the style of Metropolitans of Krutitsy, Bishops of Sarai and Don.

During the Time of Troubles, when Kremlin Cathedrals were taken over by pretenders, Dormition Cathedral of Krutitsy was, temporarily, the main cathedral of Muscovy; despite later plundering by the Poles, loyalty to the winning party guaranteed further prosperity and influence in spiritual matters and politics. In the 1650s, Krutitsy was a site of bitter disputes between Patriarch Nikon and Old Believers (and, subsequently, a jail for the latter). The golden age of Krutitsy coincided with the rule of Metropolitan Paul II in 1664-1676. Paul II launched an ambitious construction program, building a new Dormition Cathedral, Metropolitan's Chamber, and an exquisite garden with Moscow's first fountain. Further improvements, notably the Gallery and Teremok, were completed by his successors.

DemiseEdit

In 1711, when emperor Peter I abolished patriarchy and subordinated the Church to State, Metropolitans of Krutitsy were downgraded to bishops (with an exception of revered Metropolitan Ignat Smola in 1719-1722). Soon, Krutitsy was hit by the fire of 1737; old wooden roofs burnt down and were replaced with tin, damaged frescoes simply whitewashed. In 1744-1751 the struggling abbey operated a seminary, and eventually lost this privilege too. In 1764 the state abolished the redundant Diocese of Saray and Don; in 1785, it abolished Diocese of Krutitsy and shut down the abbey, its relics and archives moved to Chudov Monastery.

Vacant property passed to the Imperial Military; Krutitsy became a military base. Dormition Cathedral burnt down in the Fire of Moscow (1812) to such extent that Alexander Tormasov, military governor of Moscow, ordered to demolish the remains and build barracks or stables instead. The order was cancelled after intervention of the clergy, when demolition was already underway. In 1817 the cathedral finally acquired a new roof; upper church opened in 1823.

In 1833, Krutitsy found a new sponsor - Grand Duke Alexander, future Alexander II. With all his influence, restoration by Konstantin Thon and Yevgraph Tyurin lasted for more than thirty years, to 1868. The military, however, retained most of the lands and Riverside Dormitory, and encircled the old abbey with a ring of new warehouses and barracks (still existing and operational today). These barracks also doubled as jail, handling prisoners like Alexander Herzen.

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Dormition Cathedral operated until 1924. Then, it was closed, looted, frescoes covered with oil paint. All land was again granted to the military. In 1936-1938, Resurrection church was rebuilt into barracks, the old cemetery levelled and converted to a football field. Diocese of Krutitsy was created again in 1920, then in 1947 merged with Diocese of Kolomna.

Ford (Ford Motor Company) is an American automobile company that manufactures cars under the Ford brand. The company is headquartered in Dearborn in the Detroit suburb of Michigan.

The company was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford, who created it after receiving $ 28,000 for business development from five investors. Ford became known as the world's first to use the classic car assembly line, first launched on August 16, 1913.

Henry Ford in 1914

The first model to receive mass recognition, produced by the company, was the Ford Model T, produced in 1908-1927.

In the late 1920s, an agreement was signed with the company with the leadership of the USSR for assistance in the construction of an automobile plant in Nizhny Novgorod. The first cars of the new Soviet automobile plant - GAZ-A and GAZ-AA, were licensed copies of Ford cars.

In the late 1930s, the company did not enjoy the trust of the American military due to the founder's overt pro-Nazi sympathies. In the 1930s, Ford built a production facility in Nazi Germany, which produced 12,000 tracked vehicles and 48,000 wheeled vehicles for the needs of the Wehrmacht. The head of the company was awarded the highest award of the Third Reich. Nevertheless, with the entry of the United States into World War II, the company began to produce army trucks and jeeps for the American troops (no longer of its own design - the Ford GPW was an adapted version of the Willys MB), acted as an alliance in the US tank building program.

In the mid-2000s, due to fierce competition in the global automotive market, Ford was experiencing a serious financial crisis. In 2006, Alan Mulally became president of the company, who sold the Aston Martin and Volvo Cars divisions, and successfully restructured it by launching a new One Ford strategy, which calls for Ford to gradually launch global vehicles common to all markets, bringing the company back to profitability.

These four Herons at the top of this Pine tree was a very strange occurrence. The Heron in the center is a Tri-colored Heron, and the other three are Snowy Egrets. I see them feeding in the same areas all the time, and they are amicable, but I've never seen any overt interactions. In this case however, the Tri-color Heron landed in in the pine and the Egrets flew by. Then they turned around one by one and proceeded to land in the order of the far right, closer right and finally far left. It was like some pre-determined ceremonial order. The strangest thing was in a drainage area at the foot of this pine there was another Tri-color Heron. Immediately upon the completion of the ceremony above the Tri-color Heron in the pond rapidly exited the area. Perhaps it is the Godfather Heron and some hired muscle to collect payment for a loan on some fish.

This spomenik at Podgarić, Croatia was built to commemorate the community's rebellion and uprising against Ustaše occupying forces in the greater Moslavina and Zagreb region during the National Liberation War (WWII), while also recognizing the support structures the village created to support the war effort.

The official public unveiling of the monument complex took place on September 7th, 1967 - a grand ceremony attended by hundreds of people, presided over and inaugurated by the President of Yugoslavia, Josip Tito. In fact, Tito appreciated the Podgarić monument so much that he later had the concept model for the monument installed in his Zagreb residence

The primary element of the spomenik complex is a large winged abstract sculpture, about 10m tall and 20m wide, with a central sphere-shaped 'eye' plated in aluminum panels. Along the approach pathway to this sculpture is a series of earthen mound crypts which houses the remains of the roughly 900 Partisans who perished at the site's nearby hospital

The primary intention of the monument was to represent the 'wings of victory' overcoming death and defeat, an overt allusion to the Partisan rebel's conquest over the invading Axis occupiers

The Basilica of Sant' Apollinare Nuovo is a basilica church in Ravenna, Italy. It was erected by the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great as his palace chapel during the first quarter of the 6th century (as attested to in the Liber Pontificalis). This Arian church was originally dedicated in 504 AD to "Christ the Redeemer"

It was reconsecrated in 561 AD, under the rule of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, under the new name "Sanctus Martinus in Coelo Aureo" ("Saint Martin in Golden Heaven"). Suppressing the Arian church, the church was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, a foe of Arianism. According to legend, Pope Gregory the Great ordered that the mosaics in the church be blackened, as their golden glory distracted worshipers from their prayers. The basilica was renamed again in 856 AD when relics of Saint Apollinaris were transferred from the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe because of the threat posed by frequent raids of pirates from the Adriatic Sea.

Its apse and atrium underwent modernization at various times, beginning in the 6th century with the destruction of mosaics whose themes were too overtly Arian or which expressed the king's glory, but the mosaics of the lateral walls, twenty-four columns with simplified Corinthian capitals, and an Ambo are preserved. On some columns, images of arms and hands can be seen, which are parts of figures once representing praying Goths and Theodoric's court, deleted in Byzantine times. Renovations (and alterations) were done to the mosaics in the mid-19th century by Felice Kibel. The present apse is a reconstruction after being damaged during World War

Question: Why does a man who purports to love the shadows so much constantly seem to be in the light? Even when the city's police call for him it's with a light in the sky -- Sure, Gotham is Batman's city; but he draws attention to the overtly dangerous and insane criminals - the ones with the same neurosis as his.

No, if you want to find answers to the important questions in Gotham, you can't swing from the rooftops, you got to work the shoe-leather on the streets.

The real danger's aren't the psycho's like the Joker; we all see him coming a mile a way. The real threat's always hidden in the more mundane. In the world of the faceless masses. Where better for a faceless detective to find the answers?

I was visiting the Big Island of Hawaii with some friends and family, and my brother convinced the group to take a lava tour by boat. I always kind of balk a little bit at overtly touristy stuff like that, but I think everyone was a pretty shocked when we got our first look at the Kalapana Lava Flow after about a half hour boat trip down the coast. It’s such an awesome, phantasmagorical sight and, since they actually get surprisingly close to the spots where the rivers of lava meet the ocean and throw up sulfurous steam clouds, also a pretty visceral sensory experience.

Caernarfon is architecturally one of the most impressive of all of the castles in Wales. It's defensive capabilities were not as overt or as powerful as those of Edward I's other castles such as Harlech and Beaumaris (which indicate the pinnacle of castle building and defences in Britain), but Caernarfon was instead intended as a seat of power - and as a symbol of English dominance over the subdued Welsh.

Caernarfon is located at the southern end of the Menai Strait between mainland north Wales and Anglesey, 8 miles south west of Bangor. During Edward I's invasions of Wales, this was strategically an excellent place to build a castle; Anglesey was referred to as the garden of Wales, providing agriculturally rich land close to the poorer land on north Wales. The Menai Strait also allowed speedy access between the north Welsh coast and the western coast, and was therefore important for Edward to control for supplying outposts such as Harlech and Aberystwyth.

Persian buttercups (Ranunculus asiaticus) is a perennial plant that can grow to be a foot and a half tall.

They have blooms that resemble roses.

Some species are popular ornamental flowers in horticulture, with many cultivars selected for large and brightly coloured flowers.

Here mixed with some dwarf Daffodils, yellow with orange trumpets.

What got me 'in' to 'flower-photography', was that I wanted to know more about lighting...

That was 28 years ago, flowers seemed the perfect subject matter, because of their different colours, shapes, textures, great variety and 'characters', I'd had many a garden, grown my own, so, I started out with an advantage, I knew about flowers...

I found a niche in the market, for overt 15 years now people have been 'raving' about them, asking me how I 'do' it?

There is NO magic formula, each flower is unique and treated as such! I do NOT consider myself a 'flower-photographer' but a photographer who knows how to use lighting well...

Letana sp, Family: Tettigoniidae

The Phaneropterinae (False katydid) are a subfamily of katydids belonging to the family Tettigoniidae. Nearly 2060 species in 85 genera throughout the world are known. They are among the largest winged katydids.

Their legs vary from genus to genus, but the front and middle ones are always much shorter than the hind ones. The ovipositor and male genitalia are also variable depending on the genus.

These katydids are arboreal in habitat with the vast majority of them passing their lives in shrubs and trees, feeding on leaves and tender twigs with a potential for causing much damage when present in large numbers. This is rare, however, as they live a solitary life unlike meadow grasshoppers, thus are seldom noticed by man.

The Phaneropterinae differ from locusts in their habits of oviposition. Their eggs are rarely deposited in the earth or twigs, but are either glued fast in double rows to the outer surface of slender twigs or are inserted in the edges of leaves.

There is really nothing overtly “false” about False kaydids — entomologists simply refer to them this way in order to distinguish them from the true katydids (subfamily: Pseudophyllinae). Also, the rapid “tic-tic-tic-tic” sound of a male false katydid is unlike the more traditional katydid call of “katy-did, katy-did". The false katydids are more slender and have longer wings than true katydids.

Footprints lead into the sand dune landscape.

Most of the landscape photographs that many of us make try to present the landscape without obvious human presence. I write “obvious” because it is hard to find any place where no human effects are present. Sometimes photographers are critiqued for presenting the illusion that this isn’t so, but while I think the point is important the criticism is unwarranted and based on its own untenable notion of what wilderness is. In any case, the inclusion of a more overt human element can encourage us to think of these places in a different way.

We often try to photograph dunes after sand storms, when footprints have been erased. But including such things can also engage us in the landscape in useful ways. The footprints here are somewhat subtle, but I think that we relate to the scene differently when we see a line of footprints entering it.

The Luna Park has been set up and is now ready to welcome visitors.

One of the many treasures of the Lady Lever Museum in Port Sunlight, Wirral. Each time I visit I admire (and photograph) this small sculpture.

It is known as Deidre but more properly titled Third Portrait of Deirdre (Leaning Forward). A bronze sculpture with green patina (oxidized film), it is a study of the Epsteins’ housekeeper and cook who worked for them from 1939 until she joined the War Office in 1942. Described as ‘exceptionally pretty,’ she subsequently emigrated to Australia following her marriage. The artist’s previous iterations on his subject date from 1941-42 and are known as First Portrait of Deirdre (with Arms) and Second Portrait of Deirdre (in a Slip).

Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) is credited as a pioneer of modernist sculpture and was an influence on Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. His work nevertheless drew criticism, often anti-Semitic, for its overtly sexual imagery and for abandoning Classical models. Regularly making portraits of those he knew, or even of strangers, Epstein is perhaps best known for Rock Drill (1913-15) and as the sculptor of the ‘infamous’ grave monument to Oscar Wilde at Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris.

The 2nd in a small series taking a 'straight shot' of a Cabbagetown Fence and digitally manipulating the image with colour treatments and effects. The effects are done is such as way as to maintain the incredible detailing of the old wood and the crumbling, poorly-done paint job.

Again, this image got me thinking about the work of Barnett Newman and his epic-sized horizontal paintings with their vertical "zips". Here the colour scheme seems to suggest a vague connection with his painting, "Cathedra". While not trying to overtly create a Newman, I am letting his influence flow through and inform my work. Good old Barney would not have liked all this detail and colour play !!!!!

This is from last night. Because I HATE standing around waiting for the train, I did a ton of walking today for errands (about 8-9 miles) and didn't feel like going out.

Tomorrow the weather promises fog during the day - which we NEVER get around here - so the Mamiya 645 and 6x9s are loaded and ready.

I learned recently that the Short Hills Mall (if you've ever read a Judy Blume novel you know the town, and the ones around it - upper middle class Jersey) has a photo gallery. And ... they accept portfolio submissions. The stuff they sell seems kinda commercial, but it's possible the more overtly "pretty" Houses At Night pictures might work for them.

Which would make the Thomas Kincaid jokes hit REALLY close to home. I'll do a scouting trip soon and report back.....

Personally, I find the idea of people buying my work at a mall store deeply, powerfully, subversive. I hope Mr Socks is around to see it....

One of the antagonists in Vampire: The Requiem, Belial's Brood are a loose confederation of reckless and raucous vampiric Satanists, demon-worshippers, and overt miscreants, who exalt in the spread of misery and pain. The Brood claims and preaches that the Damned originate from Hell itself and are demons made flesh who should follow the whims of the Beast. They are one of the two "enemy only" covenants in the core rulebook, the other being VII.

They are intended to be more straightforward enemies than other antagonists that might be fought against in Requiem, as their goals (spreading wanton misery and violence, heedless of whether or not they expose the existence of vampires) are antithetical to nearly any character. LOVE Park in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its officially named John F. Kennedy Plaza but everyone calls it LOVE Park because of the iconic sculpture by Robert Indiana.

More than you want to know:

JFK Plaza was designed in 1965 by the actor Kevin Bacon's father who was a local urban planner and architect. The LOVE statue was installed in 1976 for the bicentennial celebration and was so popular it became a permanent installation. The name Philadelphia is Greek for brother love - that's why the place is called 'the city of brotherly love' and why a Love statue was placed on this spot.

It's kind of a spicy urban location at night with skateboarders a plenty and also a little sad to meet so many panhandlers, homeless and overtly muddled people in a park called Love.
