this is the "New Palais" in Potsdam near the campus square of university. On a tuesday it is closed, so there were not thousends of people.

Oversized Load - Male Osprey bringing in some eucalyptus bark to the female in the nest. I have never observed this behavior before and it was interesting to see the Osprey scraping some loose bark off the tree and bringing it back to the nest. I wonder if it just serves the purpose of nesting material, or if the Osprey is intentionally bringing in this particular bark for the oils which may have some anti-parasitic properties. In any case, it was a treat to watch this comical sight of the Osprey lugging a bundle of bark. He even dropped a piece of the bark in the river and in his determination, actually came back after dropping off the rest, dived down to grab the little piece and returned it to the nest. I got many interesting images on this particular afternoon and will share the rest of the sequence in the coming weeks.

The Toco toucan is at home in South America's tropical forests but recognized everywhere. The toucan's oversized, colorful bill has made it one of the world's most popular birds.
The 7.5-inch-long (19-centimeter-long) bill may be seen as a desirable mating trait, but if so, it is one that both male and female toucans possess. In fact, both sexes use their bills to catch tasty morsels and pitch them to one another during a mating ritual fruit toss.
As a weapon, the bill is a bit more show than substance. It is a honeycomb of bone that actually contains a lot of air. While its size may deter predators, it is of little use in combating them.
In addition to fruit, Toco toucans eat insects and, sometimes, young birds, eggs, or lizards.
Toco toucans live in small flocks of about six birds. Toucans nest in tree holes.
Their bright colors actually provide good camouflage in the dappled light of the rain forest canopy. However, the birds commonly keep up a racket of vocalization, which suggests that they are not trying to remain hidden.
Indigenous peoples regard the bird with a more sacred eye; they are traditionally seen as conduits between the worlds of the living and the spirits.

SM31-025 with a train from Wrocław is entering Kościerzyna on its way to Gdynia. Once again I was lucky enough to witness this train during my stay up north. This time it was taken up by one of the few running SM31 locomotives.

Getting an oversized tyre off a Triumph rim was a "pig" of a job.
It will handle better with the correct size tyre fitted.

SM31-025 is making its way out of the station Kościerzyna on the old coal mainline, at a snail's pace. On hook - the standard heavy power generator train from Wrocław to the harbour in Gdynia.
This train runs roughly once a month or so, sometimes with longer breaks, and is one of the last regular trains using the old unelectrified railway line 201, about which I once made a series of posts under the name 'The Polish coal-mainline'.

I'm posting two shots today. One a series and the other a close-up.
I'm always looking for ways to identify one eagle from another to see if they are returning year after year. This guy sure is easy to ID.
He seems to have a talon that doesn't quite work right and is longer than the rest. Maybe why he dropped the fish the first time around.
It took him two tries but he was successful.
Best in large to see his talon.
Near Stevensville, Montana, the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge offers splendid scenics, excellent hiking and a robust birding environment to satisfy any nature lover.
Since it is only about 20 minutes from my home, I make my way over to the wetlands frequently, as I did on this beautiful winter afternoon, with the oversized, diffused sun about to set behind the Bitterroot Mountains in western Montana's beautiful Bitterroot Valley.
