It's not easy to overcome the inertia of driving a car, of transporting yourself from A to B. It's not uncommon for a great photo opportunity to emerge somewhere along the way. Sometimes I have the presence of mind to stop immediately to capture the moment. Other times I hesitate in my thinking while the car hurtles along at a mile a minute, taking me away from the scene. And the farther I go, the more difficult it becomes to turn back. Anyway on this fine day, my reaction to these clouds was immediate. I stopped, grabbed the camera and bounded up to a perfect vantage point. I was taken by the cloud formation and how it seemed to undulate in response to the contours of the earth beneath. Almost as if there was some invisible connection. As I stood here in the brilliant light, looking up the slope, my mind flashed back to me as a young child. In this vision, I was hurtling down a snow covered hill much like this one, riding a tiny aluminum saucer. These saucers were intended expressly for coasting, but in retrospect seemed to put the rider in great peril. There was no steering or braking. One simply hopped on, shoved off, and hoped for the best. Totally thrilling as a child, despite numerous rollovers and encounters with trees and rocks. I wonder if those little saucers are still being manufactured, or if the cost of liability insurance and litigation brought about their demise. Or perhaps lack of interest. I rarely see anyone coasting these days. I think my little saucer epitomized the simpler times of my youth.

This is my Photo-Heart Connection of June. I had not to think very much because the only photos I have taken along the whole month have been a series of these cherries
The day after I finished checking the paper of my students and once I uploaded their marks, I took my camera. Only a few weeks had passed without taking a single photo, even so, it was like a foreign object in my hand that I didn´t know how to handle. I felt sad and tempted to let it aside, but I had the feeling that this could create a breach, a rupture (...)

Last weekend was a rainy, windy and cold one which of course makes for cool photos especially in a backless dress 😉 I scrambled up the wet rocks trying not to slip and doing my best to not look pained from the cold 😯 my fingers hurt so badly from the cold that I was like I'm never doing that again 😨😲 but who am I kidding I'll always jump at the chance of a good photo opportunity 📷

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”
We looked at the Lackey,* and saw that those shameless souls hire themselves out to do whatever menial task, or take whatever position of assured destruction they're placed in.
The thug, in contrast, rather than groveling for their imagined dues, are motivated by a perverse pride in which they assume they have all might, and all intellect, to take all that they desire.
Both are hopelessly out of touch with reality.
While the lackey futilely dreams of a rise in the ranks, the thug, in an equally vain measure, imagines themselves on an upward trajectory through their own inherent abilities.
The word "thug" ultimately comes from the Hindi word thag, meaning "rogue," "thief," or "cheat." This, in turn, is derived from the Sanskrit word sthaga, meaning "scoundrel," which comes from the verb sthagati, "to conceal."
During the British colonial period in India, the term "Thug" (often capitalized) was used to refer to members of a network of criminal gangs known as Thuggee. These groups were professional robbers and murderers who preyed on travelers, often by strangulation, sometimes in the name of the goddess Kali.
The word "thug" entered the English language in the early 1800s, directly from Hindi, to describe these Indian criminals. The earliest recorded use in English is around 1810.
By 1839, the meaning of "thug" broadened in English to refer generally to a "ruffian, cutthroat, or violent lowbrow." It became a general term for a violent, aggressive, or lawless person.
This is the modern thug. Excessively assured of their own might. Persistently proceeding under a mental 'plan' that does not include much past their next 'score'. Never worried, but always self-assured in their own personal merits that they can overcome anything and anyone.
Until the day, usually quick in coming, that they either lead themselves into a fatal fall of their own foolishness or, in the world of comics, the bone crushing fist of a super-hero.
While there is some pleasure in seeing them fall due to the circumstances of their own making, the two-fisted justice of super-heroes raining violence upon the thug is more immediate and satisfying.
Whatever the thug had thought of their own brute strength is revealed to be nothing more than a gnat in the face of a hurricane. Thinking themselves a shark amongst guppies, they suddenly, painfully, find themselves a minnow in a maelstrom.
The irony sits well, as the thug has invariably spent their lives subjugating those who were weaker and suddenly finds themselves as impossibly weak before the caped justice of spandex and icons.
But, like the lackey, no matter how many thugs are pulverized under the colorful superhuman might of heroes, more will quickly take their place.
Which just makes for good comics!

One of the things I really like about shooting the sand dunes is when it becomes so dark you can barely see what you're doing. At the same time I love playing with the white balance as it picks up the colors of the late evening light. Pinks, blues, purples, and then it's just fun getting artistic when processing. This is one of those shots where I enjoyed getting creative with the light.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time for a look!

Just a week ago Ruger was afraid to cross the stream in our backyard but I'd say he's overcome his fear. Today, he had a blast running in the mud, finding new sticks to chew on, and climbing all over the slippery rocks by the waterfall. If that's not a look of happiness, I don't know what is!
Even in broad daylight abandoned vessels give me the willies. I was able to overcome my fear long enough to capture a few images of the ominous hulk of the ghost ship Joker in Willapa Harbor. While I was there I was sure that the slippery dock was going to send me tumbling into the dark waters by the ruined hull or that the mooring lines would coil around me like the filaments of spider web.
Abandoned vessels are a problem in the waterways of Washington state. Michael A. Schueler described the situation in his article 'A Sinking Feeling: The Problem of Abandoned Boats in Washington Waterways." Seattle Journal of Environmental Law Vol. 4 : Iss. 1, Article 8. Available at: digitalcommons.law.seattleu.edu/sjel/vol4/iss1/8
Schueler wrote:
In 2012, the Deep Sea, a 128-foot vessel known to be derelict, was moved to Penn Cove, Washington, and left to rot near vulnerable oyster beds.
After a few days, the Deep Sea caught fire and sunk, causing significant damage to local wildlife and the local economy, and costing the state millions to cleanup.
The Deep Sea is one of hundreds of boats that have been abandoned in Washington waters and though the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is making some progress in removing derelict and abandoned boats from Washington’s waterways, the progress is slow and cannot keep up with the need, due in no small part to the amount of abandoned boats and the Department’s budget constraints.
Between 2012 and 2014 there has continuously been over one
hundred boats left abandoned or derelict in Washington waters. Should any of these boats sink, these vessels all pose significant environmental risks, due to contaminants commonly found on ships, including excess fuel, lead paint, and asbestos.
Between January 2012 and November 2012, the state removed 23 of the 226 vessels listed on the DNR’s list of abandoned and derelict vessels. In this same time period, however, 18 vessels were added to the DNR’s list. As of publication, 153 vessels are still on the DNR’s list, including numerous ships over 100 feet in length.
The DNR’s Derelict Vessel Removal Program operates on a scant $750,000 budget each year.
Dismantling even one large vessel can cost more than the entire budget. Small fishing ships, among the cheapest of vessels to remove, can still cost between $5,000 and $10,0005 to remove, with one recently costing $7,600 in Gig Harbor.
Assuming each boat’s removal cost is as little as $7,600, the DNR would be able to remove less than 100 vessels a year—less than two-thirds of the currently maintained list of derelict and abandoned ships. However, many abandoned or derelict ships in Washington that are far larger than small fishing vessels and are far costlier remove. Compounding this problem further, many boats removed from the list end up back on the list for a second or third time.
With this budgetary limitation, the DNR will be unable to remove
the existing boats this season, or keep up with the ships added to the list this year, digging the state into a deeper hole and adding additional liability to Washington's economy and environment.
Many of the ships on the DNR’s list are “large vessels” containing
pollutants that can cause significant environmental damage and require significant funding to properly cleanup.
During a flyover of the Columbia River to look into the growing problem of abandoned and derelict vessels, then Governors Gregoire of Washington and Kitzhaber of Oregon noted approximately 40 vessels on the Columbia River between Washington and Oregon.
Of these vessels at least half fall into the category of large ships, “between 100 and 181 feet long.” One of these vessels, the LST-1166 is 373 feet long and would likely require “legislative action” to remove.
Many of these boats contain large amounts of fuel and other environmental pollutants including PCBs, copper wiring, lead paint and asbestos insulation. These pollutants can
cause significant environmental damage if released into the environment and also can cost the state millions in cleanup costs.
For example, the cleanup of the Crocket in 2011 cost the state nearly $24 million in removal and cleanup costs when it was broken apart.
Given its current budget constraints, Washington cannot endure cleanup costs similar to this, especially considering that there may be 20 or more ships that could cost this much. There will likely be more boats abandoned in the coming year as the recession continues, increasing the likelihood of further environmental damage.
As more and more of these ships continue to fall into derelict status and are abandoned, Washington takes a huge gamble in letting these ships sink. Each large ship left unattended could cost the state tens of millions of dollars and poses significant environmental risks to local waterways and wildlife should the vessel sink.

Help Chile Overcome the Earthquake Chile stepped up efforts to find survivors of an earthquake registering 8.8 magnitude that struck before dawn yesterday, killing more than 700 people, severing the country’s main highway and damaging 1.5 million homes.
The eartquake was centered 200 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of Santiago near the main winemaking region and close to Concepcion, a metropolitan region of more than 500,000 people. Highways and airports were shut by damage and some copper mines closed. The total economic damage may be as much as $30 billion, or about 15 percent of the South American country’s gross domestic product, according to estimates by disaster- scenario modeler Eqecat Inc.
We need your help to overcome the earthquake.
