Heading for Washigton to be displayed at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, this was the final piggy back ride for Discovery atop of Nasa's modified B747.

This week in 2011, space shuttle Discovery lifted-off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center for its 39th and final mission. Discovery and its six-member crew delivered the Leonardo Multipurpose Logistics Module -- packed with supplies, critical spare parts and Robonaut 2 -- to the International Space Station. The first shuttle mission launched in April 1981, and for the next 30 years the program’s five spacecraft carried people into orbit repeatedly, launched, recovered and repaired satellites, conducted cutting-edge research and built the largest structure in space, the space station.

 

Today, Marshall's Payload Operations Integration Center serves as "science central" for the space station, working 24/7, 365 days a year in support of the orbiting laboratory's scientific experiments.

Developed in the 1970s by the Marshall Space Flight Center, the space shuttle main engine was the world's most sophisticated reusable rocket engine. After the solid rocket boosters were jettisoned, the main engines provided thrust which accelerated the shuttle from 3,000 mph to more than 17,000 mph in order to reach low earth orbit. The engines operated for 8 minutes and 40 seconds for each shuttle flight, with a combined output of 37 million horsepower, and a combined maximum thrust of more than 1.2 million pounds.

STS-26 Discovery, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 103, rises into a cloudy sky and heads for Earth orbit atop the external tank (ET) as exhaust plumes billow from the two solid rocket boosters (SRBs) during liftoff from Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex (LC) pad 39B. A few minutes to kill this morning in Virginia gave me the opportunity to visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum attached to Dulles Airport.

Based on information I gleaned while posting the linked photo, this is OV-103 some time between November 6 & 8, 1983, while at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB). Discovery arrived there November 6 from Edwards Air Force Base (EAFB) and departed November 8, 1983, enroute to Carswell Air Force Base as part of her delivery to KSC on November 9, 1983.

 

In this well-composed & rare photo, the Orbiter/Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) combination is seen at the Orbiter Lifting Fixture (OLF), a scaled-down version of the Mate-Demate Device (MDD) used at EAFB. At the time, NASA and the Department of Defense planned to fly space shuttles, with Discovery as the designated orbiter, from Vandenberg’s Space Launch Complex-6 (SLC-6) on military polar orbital missions, beginning with STS-62A in 1986.

Note the white color of the SCA, with a single blue stripe. The original American Airlines livery was repainted to this before flying to the May 1983 Paris Air Show.

I think that’s the red Ingersoll-Rand logo on the side of the pushback tractor.

Lastly, the kinda softish Airman in the lower left foreground, possibly on a walkie-talkie. I hope he wasn’t providing physical security.

STS-41 Discovery, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 103, lifts off from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex (LC) Pad 39 mobile launcher platform at 7:47 am (Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)). OV-103 riding atop the external tank (ET) and flanked by two solid rocket boosters (SRBs), is captured just moments after liftoff. Not yet clear of the fixed service structure (FSS) tower, OV-103 is highlighted against the cloudless morning sky. Exhaust smoke billows from the SRBs and the space shuttle main engines (SSMEs) creating a cloud over the launch pad area.

Space Shuttle Discovery sits in the Space Hanger of the Air & Space Museum in Chantilly Virginia. Previously, the original Shuttle Enterprise sat in this spot, but after Discovery's retirement in 2011, it was decided to display Discovery here, and to move the Enterprise to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City in 2012. I've seen both shuttles in this spot, and I must say, seeing Discovery takes the cake, since it's easily recognized that this shuttle flew to space many times. There are marks, scorches, and wear and tear visible on Discovery that came after 39 flights to and from space. If you've not been to this museum, you need to make time and make it happen!

This is a close-up view of the forward port-side reaction control system (RCS) on the Space Shuttle Discovery.

 

Each RCS (two forward and two aft) consists of high-pressure gaseous helium storage tanks, pressure regulation and relief systems, a fuel and oxidiser tank, a system that distributes propellant to its engines, and thermal control systems (electrical heaters). They provide the thrust for attitude (rotational) manoeuvres (pitch, yaw and roll) and for small velocity changes along the orbiter axis (translation manoeuvres).

 

Around them you can see some of the multitude of individually-labelled differently sized and shaped tiles giving the Shuttle its thermal protection, so necessary for successful re-entries into the atmosphere.

 

I was lucky enough to turn up (by accident) at the Udvar-Hazy Center on the day that Discovery was first unveiled to the public.
