Factory Butte is a striking, cathedral-like sandstone peak in south central Utah, surrounded by a barren moonscape of grey shale formations known as the Upper Blue Hills. It was named Factory Butte in the late 1800’s by pioneer settlers who thought its outline resembled the Provo Woolen Mill. The surrounding landscape is equally otherworldly. It feels as though you’re exploring another planet, and for good reason; if you go, you’re likely to be the only one there.

In 1911, the Old Elbe Tunnel was built to provide a more direct route for dock workers over to the southern banks of the Elbe river from the Landungsbrücken piers in St. Pauli. A technical innovation at the time of its construction, the tunnel became a tourist attraction when the 'new' Elbtunnel and several bridges were built in the 1970s. Now pedestrians and bicyclists wishing to cross below the river can ride a free lift into the deep, and cars can use hydraulically driven cages for a small fee.

Explore the southern banks

The green dome at the Landungsbrücken points towards the 426 metres long underpass. The tunnel is used by city-dwellers to explore the remote corners of the port area or to get to Wilhelmsburg or Altes Land. The observation platform south of the river is also held in high regard among tourists and locals alike for its magnificent panoramic views of the city.

A historic site

Modern tunnels can’t compare to the Alter Elbtunnel, which has been a preserved historic site since 2003. The lamps symmetrically lining the arched tunnel walls create an otherworldly yet cosy atmosphere 24 metres below the river’s surface. The Alter Elbtunnel’s Art-Deco beauty, combined with the unique reliefs lining the bricked walls, make this attraction particularly popular with photographers.

Meandering through the sea stacks in that otherworldly place known as Bandon, Oregon…

Have a great week ahead my friends!

While visiting Zion National Park for the first time, we took advantage of an opportunity to see Bryce Canyon under snow on New Year's Day 2020.

As seen here, the cloud cover was pretty significant in southern Utah, and Zion was socked in, so we decided to see the snow covered hoodoos at Bryce a mere two hour drive away. My personal favorite park is Bryce Canyon because of its otherworldly imagery, and this visit under a considerable amount of snow confirmed its position. Stunning visuals, relatively unpopulated trails and vistas, and easy access, made this a very worthwhile visit to start the new year off right!

The Karl G. Jansky Very large Array (VLA) is a radio astronomy observatory located on the Plains of San Agustin, about 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. It comprises 27 25-meter radio telescopes in a Y-shaped array.

I took this shot as part of a night photography workshop offered in connection with the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge Festival of Cranes (www.festivalofthecranes.com/), which was held November 17-22. It was a great workshop, and I met photographers from all over the world.

The workshop was run by professional photographer Roman Kurywczak (www.roaminwithroman.com), a great guy and a terrific photographer. If you have not visited the VLA, put it on your list. It is otherworldly! The VLA was featured in the 1997 movie, Contact.

Bryce Canyon is such a unique place. The climate at this elevation causes constant erosion, with the extreme temperature swings, intense precipitation events and resultant frost-wedging cause these otherworldly formations.

The clear blue skies and thin, crisp air add an incredible luster to every image with stark contrast against the pink and orange rock in the canyons and amphitheaters.

I've visited close to 30 National Parks, and an untold number of beautiful places in the United States and around the world. Nothing compares to Southern Utah, and Bryce Canyon is THE crown jewel.

I've been to some beautiful places, but I must say that I was completely stunned at how consistently beautiful Sedona is.

Despite the fact that the city is built within these amazing geologic formations, and the area can become crowded with tourists, the natural beauty is pristine, the colors otherworldly, and the access unsurpassed.

If you are thinking about places to visit and Sedona isn't on your list, perhaps it's time to rethink your list.

In a city surrounded by dramatic terrain, Moon Valley is a showpiece of the region. Tall, tan-coloured pinnacles rise up from the eroded hillside, creating a maze of otherworldly geological formations.

Arches National Park in Moab, Utah is full of unique and photogenic geologic formations. Beyond the park's namesake formations, there are several reefs, buttes, balanced rocks, and otherworldly sights.

This rock. precariously balanced on a spire atop one of the reefs along the main park road is not, to my knowledge, a named formation, but it is approximately a half-mile from the three closely grouped spires known as the gossips. To my eye, this formation has the appearance of a proper, though somewhat stiff, woman looking off into the distance as if annoyed by the gossipy sisters down the road.

The second park I visited (though my day in Canyonlands National Park was photographically tangential at best) among Utah's vaunted Mighty 5 National Parks, Arches is the spot that spurred my interest in travel and landscape photography. If you get the opportunity to visit Moab, I absolutely recommend several days here.

Joshua tree has long, fascinated the scientific world as well as just a regular folks blown away by the Majestic beauty of the oddly formed rocks, and the Joshua trees and the energy of the land. Geologist believe the face of the landscape was born more than.100 million years ago. Molten liquid heated by. The continual movement of the Earths crust oozed upward and cooled well still below the earths surface. These plutonic intrusions. Are a giant rock. Called monzogranite. A cult like following believes created Joshua tree. Many have claimed to see UFOs and try to film them.

Thais abstract scene was not taken on the surface of Mars. It is one of the geothermal basins in Yellowstone National Park.

Hot! Hot! Hot! ...and pure, but if one looks close we see the remains of human life with a piece of litter that must of blown out over the spring mineral water.

It was nearing the end of the dry season when I visited Jawai Wildlife Reserve. The monsoon season would soon arrive. The muted landscape fascinated me. The Indian Coral trees were in bloom rendering a a striking contrast. Nature never ceases to amaze.

There are several kinds of 'Kappas', also in origami land, like this one, holding an leaf as protection against the sun? ;-))

I found an explanation on internet about these "Otherworldly Creatures"; it's up to you if you believe it or not ;-)

~~~~There are also those who believe that the Kappa could be a type of alien creature that somehow found its way to Earth. Many who have faith in this argument also believe that other mythological sea creatures inhabit Earth in the uncharted areas of the sea.
Their argument? These strange sea aliens are able to travel to and from the Earth through portals – which may explain why we’ve never been able to prove their existence. They claim that these portals come in the form of mysterious whirlpools. Admittedly, whirlpools and strong water currents are one of the most common descriptions that arise in mythology speaking of the appearance of these strange creatures.
Additionally, many scholars point out that several ancient cultures speak of sea creatures who are documented to have ‘fallen from the sky.’ Many of these creatures, gods, and goddesses are also said to have immediately submerged themselves in a body of water as soon as they arrived and are also credited with teaching human beings religion, culture, and medicine.
Likewise, the early Kappa are known as friendly helpers who worked to teach humans important medical practices such as bone setting.~~~~
"This natural water feature is in the confluence of the Blyde River and the Treur River; thousands of years of water erosion have created a unique and otherworldly geological feature.
Here at the mouth of the Blyde River Canyon, the two rivers formed swirling eddies of water. Over time, this formed huge cylindrical potholes in the sandstone bedrock. The effect, seen from the crags above, is now a fascinating network of tunnels and tubes and interconnected whirling pools. The different soil levels in each hole give them each a unique color and makes for a striking and colorful landscape."
From the mists of legend, majestic white spires group out of craggy mossy cliffs in a mix of elven architecture and organic flow, surrounded by gentle cascades of otherworldly vegetation and serene contemplation terraces.
Wistman's Wood is an ancient forest of dwarf oak trees in the valley of the West Dart River just north of Two Bridges, Dartmoor. It is one of the highest oak woodlands in the UK, at 380-410m altitude. The woodland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and forms part of a national nature reserve.
Quite apart from its importance as an outstanding natural environment, Wistman's Wood is famous for its bizarrely shaped, twisted, gnarled trees, covered in layers of moss and lichens and standing amidst a tumbled area of granite boulders.
The result is otherworldly, like something out of a dark fantasy world. The oak branches are contorted, warped, and tangled. They stretch out horizontally, rather than vertically.
What a wonderful evening that one was! The mountain is Dude Benchmark.
Established in 1964, Canyonlands National Park preserves 527 square miles (1364 square kilometers) of colorful landscape that has eroded into countless canyons, mesas, arches, and buttes. The natural sculpting has created these amazing vistas, giving it this otherworldly appearance.
The strange and beautiful landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park are at times otherworldly. Just up the rocks from the Jumbo Campground is this fascinating little area.
Another shot from the narrows, which was my favorite part of my trip to Zion last winter. This was a really breathtaking hike and to think we almost skipped it! This image is from a ways into the canyon. As the walls close in on you, the light level goes down but if you're there at the right time of day, you can see the glow of the afternoon sun illuminating the canyon walls in front of you for some truly otherworldly light. If you look reaaaaally close you might be able to make out some teeny tiny people.
My last image from here was way too colorful, I'll probably redo it sometime.
Hope you like it!
There’s something distinctly otherworldly about Dungeness (Kent, UK). It might have something to do with the strange combination of a nuclear power station, battered fishermen’s huts, lighthouses, fishing boats in decomposition, the ‘acoustic mirrors’, concrete oddities and the largest expanse of shingle in Europe. Dungeness is simultaneously a desolate dystopian land and a place of awe-inspiring beauty.
I pulled over a top a hill to photograph a few farms amongst the rolling hills in upstate New York, but as I looked below me I was more fascinated by this group of white trees stands strangely apart and quite different from their surroundings. I thought of some old wise Sages discussing things mystical and of great important.
Sunset light over the rocks at the otherworldly landscapes of the Yardan National Park
Entering Vatnajoekull National Park in South Iceland we stumbled upon this place which to me looked highly alien, some strange SciFi world we did not belong to. I gather the round structure serves to gather those Icelandic horses maybe, but honestly I do not know.
We arrived at Vestrahorn in the late afternoon just after a dusting of snow. The sky was a white/gray, which made me worry about what the shot would look like. The last time I was here in January of 2020, we had a spectacular sunrise, but the sunset on this day was set to be underwhelming. I was fortunate to grab this shot just before the clouds rolled in and obscured the mountains. Pretty otherworldly and very lucky. 20220116 Vestrahorn 11b
Old, unique, and full of personality… The Tufa is otherworldly, but you need to search to find the best views. When we finally arrived at the South Tufa in the afternoon, we were thrilled and surprised by the number and beauty of these incredible God made structures on the lake... There is an easy boardwalk trail down to the Lake. The views are magnificent and beautiful. This lake is often used as the face of 'wish you were here' postcards, and deservedly so.
Mono Lake is an otherworldly place. It's 2.5 times as salty as the Ocean and only shrimp live in it. The structures you see in this photograph are called Tufa. Tufa are formed when underground calcium is deposited into the saline lake by underground freshwater springs. It creates calcium carbonate structures...very cool place...it's fun to photograph:)
Nothing could stop me tonight
You make me feel invincible
Earthquake, powerful
Just like a tidal wave
You make me brave
You're my titanium
Fight song, raising up
Like a roar of victory in a stadium
Who can touch me 'cause I'm (I'm made of fire)
Who can stop me tonight (I'm hard wired)
You make me feel invincible”
