So said by Gwendolen to Jack Worthing in Oscar Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest, a farcical comedy.

Oscar Wilde is an Irish poet and playwright. He is regarded as one of the greatest producers of Irish literature.

Oscar Wilde est un poète et dramaturge irlandais. Il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands créateurs de littérature irlandaise.

A few days ago, the above art work appeared overnight on an outside wall of Reading Prison which has stood empty since it closed at the end of 2013. There was immediate speculation it was the work of the street artist Banksy whose identity has never been confirmed despite the fact his numerous works have appeared at various locations over a long period of years.

The paintings often form a social message and can be controversial. Reading Prison is very much a controversial place – it is owned by the Ministry of Justice who have been trying to dispose of it for the last 7 years. For them one of the problems is the property is designated a grade II listed building which means it cannot be demolished or substantially altered without prior consent from the Local Authority – Reading Borough Council. There have been calls for it to be used as a public amenity such as a theatre or arts facility and a deal to redevelop it has fallen through so in effect there has been little or no progress for 7 years.

Yesterday Banksy confirmed it was his art work although he did not shed any light on who the figure was supposed to be. Much of the local view is that it is a representation of Oscar Wilde, the Victorian actor, writer and poet who was incarcerated there from 1895 to 1897 – probably the prisons main claim to fame.

It is questionable as to whether the painting helps or hinders the current deadlock although it has provided some amusement for local residents in what is otherwise a depressing time!

The Adler Hotel, also known as the Hotel Adler, was a 150-room, five-story hotel in Sharon Springs, New York, that operated from 1929 until 2004. Known for its therapeutic sulfur spa, it catered primarily to a Jewish clientele who travelled to Sharon Springs in the summers. It was kosher, with two kitchens. It was built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and was adjacent to the Pavilion Hotel (demolished in 1941), which had been a summer destination for guests such as the Vanderbilts, Rensselaers, and Oscar Wilde. Ed Koch worked as a busboy at the Adler Hotel in 1946. When Steven Spielberg was preparing for Schindler's List, he interviewed survivors staying at the hotel.

Oscar Wilde beloved in eternity....

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Wilde :

"....His tomb in Père Lachaise was designed by sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein, at the request of Robert Ross.....The numerous spots on the tombstone are lipstick traces from admirers.

The modernist angel depicted as a relief on the tomb was originally complete with male genitals which were broken off and kept as a paperweight by a succession of Père Lachaise Cemetery keepers; their current whereabouts are unknown. In the summer of 2000, intermedia artist Leon Johnson performed a forty minute ceremony entitled Re-membering Wilde in which a commissioned silver prosthesis was installed to replace the vandalised genitals."

".......For we to death with pipe and dancing go,

Now would we pass the ivory gate again,

As some sad river wearied of its flow

Through the dull plains, the haunts of common men,

Leaps lover-like into the terrible sea!

And counts it gain to die so gloriously.

We mar our lordly strength in barren strife

With the world's legions led by clamorous care,

It never feels decay but gathers life

From the pure sunlight and the supreme air,

We live beneath Time's wasting sovereignty,

It is the child of all eternity. "

Oscar Wilde ~ Athanasia

"Still at the beginning I believe that God made a world for each separate man, and within that world, which is within us, one should seek to live."

Since the event is serendipitously taking place at Ocean Beach in New London, CT, where our book was written, it seemed fitting to tie in our painter's cloth and a nautical map of the area, specifically "Alewife Cove" which was our main inspiration.

Since tomorrow it's Saint Patrick's day, I couldn't find anything more Irish in my Hard Drive than a photo that I took somewhere in Dublin that features a green painted wall, with Irish banners and flags and a quote from Oscar Wilde and then pair it with a song from my favorite Irish street band (Mutefish - Here's another photo of them:

Happy St Patrick's to all! may the Guinness be endless where you will celebrate the day!

Sister

I don't really write descriptions anymore, which I find extremely sad because I used to have one at the bottom of each photo, and I don't enjoy my photos as much as I used to, partly because I have so many things to do and school is quite a struggle. I dislike public speaking so much and in every single tutorial (I have four each week) we're supposed to discuss our opinions and such. I feel much more comfortable expressing my ideologies through writing, then through talking about it. Sometimes I feel like most things are engineered to be suitable for extroverts, than introverts, and the quiet ones are the people always losing out in the end.

This was the stage setting for Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Ernest, as it was performed by Chattyboo Productions at Cork Arts Theatre last year.

Here is an announcement and a review with photos.

Taken for the group Macro Monday on 4th October for where the theme was Oscar Wilde quotes.

I think I may revisit this theme again as he had some wonderful quotes, I could have taken many more shots today I just lacked the time :-)
