La bella linea della Valtellina ha oggi avuto come ospite d'eccezione sul consueto "merci dell'acqua" la bellissima E652.003. Eccola da poco ripartita dalla stazione di Teglio dove ha effettuato un incrocio.

'Twas noontide of summer,

And midtime of night,

And stars, in their orbits,

Shone pale, through the light

Of the brighter, cold moon.

'Mid planets her slaves,

Herself in the Heavens,

Her beam on the waves.

I gazed awhile

On her cold smile;

Too cold--too cold for me--

There passed, as a shroud,

A fleecy cloud,

And I turned away to thee,

Proud Evening Star,

In thy glory afar

And dearer thy beam shall be;

For joy to my heart

Is the proud part

Thou bearest in Heaven at night,

And more I admire

Thy distant fire,

Than that colder, lowly light.

Four Dutch boys portrayed by the New Zealand photographer George Crombie (prob.) in Volendam in 1910. My restoration and digital hand colorization of the original image in the Museum of New Zealand archive.

Here are a couple of excerpts from an article written by Gareth Watkins (Museum of New Zealand):

"He was born in Scotland in 1882, immigrated as a small child with his family to New Zealand, and spent much of his youth in Roslyn, Dunedin. He worked in his father’s tailor shop as a cutter, and in his spare time became an enthusiastic member of the Dunedin Photographic Society." --

"In early 1910 George took his camera on an overseas trip, traveling to Sydney to board the S.S. Orvieto liner bound for Europe via the Suez Canal. George visited Egypt, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and England. Around 150 of his stereoscopic images from this trip were published by the New Zealand Graphic." --

"It is only a couple of years later that George would again find himself on European soil.

The Otago Daily Times noted that George originally enlisted in the Medical Corps but later transferred to the infantry. He left New Zealand in late 1916 and was killed in action on 13 June 1917 at Messines, Belgium."

This binocular belonged to my deceased father-in-law. My mother- in-law gave it to me. It was more than 25 years old and in bad shape. Focus- system not working and it was manhandled by several grandchildren incl. my own.

It was shipped to Austria and it came back 4 weeks later. It looked brand new and optics.... well.... FANTASTIC!.

Oh and the cost? Absolutly free. No charge at all.

Nestled in a spectacular wooded gorge stands a monument to British industry – the world’s first iron bridge. Crossing the River Severn, it was completed in 1779 and opened to traffic in 1781. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and remains an iconic feature of Britain’s industrial past
