SAUVIE ISLAND, Ore. – Operating an organic vegetable farm requires hard work and strategic planning. Just ask Brian Wood, farm manager for Sauvie Island Organics, located about 15 miles north of downtown Portland. Brian and his crew operate a thriving Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program on the farm, which has served fresh produce to the Portland community since 1993. Over the years, staff with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) have worked with Sauvie Island Organics to provide financial incentives and conservation assistance. NRCS on-farm projects include installing a seasonal high tunnel and integrating cover crops and crop rotations into the growing schedule. NRCS photos by Tracy Robillard.
