Horse Guards is a large grade I listed building in the Palladian style between Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade in London, England. It was built between 1751-1753 by John Vardy to a design by William Kent. The building was constructed on the site of the Guard House of the old Whitehall Palace, which had been destroyed by fire in 1698. The palace's tiltyard became the exercise ground of Horse Guards Parade, located behind the Horse Guards building.

Today's theme in We're Here! is "On Horseback" and I'm not sure I could find anything...
I chose these four photos because I could hold all four of them in one hand. These were from the prints I have in an album that I kept with me last year when I had my knee replacement. I titled it: "Inspiration and Motivation" because I was absolutely NOT going to miss Bristol because of something as trivial as major surgery. (news flash- I didn't miss a single day of 2016's Bristol season).
Edited to add: I realize now that this doesn't go with the group's theme of "trail riding"... I actually don't have any photos of trail riding, just jousting.

The figure of Apollo at Versailles on the chariot of the sun is an allegorical
allusion to Louis XIV,the Sun King.
Trogir was founded by Greek colonists in the 3rd century BC. In Roman times this was an important harbour town. From the 9th century on Trogir was under Croatian rule and later part of the Byzantine empire. A diocese was established in the 11th century, in 1107 the Hungarian-Croatian King Coloman ("The Bookish", "Kálmán Könyves") granted the autonomy.
Saracen troops conquered Trogir in 1123 and demolished most of it. From 1420 upto 1797 Trogir belonged to the Republic of Venice. For a short while it belonged to the Napoleonic kingdom of Italy, but upto 1918 Trogir was part of the Habsburg Empire.
Trogir is more than 2000 years old. It grew under the influence of the ancient Greeks, the Romans, and the Venetians... Trogir's medieval core, surrounded by walls, comprises (about 10) churches, houses and palaces from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Since 1997 the centre of Trogir is a "UNESCO World Heritage Site".
The Cathedral of St. Lawrence was erected from 1213 on the foundations of cathedral destroyed by the Saracens in 1123. Most of the work was done in the 13th century.
This cathedral is world wide known for Master Radovan´s portal. The portal was carved by the local architect and sculptor Master Radovan (and his workshop). It was completed and signed by Radovan in 1240.
Here are the two sides of the portal. The door posts are decorated with reliefs and two carved columns with scenes of hunting and beasts.
The sides of the columns, that flank the doors, are decorated with scenes of people and animals entangled by tendrils. There are hunting scenes but as well strange, exotic and mythical creatures.
Just below the mermaid (previous upload) is this beardless rider. Taking in account, that horses were smaller in medieval times, he may be a young boy.

Charlemagne / Latin: Carolus Magnus or Karolus Magnus, meaning Charles the Great) (2 April 742 – 28 January 814) was King of the Franks from 768 to his death. He expanded the Frankish kingdoms into a Frankish Empire that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe. During his reign, he conquered Italy and was crowned Imperator Augustus by Pope Leo III on 25 December 800 as a rival of the Byzantine Emperor in Constantinople. His rule is also associated with the Carolingian Renaissance, a revival of art, religion, and culture through the medium of the Catholic Church. Through his foreign conquests and internal reforms, Charlemagne helped define both Western Europe and the Middle Ages. He is numbered as Charles I in the regnal lists of France, Germany, and the Holy Roman Empire
The small church, named completely "Pieve dei Santi Vito e Modesto a Corsignano", was built from tuff during the 11th and 12th century. I had found this wonderful church about a decade ago - and just had to return.
Silvius Piccolomini was baptized in this church, who being Pope Pius II later, renamed and remodeled Pienza, supressed many convents and abbey in Tuscany - but fortunately did not touch the Pieve di Corsignano.

Two angels keep an eye on the Nativity scene. Ass and ox stand behind the crib - and Mary is seated to the right. Where is Joseph?

Vicofertile, located at the old Via Francigena, is meanwhile is a small suburb of the City of Parma.
A church probably existed in Vicofertile already within the 9th century, but the church mentioned in a document from 1039 was smaller than the church seen here. Excavations found the foundations about 50cms under the floor of San Geminiano.
Today´s church was erected around 1200. The roof burned down in 1325, but got rebuilt soon after. The church got modified a couple of times, but a a restoration undertaken in the early 20th century got rid of all interior Baroque additions.
The capitals were probably created around 1220/1230 - and all six are somehow enigmatic. Only the mermaid (previous upload) seems "simply".
A noble? king? with a crown? on his head, seated on a throne? holds his tummy, while a long-haired dwarf? rides a pony, that has short rear legs....
When I thought about it, I remembered the "painted pony" and the "spinnig wheel"...
Piazza Del Quirinale
This piazza is named after the highest of the seven hills of Rome. It is very close to the Trevi Fountain.
Source: Wikipedia
The Quirinale fountain and the obelisk with the prancing statues of Castor and Pollux stand in splendor in the piazza.
Castor and Pollux were excellent horsemen and two large statutes of them in their prancing horses adorn the square. These statues are over 5.5 metres high and are copies of the Greek originals of 5th century B.C. They were known as the horse tamers. These statues originally stood in front of the Baths of Constantine. In 1588 Pope Sixtus V had them restored and placed them in Piazza Quirinale.
The obelisk, which is placed between them, was brought here in 1786. It is one in a pair of obelisks. The other one stands at the Piazza de’Esquillino. It was unearthed from the ruins of the Mausoleum of Augustus in 1781. It is made of red granite. There is no inscription on this obelisk hence it may be a Roman copy. However some historians assume that it was transported from Egypt probably in the late first century.
In 1818 the composition was completed by the addition of the fountain, the fountain of the Dioscuri. It is a beautiful fountain, which has a massive granite basin. It was once a cattle trough in the Forum. The combination of these monuments is truly unique.
