Spokanne oldest Ballroom

The design of this venue was inspired by the Doge's Palace in Venice, built in the elaborate Venetian Gothic style. When it was completed in 1908, the Hall of the Doges was called the most opulent ballroom north of San Francisco. During the 2002 restoration, the Hall of The Doges was lifted intact by crane to become the only "flying ballroom" in the world. When the new building was erected, the ballroom was carefully placed back into the new structure as the foyer to the Grand Pennington Ballroom.

The Schnoor quarter is the oldest documented quarter of Bremen and it has largely preserved its medieval character.

First mentioned in the 13th century. The two oldest remaining buildings are from 1401 and 1402 respectively. Some buildings are just remaining facades or have been relocated from other locations.

The Itatiaia Park is the oldest national park of Brazil, created on June 14, 1937 by the then President Getulio Vargas.

Located at the Mantiqueira Mountain Range, the Itatiaia National Park includes part of the municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende in Rio de Janeiro state, and Bocaina de Minas and Itamonte in Minas Gerais state. It is near the President Dutra highway, half way from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo cities and next to the economic center of Resende.

The park relief is mountainous and characterized by rocky formations, with altitude between 540-2791 m, and at its highest point is the peak of the Black Needles (Agulhas Negras).

In Itatiaia Plateau region, also known as "Upper Part", are the high fields and hanging valleys where there are several river sources. In the Park area are the origins of 12 major regional river basins, which supply two main basins: Rio Grande (Grand River), an affluent of the Paraná River, and the Paraíba do Sul River, the most important of Rio de Janeiro.

The "Lower Part" has an exuberant Atlantic Forest vegetation and generous water courses, with several natural pools and waterfalls where swimming is permitted.

When my oldest daughter was a year old, my mom bought these two feet tall Minnie and Mickey motorized dolls to go in front of her fireplace at Christmas. My daughter was fascinated by them as they moved back and forth and used to clap her hands and jump up and down while she watched them.

A few years later when we moved away from my parents' home, my mom gave me Mickey and Minnie to display in my home for the kids. Now my youngest gets to get excited about them every year- and they are a conversation piece as well for all my Christmastime guests- I mean, who can resist Mickey and Minnie all gussied up for the holidays?

The oldest fishing village in the stunning Lofoten archipelago is small, but unbelievably beautiful. It is considered to be one of the most picturesque villages in the municipality of Moskenes, which is also a popular tourist destination due to its scenic and unspoiled nature.

As the display board says, this is the worlds oldest flying aeroplane!

Vicars' Close, in Wells, Somerset, is claimed to be the oldest purely residential street with original buildings surviving intact in Europe. This mid-14th century street has 27 properties (originally 44), built for Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury, a chapel and library at the north end, and a hall at the south end, over an arched gate. It is connected at its southern end to Wells Cathedral by way of a walkway over Chain Gate.

The Close is about 460 feet (140 m) long, and paved with setts (granite blocks). Its width is tapered by 10 feet (3.0 m) to make it look longer when viewed from here at the main entrance nearest the Cathedral.

The Daintree Rainforest is a region on the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Mossman and Cairns. At around 1,200 square kilometres, the Daintree is a part of the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent. The Daintree Rainforest is a part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland Rainforest, that spans across the Cairns Region. The Wet Tropics Rainforest (that the Daintree is a part of) is the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest in the world. Along the coastline north of the Daintree River, tropical forest grows right down to the edge of the sea. In 2009 as part of the Q150 celebrations, the Daintree Rainforest was announced as one of the Q150 Icons of Queensland for its role as a 'Natural attraction'. The tropical rainforest ecosystem of the Daintree Rainforest is one of the most complex on Earth. Its plant diversity and structural complexity is unrivaled on the Australian continent and represents the origins of other Australian flora. Millions of years ago, the Australian continent was warm and humid and rainfall was plentiful. During this time rainforest thrived in places such as the Uluru (Ayers Rock) region. As Australia became more arid, fewer and fewer places rainforests were able to survive. In the Daintree region, however, the climate and topography were ideal, so the area became a last remaining refuge for the rainforest. Within this refuge, many species were able to live comfortably without reason to change. Their descendants that are still living today retained many of their ancestors' primitive characteristics, some dating back 110 million years. One species in particular, Idiospermum australiense, commonly known as the idiot fruit, is one of the rarest and most primitive of the flowering plants. Its discovery in 1970 was arguably Australia's most significant botanical find, greatly increasing scientists awareness of just how ancient these forests really are. From a total of 19 primitive flowering plant families on Earth, 12 families are represented in the Daintree region making the highest concentration of these plants worldwide. These ancient plant families may be helpful for discerning the origins of the flowering plants. 22299

The Grassmarket is one of the oldest parts of the city, and although the architecture has changed the layout of its open space retains its historic character.

It has always been a bustling market place, in the past with many taverns and inns for the drovers coming to sell their cattle. Today there are still a variety of pubs and independent shops to visit.

The White Hart Inn here is probably the oldest pub in Edinburgh, visited by the poet Robert Burns in 1791 and later by the poet Dorothy Wordsworth.

By the foot of Victoria Street is the recently restored Bow Well. Built in 1681, it was the first provider of piped running water in Edinburgh.

The eastern part of the market was once the site of public executions, marked today by the Covenanters’ memorial.

Perhaps the most remarkable story connected with the place is the tale of Half-Hingit Maggie. After her hanging she miraculously came back to life and was allowed to go free. Look out for the pub named after her nearby.

The Grassmarket was used as a market from the 14th century, with cattle fairs, horse fairs and corn being bought and sold in its wide open space. But this also made it suitable for public executions, with the last hanging taking place here in 1784.

The oldest mention of Twickel is in 1347, when Herman van Twickelo bought the house Eysinck near Delden. This house later became Twickel Castle. The last owner has transferred Twickel to a foundation that still manages the property.

They are among the oldest horticultural orchids in the world. They are among the most popular orchid genus. They're an important cut flower crop for florists and are widely cultivated as a grower's fancy. Commonly known as boat orchids, is a genus of evergreen flowering plants in the orchid family Orchidaceae. Orchids in this genus are epiphytic, lithophytic, terrestrial or rarely leafless saprophytic herbs usually with pseudobulbs. There are usually between three and twelve leaves arranged in two ranks on each pseudobulb or shoot and lasting for several years. From one to a large number of flowers are arranged on an unbranched flowering stem arising from the base of the pseudobulb. The sepals and petals are all free from and similar to each other. The labellum is significantly different from the other petals and the sepals and has three lobes. There are about fifty-five species and sixteen further natural hybrids occurring in the wild from tropical and subtropical Asia to Australia. Cymbidiums are well known in horticulture and many cultivars have been developed. Plants in the genus Cymbidium are epiphytic, lithophytic or terrestrial plants, or rarely leafless saprophytes. All are sympodial evergreen herbs. Some species have thin stems but in most species the stems are modified as pseudobulbs. When present, there are from three to twelve leaves arrange in two ranks and last for several years. The leaf bases remain after the leaf has withered, forming a sheath around the pseudobulb. The flowers are arranged on an unbranched flowering stem which arises from the base of the pseudobulb or rarely from a leaf axil. 10530

Some of the oldest buildings in Austin can be found in the Sixth Street Historic District, a.k.a. Old Sixth Street and Dirty 6th, that runs east from Lavaca St. (2 blocks west of Congress Ave.) to I-35. While the Sixth St. entertainment district extends well past Congress Ave. to the west, and I-35 to the east, it is the historic section known for its clubs, bars, live music, restaurants, and 19th century architecture that made Austin the "Live Music Capital of the World."

This beautiful circa 1875 building, now home of the Friends Bar, one of Sixth Streets live music venues, is located at 208 E. 6th St. The Sixth Street Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The oldest mention of Huva Ten Berghe dates from 1483. The house was restored in 1985. The house takes its name from a river dune nearby.

Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest fortified places in Europe with a long rich history for the past 10 centuries as a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress. Located on the Castle Rock, it is an iconic symbol for Edinburgh and Scotland. It appears, in stylised form, on the coats of arms of the City of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh. Today, it is a major tourist attraction with over 1.5 million visitors. It still has a military role and holds a series of performances known as Edinburgh Military Tattoo that takes place on the Esplanade each year in August. It established the Time Gun in 1861 for ships in the harbour of Leith and the Firth of Forth. The One O’Clock Gun is fired every day, except on Sundays and holidays, from the Mill’s Mount Battery. There are many other things to see and do such as a visit to the National War Museum of Scotland, and many other features of the castle.

This is the oldest, uninhabited part of Beverston Castle. In fact, I had to take this photo through the bars of an iron gate, so I couldn't get any closer to avoid the dark shadows ...

On Wikipedia, there is some information on Beverston Castle to be found, accompanied by a photo that is almost identical to mine! This is an extract:

"Beverston Castle, also known as Beverstone Castle or Tetbury Castle, was constructed as a medieval stone fortress in the village of Beverston, Gloucestershire, England. The property is a mix of manor house, various small buildings, extensive gardens and the medieval ruins of the fortified building. The castle was founded in 1229 by Maurice de Gaunt, and it saw action in the Civil War.

Much of the castle remained in a state of ruin according to a 2019 report, and had been uninhabitable since the 17th century. Several buildings on the 693-acre property, including five cottages and the 17th century house with seven bedrooms, were in use as residences, however."

This week's Macro Monday's post is for the "oldest object I can find" theme.

There's not much old in my house - I can't really find much older than I am. However, my daughter did have some fossils, I love the translucency in this ammonite.

Vyšehrad is the oldest seat of Czech princes; in fact, the local settlement was established in the mid-10 th century. Situated on a rocky promontory above the Vltava River, it offers stunning views of the city, and the park area holds hidden architectural treasures including the rare Romanesque Rotunda of St Martin, the neo-Gothic Church of Sts Peter and Paul, the national cemetery Slavín, and the underground casements housing the some of the original Baroque statues from the Charles Bridge.

The oldest pub on Poole Quay.

Originating from 1635 and steeped in history this distinctive green tiled pub on the quayside is popular with locals and tourists alike. Pews, the bar and wood panelled walls adorned with old Poole photographs dominate the small cosy single room interior, while bench seating at the front provides a great place to watch the many activities taking place on the quay

Pushkar is one of the oldest existing cities of India. It lies on the shore of the Pushkar Sarovar (Lake). The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Brahma with its creation. The city has many temples and ghats and has people from all over the world coming here. It has flourishing market with loads of tourists and pilgrims. This old Sadhu I spotted in one such market. Thick gray eyebrows and mustache, stubble and wearing head scarf, he looked stern and gave a very angry look to me showing displeasure at being shot!

The worlds oldest active ship, Star of India celebrated her 151th birthday this November and it will be setting sail in honor of this memorable occasion out of San Diego Bay and into the ocean. Star of India was built in 1863 at Ramsey in the Isle of Man as Euterpe, a full-rigged iron windjammer ship. After a full career sailing from Great Britain to India and New Zealand, she became a salmon hauler on the Alaska to California route. Retired in 1926, she was not restored until 1962–63 and is now a seaworthy museum ship home-ported at the Maritime Museum of San Diego in San Diego, California. She is the oldest ship still sailing regularly and also the oldest iron-hulled merchant ship still floating. The ship is both a California Historical Landmark and United States National Historic ship.

Greensted Church in Essex, England is often claimed to be the world's oldest wooden church, though only some of its original structure remains. The oak walls are believed to date back to the mid-9th or mid-11th century, and may be remnants of a palisade church or early stave church.

Greensted Church is a Grade I listed building and is still in use, holding weekly services. It's located in the village of Greensted, about a mile west of Chipping Ongar town center. The church's full title is The Church of St Andrew, Greensted-juxta-Ongar, but it's more commonly known as Greensted Church.

For Macro Mondays' theme of the week : “Oldest Object You Can Find"

This clock was given to me a long time ago by my mother. She said it came from her great-grandaunt who worked as a housekeeper in a wealthy bourgeois family. When she retired they offered her this clock as a reward for her devotion.

There used to be a glass globe to protect it but I broke it when trying to clean it, unfortunately. Which provoqued a very angry reaction on the part of my mother who said that generations of women had cleaned it without breaking it.

My mother has always been very good at reinforcing my self-confidence. :-)
