The Octopus Stinkhorn, scientifically known as Clathrus archeri, is a distinctive fungus native to New Zealand and Australia. It's also known by other names like Devil's Fingers or Giant Stinkhorn. Characterized by its reddish, tentacle-like arms emerging from a pale, egg-like structure, it's easily recognizable. This fungus is known for its unpleasant, rotting-flesh odor, which attracts insects for spore dispersal.
Clathrus archeri, commonly known as octopus stinkhorn or devil's fingers, is a fungus which has a global distribution. The young fungus erupts from a suberumpent egg by forming into four to seven elongated slender arms initially erect and attached at the top.

After I first saw this octopus, it moved to where it was hidden by a rock. When I picked up a nearby rock, it swam to the shallow end and got out briefly and here it was going back into the pool.

Octopuses live in every ocean, and different species have adapted to different marine habitats.According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, most octopus species are not endangered. Most are either listed as least concern or as data deficient, which means there isn't enough data about the species to make a determination on their endangered status.

@artistryink_challenge prompt: Knitted Sweater.
Did you know the octopus mother can lay between a few dozen eggs to around 500,000 depending on the species? The male usually dies within a week or two of mating, while the female dies shortly after the eggs hatch. This can be problematic for the female trying to knit sweaters for all her offspring. Okay, octopuses don’t knit sweaters, but the rest of this trivia is true.

There are nine species of Tmarus present here in Australia, this one being T.marmoreus.
Colour is grey/brown and therefore usually well camouflaged against for example dead leaves and twigs. However, I happened to find this one on the lid of my recycling bin!
