Algunos odonatos adoptan esta postura, obelisco, para que la incidencia de los rayos solares en su cuerpo sea menor y además, hacen sombra con sus alas en algunas partes del mismo.

Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor the Obelisk in Ripon Market Square was erected by the town council in 1702 to commemorate the Ripon Hornblowers who date back to the reign of King Alfred in 886. There is a horn on the very top
Each evening at 9 o’clock the Wakeman was ordered to sound the charter horn at the four corners of the market cross to let the people know the watch was set and all was well. Remarkably this ritual has been carried on unbroken ever since so if you are in Ripon at 9 pm go to the Market Square
The height of the obelisk tends to dwarf the surrounding houses.

Foscani, Romania - obelisk on the place where the unification of Romania took place. January 24 is the day of the Union of Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859. It was the beginning of the modern Romania, a constitutional monarchy at that time.
In the 1850s (after the Crimean War), Focșani grew in importance as the center of activities in favor of the union between Wallachia and Moldavia (the Danubian Principalities), leading to the double election of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza in Iași and Bucharest.
Focșani's role in the forming of the modern Romanian state is immortalized in the Union Square Obelisk.

The obelisk was erected in 1739.
The monument is inscribed as follows:
To the Memory of Gregory Wale Esq, Justice of the Peace for this County. Deputy Lieutenant. County Treasurer. Conservator of the River Cam. He lived an advocate for liberty. A good subject. An agreeable companion, a faithful friend, an hospitable neighbour, and in all parts of life a useful member of society. He died June 5th 1739 in the 71st year of his age: universally lamented, and was buried in the parish church of Little Shelford. This obelisk was erected by his surviving friend James Church Esq as a public testimony of his regard to the memory of so worthy a gentleman.
Gregory Wale and James Church used to meet regularly at this place, and they agreed that when one of them died, the survivor should put up a monument to his friend's memory on the very spot where they so often met.
After the death of Gregory Wale, his granddaughter Margot Wale often used to walk up the mount and was very fond of it. At the latter end of her life she would lie at her window and watch her little hill and her friends and the country people got into the habit of calling it "Margot's Mount" and in later years this was corrupted to "Maggot's Mount".

The Killiney Obelisk, located in a stunning location on Killiney Hill, commemorates a sad event in Ireland’s history. It was commissioned by John Malpas (a wealthy Catholic who had previously owned this land) in response to the famine of 1740 and 1741. This ‘forgotten famine’ was caused by an incredibly cold winter that was followed by severe floods that destroyed livestock and crops. Reports say that it was so cold in Dublin that small vessels were destroyed by icebergs on the River Liffey and towns and cities were plunged into darkness as the street lamps could not be lit. Food riots were also common and sickness broke out throughout the country. Famine relief projects were organized by philanthropists like John Malpas and Kathryn Connolly who’s follies gave employment to destitute families. The year 1741 became known as ‘the year of the slaughter’ among the Irish.

Spent this evening looking through my archive shots for a competition entry, I stumbled across this shot that I had forgotten about.
I know it's a bit of a Cliché shot of Portishead.
