"Friend of mine
Is a black suitcase and a frowny face
Had a life
And now my eyes are glazed 'cause they dug my grave
All I wanna do is shake my head
Shake my head, shake my head
But how am I gonna do that with a broken neck?
A broken neck, guess I ain't like them
(Guess I ain't like them)
I'm just a dead girl, don't live in your world
I just roll my eyes back every time I hear that
Ooh-ooh-ooh, here we go again

July Storm
This is one of my regular spots to take sunsets. I was here for only a few minutes, for I feared that I could get hit by lightening. I couldn't get over how colorful everything was and fierce the sky looked. I got out of there fast.
BTW. There was no friggin way that I was going any further into that field. Nuh uh...nada...zip. I went far enough. ;-)
*** Explored on 1/5/2023! ***
I'm often asked why I take pictures? The answer is two-fold: for myself, to remember the places I've been, and for others, to inspire them to see the world. Every day for 6 years I would walk by a photo of this scene in the Lofoton Islands of Norway. SmugMug had a giant panorama print of Reine -- it took over the whole wall -- and it was hung in one of the main hallways. Every day I'd walk by it and say "one day I'm going to go there."
After 3 trips to Iceland, Rebecca finally said to me "damnit, we're going to Norway. I'll plan the trip. You can come along if you'd like." So we booked flights, invited Andy along ... and then promptly kicked Rebecca out of planning the trip. Andy and I did most of the planning and a 7 day photo trip turned into a 5 day trip with 2 days of backcountry skiing. I'll cut to the chase and skip the long story about how we nearly didn't make it here and just leave it at this: We stopped in Iceland on the way, photographed some ice-caves, beat the largest snowstorm in Reykjavik's history and caught our flight with 5 minutes to spare. Everything was easy after that.
This is probably the most photographed scene in all of the Lofoton Islands, with a similar photo from Hamnoy coming in a close second, but I don't care. This inspired me to travel halfway across the world and see and do something different. So here's my own take, taken at 6:30am on a cold morning, when the wind died down long enough for the unnamed mountain peak to reflect in the water. Reine (pronounced Ray-nuh), is a gorgeous fishing village, now turned into tourist attraction. We stayed in some of those red huts on the right. I find it interesting that the tallest peak here is, as far as I can tell, unnamed. All the other peaks are named except for the main peak. Strange.

1. a Christmas tree.
-----
Snow? On Christmas Eve Day? Well, better head out to Mer Bleue to feed the birds and walk the trails!
The roads were surprisingly empty of cars early this morning, probably because people were gathered at malls to get their last minute shopping done.
But luckily for me, I finished all my shopping earlier in the week, even managed to finish my wrapping too, so today, with only a few things that needed doing, I decided to take some time to myself and walk in the snow.
The temperatures were mild and the snow made the woods seem a little more mystical than usual so I walked further than I should have and when I got back to the parking lot, I got a tip about a porcupine in a tree and set back out looking for him.
He had moved on, but the extra hour walking was nice. My legs aren't too happy about walking so long in knee high (in many places) snow, but that's okay. A good workout won't hurt me!
Hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas Eve!

Looking ahead at the schedule for today, I knew things would roll out of control and leave hardly any photography time once I walked through the office doors, so planning ahead, I decided being 10 minutes later than usual wouldn't hurt anyone and would allow me to cross something off my list.
So before walking through the doors, I stopped on MacKenzie King bridge and grabbed a couple quick night shots... yes I get to the office that early, every morning.
I'm glad I delayed starting my work day, I forgot to change my white balance settings and I ended up with a pink glow in the sky instead of the black night sky which I think really helps makes this photo.
Anyway, hope everyone has had a good day.

Introduction
The Small Copper is a fast flying butterfly that, once settled, is unmistakable with its bright copper-coloured forewings. It is a widespread species and a familiar and welcome sight for many naturalists throughout the summer months. This butterfly occurs in discrete colonies throughout the British Isles, but is absent from mountainous areas and far north-west Scotland, the Outer Hebrides and Shetland. Most colonies are fairly small, with just a few adults being seen on the wing at any one time.
The species was first defined in Linnaeus (1761). The nominate subspecies has not been recorded in the British Isles.
This subspecies is found throughout the British Isles, with the exception of Ireland.
Lycaena phlaeas ssp. eleus (Fabricius, 1798)
Wings brown, notched; the forewings in the discal region reddish yellow on both sides, with black spots, the hindwings with a reddish yellow band, grey beneath, with black spots.
Lives in Germany.
Doubtless related to H. helle but quite distinct. Antennae brown, ringed white, with a black, oblong club, tip rust-coloured. Forewings dark brown with a bright reddish yellow discal region with large black spots, grey beneath with a reddish orange discal region with (small?) black eyespots. Hindwings greatly notched and generally twin-tailed, dark brown, with a bright band with short teeth, reddish yellow, grey beneath with minute black spots and a faint reddish yellow outer band.
Lycaena phlaeas ssp. hibernica
This subspecies was first defined in Goodson (1948) (type locality: County Kerry, Ireland).
This subspecies is found throughout Ireland and Goodson's analysis was based on 45 specimens from Co. Kerry, 258 from Co. Cork, 18 from Co. Kildare, 10 from Co. Dublin, 10 from Co. Galway, 1 from Belfast and approximately 160 from England. Based on a small number of specimens, Riley (2007) suggests that the subspecies may be found on the Isle of Man, but acknowledges that "study of a larger sample is required for confirmation".
This subspecies differs from ssp. eleus as follows:
1. On the upperside of the hindwings the copper band is generally broader.
2. On the underside the ground colour is generally greyer than the brown of eleus.
3. On the underside of the hindwings the red marginal band is brighter and more conspicuous.
Lycaena phlaeas ssp. hibernica (Goodson, 1948)
♂ ♀. Upperside. Differs in the broader copper band of the hind wings, which, however, varies to a certain extent, some specimens being comparatively narrow. This is also so in
English specimens, but it is safe to say that the narrowest English specimens are narrower than the narrowest Irish, whilst the broadest Irish are broader than any English.
Underside. The main difference is found here. Ground-colour invariably greyer than English examples, which, by comparison, are of various shades of brown. The red marginal band of the hind wings much more conspicuous and of a brighter hue, always distinct, even brilliant in Irish specimens, whilst in English ones usually narrow, rather dull or obscure. A series of undersides, Irish and English, shows a marked difference in this respect, enhanced by the grey ground of the Irish examples.
Conservation Status
Despite a long-term decline in distribution, this is still a widespread butterfly and is not currently a priority species for conservation efforts.
Habitat
This butterfly favours open land where nectar sources and foodplant are found. Such habitats include grassland, wasteland, heathland, old quarries, embankments, road verges and woodland rides.
Life Cycle
There are typically 2 or 3 generations each year, depending on the weather, with 4 generations in extremely good years. The first adults emerge in May, occasionally at the end of April, with the last adults being seen around the middle of October, depending on location.
Imago
This sun-loving butterfly is often found resting on the ground, vegetation or flowers, as it absorbs the sun's rays. Males establish small territories and fly up to intercept any passing insect in the hope of intercepting a passing female. When egg-laying, females are easy to distinguish from males, as they fly low across the ground searching for suitable foodplants on which to lay. Both sexes roost head down on grass stems.
Ovum
Eggs are laid singly, usually on the underside of a leaf of the foodplant, those growing in full sunshine being preferred. The egg is white when first laid, gradually become grey before the larva emerges. Eggs hatch in 1 or 2 weeks.
Pupa
The larva leaves its foodplant to pupate low down in the vegetation, such as on a dead leaf. The pupa is attached by a silk girdle and the cremaster. This stage lasts around 3 or 4 weeks.
Aberrations
Aberration is fairly frequently met with in this species and even quite small colonies can produce interesting forms year after year. It is always worth having a close look at any Small Copper that you see in the field.
Upperside ground colour can vary from pure silver-white through oranges and fiery reds, to deeply suffused specimens that appear almost entirely black. The amount of copper on the hindwing band can be greatly exaggerated or reduced to the point of absence. The number, size, and shape of the black forewing spots can also vary considerably on both the upperside and underside; and even the tails on the hind wings can be markedly exaggerated in length. Heavy suffusion on the upperside is probably environmentally triggered and can sometimes be met with relative frequency in the autumn generation following a particularly hot summer.
Rarely (as in other species) more than one genetically inherited aberration can be expressed in the same specimen. This becomes particularly impressive where, for example, the silver-white ab. schmidtii also expresses the blue markings on the hindwings known as ab. caeruleopunctata and the reduced forewing markings of ab. bipunctata. Such multiple aberrations are almost unknown in the wild but have been produced in captivity by selective pairing of aberrant imagines through successive generations. There are 140 named aberrations known to occur in Britain.

This is a great dessert if you've misled your dinner guests into believing your culinary skills are a little more advanced than "I've figured out how to mince garlic without losing a finger."
It looks a lot more complicated and time consuming than it really is, so if you have guests that need impressing, remember this recipe!
Recipe is from the Sea Salt Sweet cookbook (bakebook?) by Heather Baird.
Recipe
Ingredients:
- Unsalted butter, for ramekins
- 1/2 cup of ricotta cheese
- 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
- 1/16 teaspoon of fine-grain sea salt
- 6 sheets of frozen phyllo dough, thawed
- 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted
- 12 fresh figs, quartered
- 6 tablespoons of chopped walnuts, toasted
- 1/2 cup of wildflower honey (I used regular honey, wildflower was super expensive)
Directions:
01. Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C.
02. Butter six round ramekins and set aside. (I only have four ramekins, so I did two sets of three in the oven. If you do this, make sure to cover the waiting phyllo sheets with a damp paper towel.)
03. Place the ricotta and heavy whipping cream in a small to medium mixing bowl. Beat the mixture on medium speed with an electric mixer, gradually adding the sugar, until the mixture is thickened and has soft peaks.
04. Add the vanilla and salt; mix well. Cover the mixture and chill while the other elements are prepared.
05. Stack 2 phyllo sheets on a work surface and cover the remaining sheets with a damp paper towel to prevent the dough from drying.
06. Brush the sheets evenly with some of the melted butter.
07. Top the buttered phyllo sheets with 2 more sheets of phyllo and brush with butter as before.
08.Top with the last 2 phyllo sheets and gently press all the layers together.
09. Cut the phyllo stacks into six rectangles. 10. Carefully fit a rectangle of phyllo into each buttered ramekin, creating a phyllo cup. The phyllo will slightly extend over the top of each ramekin. (This is the second hardest part of the recipe)
11. Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and transfer to the oven.
12. . Bake for 20 minutes, or until the phyllo dough cups are crisp and golden.
13. Allow the phyllo cups to cool for 5 minutes inside the ramekins, then gently remove them and place them on a cooling rack. (This is the hardest part) The cups may also be kept inside the ramekins for serving, if you prefer.
14. Just before serving, divide the ricotta mixture evenly among the cups.
Top each basket with 2 quartered figs. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of toasted walnut pieces over each cup and drizzle each cup with honey.
15. Serve immediately and impress your guests!
Hope everyone has had a good day.

I managed to get my hands on a waffle maker this week; what a treat! And appropriate since it's Mother's Day and who doesn't love the classic brunch to spoil Mom!
Now in the spirit of honesty, Mom didn't get to induldge; we celebrated yesterday with the extended family in Kingston, so today Mom wanted to take it easy and relax at home... well she's probably found projects to do. But that's Mom for you!
Anyway, the waffle maker was pretty cool, but I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy one. The taste wasn't too different than the (not frozen) store bought waffles and there's a lot less clean up involved in those!
Recipe:
Ingredients:
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon of salt
4 teaspoons of baking powder
2 tablespoons of white sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups of warm milk
1/3 cup of melted butter
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar; set aside.
2. Preheat waffle iron to desired temperature.(the iron I borrowed only had two options, on and off, so I selected on...)
3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Stir in the milk, butter and vanilla.
4. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture; beat until blended.
5. Ladle the batter into a preheated waffle iron. 6. Cook the waffles until golden and crisp.
Anyway, happy Mother's Day, hope you're all having a good day.

You may think and it may look like he wants to come in the house, but really what he wants is for me to come out, preferably carrying the evening food bucket, or carrying perhaps an armload of harnesses.
Alder has never been in the house, his choice. He’s been invited, like here I opened the door for him but after a couple of sniffs he turns and runs. “Nuh-uh” is his attitude right now. He’s a village dog at heart, he's curious but the inside of the house is a great mystery to him, for now.
Also, he's a very good boy.

This was very last photo of the abandoned distillery in which we have slept over in. The day was quickly getting away from us & we had so much more exploring to do elsewhere. I had only seen a few pictures from this location before visiting so I really wasn't entirely sure what to look for. The compound was massive with multiple buildings. In order to gain access to this one we had to navigate through a large, empty & very boring office area to a corridor that had be sealed off but someone was kind enough to bust open the drywall prior to our visit. We then were in yet another office area & time was ticking. It was getting to be mid afternoon & we felt we were wasting time in this boring area. It was decided we would follow the corridor to the end just to be surer we didn't miss something. We entered a dark room as something had caught my eye which turned out to be duct work. Then I spotted what appear to be an industrial area. We headed in that direction, went up a flight of stairs & opened a door finding ourselves in a totally new & factory like area! It was awesome but as mentioned we had to move quick both filming & taking photos. I have always been a fan of concrete pillars in industrial buildings as well as spiral staircases. This one room offers both!! I know a lot of people prefer other locations over industrial/manufacturing however this is where stuff is made....plus here they made happy drinks! A sad place to see be abandoned!
Exploring is the mission, Not a competition.

The polar vortex has arrived and the wind downtown was bitter and sharp, but that can't keep me locked in an office for 9 hours when I could be out walking between office locations and wondering around on lunch hour.
Came across this unique door and took a risk by standing in the street to get this shot. I only had my 40mm with me today so to get the effect I wanted I needed to do a panorama, it took 5 pictures stitched together to get the whole effect but it was worth it to me.
I like interesting entrance ways and this one sure stands out!
Thanks to the taxi driver who came to a full stop and let me get the photos. Not something I expected downtown, but appreciated none the less!
Hope everyone has had a good day.

I sneakered this shot from the front garden of someone a couple of streets away. I hope they won't miss it. If you happen to see someone looking for a tulip, it's not this one. OK? Definitely not. Nuh-uh. Besides, this one looks so much better in sad bokeh friday.
As part of our CDP 2nd anniversary celebreation, we head out to Mantayupan Falls in Barili.
The falls were very impressive. Due to the height and intensity of the falls, mist would rise up from the water. We had to clean our lenses several times in order to get a clear shot.

Less then a year after my first visit I returned to one of the coolest spots I've been. It's not often you find abandoned planes, especially in Ontario! Not much had changed since my original visit aside from one plane had both engines removed. Seeing as this property is owned by a nearby farmer I suspect they were taken legally however I've heard from others he refused to sell. There once was a runway on the property which is still somewhat visible on google maps however it has mostly be destroyed by years of plowing the field.

Bishop Creek Road, which takes one on a beautiful drive up into the Sierra Nevada, ends here at Lake Sabrina. If you ask for directions, know that local residents pronounce the lake 'Sah-bry-nuh'" even though the lake was named after Mrs. Sabrina (pronounced: suh-BREE-nuh) Hobbs.
However you pronounce it, at 9,124 feet, the air is clean and the view of the peaks is worth the drive. There is a parking lot there and a cafe which is open before the snow closes the road.
There are several trails leading part-way around the water.
