The London Independent Photography Crouch End group is pleased to present its ninth annual exhibition. With an open theme, the show features a diverse range of work from sixteen photographers.
The exhibition is at at The Original Gallery at Hornsey Library, Haringey Park, London, N8 9JA, England.
Public Transport: Crouch Hill, Hornsey, Archway or Finsbury Park stations. The exhibition has been organised and curated by Eva Turrell and Lizzie Brown. The poster was created by Sonia Hunt with a photo by Robin Barr.

This is a well-known cultivar of a species of iris from swamps of northeast Asia. Although in 1915 'Rose Queen' was originally introduced as, and is almost always still sold as, a cultivar of I. laevigata (or sometimes I. laevigata x. ensata), the chromosome number (24) clearly shows it is an I. ensata, according to 'A Guide to Species Irises: their Identification and Cultivation' [1997]. Nonetheless, the leaves are unlike ensata, as they lack a prominent mid-rib. It has tall flowering-stalks. It has 'primitive' floral characteristics, the flowers are similar to the type, but are a bit larger, light pink in colour, a reduced signal, and have wider falls.
The first pink variety was developed in Japan in 1710-1713. 'Rose Queen' is one of the oldest registered American ensatas. It was developed in the USA in 1900's to early 1910's by the Society for Japanese Irises, and first commercially introduced in 1915.
Note: The website Paghat's Garden gives much dubious information about this iris. It is not a new variety, it is not the first 'true pink' variety, nor is it is a laevigata. She states it probably originated from wild stock in Eastern Siberia. This information appears unique to her website, and I am unable to assess the validity of this statement.
On Distribution:
Altitude: In China it occurs at altitudes of 400-1700m, according to the Flora of China (FoC). Nonetheless, earlier reports of this species further to the south, not reported in the FoC, show this species growing at higher altitudes, to 1950m. Furthermore, it has been recorded growing at lower altitudes to the north; from 300m in Korea, and from 50m in Primorsky Krai, Russia.
Native:
China: According to the FoC it is native to (northern) Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning (these three provinces make up Manchuria), and also Shandong and Zhejiang. Note that the type was originally collected at 1950m in Hubei province in 1907. Additionally the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has grown plants collected near Maijiqu, in Tianshui, Gansu, in 2002, and has plants collected in Xinjiang near Turpan, at the edge of Gobi Desert, in 1987; the Phanerogamic Botanical Collection of Sweden has two herbarium samples of plants, one also collected in Gansu, in 1931, in the coniferous woodlands of the Qilian mountains, and in Xinjiang in 1933 on Qarangghu-tagh Mt., bordering Tibet in the central Kunlun Mt.s, directly due south of Hotan (Khotan) City; lastly, the herbarium of Vienna has records of samples collected in Shanxi (somewhere in the 'Sui Tau highlands near Xinglingxian'?) in 1916, and in northern Fujian/southern Jiangxi on Donghuaxian mountain between Shicheng and Ninghua. Japan: It occurs naturally on the islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu.
South Korea: It has been found to grow in the provinces of Busan (Geumjeong-gu), Chungcheongnam (Taean-gun), Gangwon (Hoengseong-gun, Pyeongchang-gun, Yeongwol-gun), Gyeonggi, Gyeongsangbuk (Gunwi-gun), Gyeongsangnam (Hapcheon-gun, Sancheong-gun), Jeju Island (Jeju-si, Namjeju-gun, Seogwipo-si), Kyongsangpuk (Ulnung-gun (W of Jo-dong [Geodong])), Seoul (Nowon-gu)
North Korea: I have seen no direct evidence of this iris occurring here, but it seems very probable.
Mongolia: Not known to occur here. FloraGREIF has no record of it in Mongolia.
Russia: Rare or endangered in Russia; regions with an asterisk ('*') are listed in the various Red Data Books as having a threatened population of the Iris. It occurs naturally on Sakhalin*, the Kuril Islands (Kunashir, possibly also Shikotan), Primorsky Krai* (sighted reasonably often around Vladivostok), Amur Oblast, Jewish Autonomous Region*, Khabarovsk Krai*, Zabaykalsky Krai (both the Aga Buryat and Chita regions), Buryatia, Irkutsk Oblast, Yakutia/Sakha Republic*, Novosibirsk Oblast, Omsk Oblast, Tuva Republic, and the Altai Republic. Protected populations grow in Kurilsky Zapovednik. See some in situ pictures of the species growing in the south of the Primorsky Krai here or here.
Kazakhstan: Eastern Kazakhstan. The great botanist Regel in 1877 recorded plants as having been collected 'between Kutentass and Küsk'; it is unclear where exactly that was, but it might be near the northern Kazakh city of Kostanay.
India: Occurs in the greater Assam region according to the 2004 article 'Geographical distribution of Iridaceae in India' by Bahali et al.
Pakistan: There is a single strange collection of plant material from at 2225m elevation near Thorgu, in the Skardu District of Baltistan in the western Kashmir.
Not Native:
Taiwan: Garden escapes may sometimes occur here, although I have no direct evidence for this; the species and its cultivars are commonly cultivated in Taiwan.
USA: Scattered populations have naturalized in Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania (only in Philadelphia and Buck counties), and Vermont (only in Windham county).
Canada: This species has naturalized in Ontario.
UK: According to Stace et al. [1995] it is a 'persistent survivor' in the swamps of western Kent; this statement is now outdated and needs to be clarified somewhat, as the west Kent population is not recorded in the 2000's. A decade previously there was another population in north central Kent near the Thames estuary, but this had disappeared by the 1990's. In the 2000's yet another observation of naturalized plants has been made, comparatively distantly, near Birmingham. This information was from the BSBI distributional record map accessed via their website, but the same organisation has supplied additional yet varying data to the GBIF. There was an observation of the species growing in the Dartford Heath in the far northwest corner of Kent in 1985. A Surrey population was recorded in 1987 near the village of Cranleigh, and in 1999 another observation was logged 12km to the northeast, near the village of Dorking.
Other: It may also have naturalised in Belgium, Guadeloupe and/or Martinique. Reports of plants growing near Stockholm, Sweden (Bergianska Trädgården) are not of naturalized plants.
Chorological Discussion: Note that the distribution given above is much more expansive to the north and south than usually reported. In the case of Russia this may be due to under-reporting or they may constitute very rare vestige populations; it is notable that for decades the only wild types from Russia available in Russia were from the Primorsky region (the far southeast), despite much effort being spent in trying to create more hardy cultivars (i.e. plants from Yakutia must have been unknown or exceedingly rare). There is furthermore a historic precedent in Russia of misidentifying wild I. laevigata as I. ensata. The collections from the southern and western provinces of China may in fact be misidentifications, they may be naturalized or cultivated populations, but they might very well be native; the Xinjiang and Gansu collections are from relatively remote and 'natural' areas; the reports of this iris in Assam also lend weight to this possibility. If the Flora of China considers the Zhejiang population native, there is a good incentive for considering the Fujian/Jiangxi collection native, or visa versa. It is notable that the distribution given in the FoC presents 5 provinces, none of which are reflected in the collection data of the GBIF, and the GBIF presents a number of provinces never even mentioned in the FoC. It could be the case that these tiny refuge populations in eastern Siberia, Kazakhstan, Assam, Kashmir, and southern and western China all represent vestiges of ancient ornamental cultivation; considering this species has been popularly cultivated for at least 500 years in the region to the east, it doesn't seem unjustified to image plants moving west and southward as gifts or in the personal collection of some Chinese official sent out west.
