Another one of the Horses of Honor, on display throughout the city, each horse dedicated to the memory of a specific Chicago Police Officer who gave his life in the line of duty.
This particular horse is dedicated to Chicago Police Officer John C. Knight., Star #5119, assigned to the 22nd District Tactical Unit.
On January 9, 1999, Officer Knight and his partner, Officer James Butleer, spotted a stolen car with two occupants. After a brief pursuit, the stolen car crashed into another car at 99th and Parnell, and the two offenders bailed out. One of the offenders opened fire with a laser-sighted automatic handgun, firing on the officers who were still in the process of exiting their squad car. Officer Knight was hit three times, and Officer Butler was hit once during the gun battle that ensued.
The offender had also been injured and was eventually captured by officers who followed his blood trail in the snow.
He was tried and convicted, and is serving life without parole.
Officer Knight was buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and three children.
