It's time for the Iowa State Fair! (Not to be confused with cow tipping.)

Also, Madison came home for a moment. She'll be off again before the week is over. So don't forget to hug them while you can, cause it might be awhile before you can do it again.

If I were to compare my family to the great TV show Gilligan's Island, I of course would be the Skipper, Deborah would be the beautiful Mary Ann, Ian would play the role of the Professor, and lastly, Ms. Madi would be the Movie Star. But if you put us all together, we become Gilligan. Unfortunately, there are no millionaires to play Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Howell.

The Midway would not be complete with out a visit to the Tilt-a-Whirl.

Here's the history of the ride according to Wikipedia:

Tilt-A-Whirl is one of the best-known flat rides, designed for commercial use at amusement parks, fairs and carnivals in which it is commonly found. The rides are manufactured by Sellner Manufacturing of Faribault, Minnesota. The ride is commonly known for making riders experience nausea. (no kidding!)

Herbert Sellner, a woodworker and maker of water slides, invented the Tilt-A-Whirl in 1926, at his Faribault, Minnesota, home. Over the next year, the first 14 Tilt-A-Whirls were built in Herbert's basement and yard. In 1927, Sellner Manufacturing opened its factory in Faribault, and the ride debuted that year at the Minnesota State Fair.

Family legend states that Herbert experimented with a chair placed on the kitchen table. Herbert's son Art sat in the chair, and Herbert rocked the table back and forth.

The earliest Tilt-A-Whirls were constructed of wood, powered by a gas motor, and featured nine cars. Today, the ride is constructed of steel, aluminum and fiberglass, is powered by seven small electric motors, and features seven cars.

Since 1927, Sellner has manufactured more than 1000 Tilt-A-Whirls. Some of the rides produced in the 1940s and 1950s are still in operation. The rides were originally designed and built at the factory in Faribault, Minnesota. In January 2011 the company was purchased by Larson International, Inc. of Plainview, Texas.

A new Tilt-A-Whirl costs approximately USD $300,000 to purchase.

The oldest currently operating Tilt-A-Whirl is a 1927 model, still traveling with Tom Evans United Shows in the midwest. Between 600 and 700 Tilt-A-Whirls are still in operation.

It's not the cleanest HDR, but it does give you an idea of the throngs of people that attend the Iowa State Fair. In the far distance you can see the Des Moines Skyline.

According to Wikipedia: The Fairgrounds comprises over 445 acres (1.80 km2), of which 160 acres (0.65 km2) are campsites. Annual attractions include the world famous Butter Cow sculpted by Iowan Sarah Pratt, the 10 acre Midway and its double Ferris wheel, one of the world's largest livestock shows, the country's largest state fair foods department (more than 900 classes), the state's largest arts show and over 600 exhibitors and more than 50 foods on-a-stick!

The Iowa State Fair places a great deal of emphasis on the agricultural presence in the state. To that end, there are many livestock shows and sales. These include contests for the biggest animals: the Big Boar, the Big Ram, the Super Bull, the Largest Rabbit and the Heaviest Pigeon. There are also livestock shows for sheep, swine, beef and dairy cattle, horses, goats, llamas, rabbits and pigeons, as well as cat and dog shows.

Whether you are looking for treats for your taste buds, or your other four senses, the Midway is a great place to visit during the Iowa State Fair.

One of the most iconic parts of a Midway is its carousel. (From Wikipedia) A carousel (from French carrousel, from Italian carosello), or merry-go-round, is an amusement ride consisting of a rotating circular platform with seats for riders. The "seats" are traditionally in the form of rows of wooden horses or other animals mounted on posts, many of which are moved up and down via gearwork to simulate galloping, to the accompaniment of looped circus music. This leads to one of the alternative names, the galloper. Other popular names are roundabout and flying horses.

Little known fact about Carousels - In the UK and Europe, merry-go-rounds (as they are most often referred to in those countries) usually turn clockwise (see photograph at top), while in North America, carousels typically go anti-clockwise (or "counter-clockwise") - looked on from above. One mounts a real horse by lifting one's right leg over the animal's back as it stands with its head towards one's left (the horse's left side is called its "near" side). Likewise for a carousel that turns anti-clockwise: one stands on the near side of the horse to mount (towards the center of the carousel, not on its outer edge). One possible reason for carousels in the USA turning anti-clockwise may be so that the rider can use their right hand to catch a brass ring.

The slogan of the Iowa State Fair is, "Nothing Compares". That is an understatement in just about every category you can imagine. The food, music, livestock shows, midway rides and more.

This was shot at the end of a Sunday night. The Midway was clearing out, and the people were grabbing their last snacks for the ride home.

From Wikipedia:

The Fairgrounds comprises over 445 acres (1.80 km2), of which 160 acres (0.65 km2) are campsites. Annual attractions include the world famous Butter Cow sculpted by Iowan Sarah Pratt, the 10 acre Midway and its double Ferris wheel, one of the world's largest livestock shows, the country's largest state fair foods department (more than 900 classes), the state's largest arts show and over 600 exhibitors and more than 50 foods on-a-stick![2]

There are also livestock shows for sheep, swine, beef and dairy cattle, horses, goats, llamas, rabbits and pigeons, as well as cat and dog shows.

Additionally, the Fair is home to several zany contests including pigeon rolling, rooster crowing, wood chopping, pie eating, monster arm wrestling, outhouse races, cow chip throwing and tall corn. It also hosts the world's only Lawn Chair Toss competition.

July 29 - The farmer and his daughter, a 25-foot tall -- 30,000-pound -- statue, are visiting the Iowa State Fairgrounds. This statue is based on “American Gothic,” Grant Wood’s painting. Sculptor J. Seward Johnson’s included this piece in his “Icons Revisited” project, in which he takes familiar images and expands them to a grand scale. Currently his works are shared throughout the world.

This public piece of art is a reminder of our country’s agricultural heritage. "God Bless America” has already traveled to Chicago, Florida, Arizona and New York. The difference between this piece and the original painting is the suitcases at their feet. One would think the farmer and his daughter are planning to travel, but instead, the suitcases represent outsourcing and the stickers display the names of places where American jobs have been lost to overseas producers.

Welcome to the Iowa State Fair! To learn more about this amazing artist, visit the Seward Johnson Website, created by the Sculpture Foundation.

Followup: And where did the statue go, after the Fair? What an interesting article. Wish I could have seen this traveling down the road! www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2014/09/03/american-...

July 30 - Harold has visited the Iowa State Fairgrounds! What an amazing garden! A must see at this year's fair! Polk County Master Gardener's....you are to be commended for featuring children's literature in your lovely garden!

Part of the Iowa State Fair are dog shows including this little guy. He was able to clear a 58 inch bar on his second try. The best part of the story is that this half-collie half-cattle dog was picked up by the show from a local animal shelter.

There are many great family pets that can be found at your local rescue shelter and/or pound. If you are considering a new addition to your family, please check there first.

Let's go to the Fair - the Iowa State Fair!

One of the more popular attractions at the 2011 Midway was the "Drop Zone". The yellowish blog you see is actually the people. They drop really fast at the top and then abruptly slow down near the bottom. The exposure of 6 seconds covered the time it took for the ride to end so there is some residual light from the people and their chairs.

This was a fun carnival ride to shoot.

These two parents were waiting for their son to disembark from a mid-way ride. It was great to find something to anchor this shot that wasn't moving. My friend Chris and I walked the Midway at the Iowa State Fair and got some fun shots of the rides. I think this was both our favorites.

Sinéad O'Connor (1966-2023) was an Irish singer and musician. Her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, was released in 1987 and charted internationally. Her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got received glowing reviews upon release and became her biggest success, selling over seven million copies worldwide. Its lead single, Nothing Compares 2 U (written by Prince), was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.

In 1992, O'Connor appeared on late-night television programme Saturday Night Live as a musical guest. She sang an a cappella version of Bob Marley's 1976 song War, which she intended as a protest against the Catholic Church's sexual abuse of children and its continued cover-up, referring to child abuse rather than racism. She then presented a photo of Pope John Paul II to the camera while singing the word “evil”, after which she tore the photo into pieces, said “Fight the real enemy”, and threw the pieces towards the camera. The incident occurred nine years before John Paul II acknowledged the sexual abuse within the Church.

In a 2002 interview with Salon, when asked if she would change anything about the Saturday Night Live appearance, O'Connor replied, “Hell, no!”

In her 2021 book Rememberings, O'Connor said of the incident: “Everyone wants a pop star, see? But I am a protest singer. I just had stuff to get off my chest. I had no desire for fame”. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinéad_O'Connor
