In jazz and blues, a blue note is a note sung or played at a slightly lower pitch than that of the major scale for expressive purposes. Typically the alteration is a semitone or less, but this varies among performers and genres.
"Like the blues in general, the blue notes can mean many things. One quality that they all have in common, however, is that they are flatter than one would expect, classically speaking. But this flatness may take several forms. On the one hand, it may be a microtonal affair of a quarter-tone or so. Here one may speak of neutral intervals, neither major nor minor. On the other hand, the flattening may be by a full semitone--as it must be, of course, on keyboard instruments. It may involve a glide, either upward or downward. Again, this may be a microtonal, almost imperceptible affair, or it may be a slur between notes a semitone apart, so that there is actually not one blue note but two. A blue note may even be marked by a microtonal shake of a kind common in Oriental music. The degrees of the mode treated in this way are, in order of frequency, the third, seventh, fifth, and sixth."
Blue notes are used in many blues songs, in jazz, and in conventional popular songs with a "blue" feeling, such as Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather." Blue notes are also prevalent in English folk music. Bent or "blue notes", called in Ireland "long notes", play a vital part in Irish music.

Shamed I am but here to see is the mark I left when I dragged my finger over the 'E' on the head of my neglected bass; for shame!

A bit of fun last night around midnight. I had an idea to create a multiple image composite, of our campsite in the High Country. The image consists of 22 separately lit and captured frames, so lots and lots or running back and forth to the camera on the tripod, and also getting into position to light all the different scenes in the frame. It's not perfect, although I love how it's turned out. The shot of the stars was the only 30 second exposure, the rest were just three seconds.
All that was left at the end was to tidy up all the tinnies
A great few nights had by all.
Shot with Canon 1DX2 17-40L (30 sec for the stars)
Lighting was a mixture, of ambient and AD200Pro strobe @ 1/4 power, and full power for the trees.
today is my ten year wedding anniversary. 16 years together. i can't believe it has been that long. although when i look in the mirror, i realize it must be. we have done so many things together. marriage is hard. and while i sometimes think that men and women living together is some sort of cruel joke, i love it. the comfort of really knowing someone, feeling that body next to you in bed at night and knowing there is someone else to go through everything with you. also having someone to be really honest with you about things you need to change. they help you evolve and vice versa.
my husband works really hard for anna and me. tells me that without us, he would be nothing. he leaves me lipstick notes like the one in this photo on just regular days... i love him so much and while we have had many ups and downs, i want to always strive to make it better. he is a good man and i am a lucky girl.
This mezzanine floor at Waterloo must be a fairly recent introduction. I dunno, what they'll do to squeeze a bit more rental income and retail floorspace out of our London termini. You know the sort of thing. All very "Euro", with tables outside, menus on blackboards, little trees in "planters", modish coffee shops, saxophone tootlings from concealed speakers. Not the place for a serious bit of spotting and I can't imagine a 70s-style gricer, with his Adidas bag, bobble hat, notebooks and variously coloured ballpoints being very welcome up here. A quick Flickr search came up with photographs from as late as 2009 in which the structure is absent. Distressingly, quite a lot of photos have already appeared showing the bird's eye view of the concourse, so I won't add to their number for now. I think that's a scrunch dry on the left. I expect the married men among my readers will admit to having picked up a rudimentary understanding of this macabre coiffuring lingo from their wives.
