I remember concluding in an undergraduate essay about 45 years ago that the problem of homelessness would not be solved without a revolution. Some would say that it took a pandemic, though I think homelessness is beginning to return to pre-Covid levels.

Here in the UK change happens more gradually, and here are some examples: -

*Traffic in Towns led to a rethink about private v public transport in urban areas (though traffic problems have worsened since its publication).

*No Way to the Airport did not halt airport construction or slow the increase in air travel, though eventually we altered the decision-making process.

*The House of Lords still exists and, although the Blair government tried to reform it, there are still peers who are there simply because they were born into a wealthy, landowning family.

*Local government was reformed, though it still features some of the structures and systems that led to the demand for reform.

*John Bercow tried to modernise not only the role of the Speaker but the House of Commons over which he presided, though the institution is essentially the same as before.

We're good at tinkering. It's a slow process. We have to be patient. Fortunately, fewer people die than during a conventional revolution.
