Northern Lights in Yellowknife, Sep 2015

Canada is so vast with many remote lakes

The Cree Indians held that the Aurora was part of life's circle and were the spirits of the dead who remained in the sky but apart from their loved ones.

The Cree believed that the lights were spirits of these departed friends and relatives trying to communicate with those they had left behind on earth.

Another image of my favourite phenomenon: the northern lights.

This time only a short distance from the house we stayed in. You do not always need to go far in search of the northern lights and given temperatures below minus 30 Celcius, it is great to do it nearby to warm up in between shots!

My husband snapped this last night of me sitting on the bench at North Point waiting for the Northern Lights to come out. All we seen was this for a hour so we went home. But it was awesome to just watch this.

Night at it's best. Almost full moon and northernlights, no talk about the darkness of the night.

Going to bed last night around 10 I thought I could see the lights to the north. We got in the jeep and went out north to the turn around and got 4 stunning shots till the clouds came in and covered the sky.

This location doesn't need any introduction I guess! :-)

One of the most beautiful place on Earth...

...and one of the most beautiful show on Earth.

Perfect reflection in the water of Eklutna Tailrace, AK. This was shot on the night of April 24th

Now that I'm starting to feel a little better from jet lag I feel like editing a little bit more. We had this incredible display burst out in front of us the other night. It's absolutely incredible seeing the entire sky covered in aurora. This is actually a single from from a timelapse so....at some point I'll have that out for your viewing pleasure. Dixie J. Lots of people everywhere for the Northern Lights. We just didn't have clear skies while we were out. I gave up 11:45 and went home A friend of mine stayed here till 1am. He said the clouds lifted around 12:30 and he took a beautiful shot. Maybe next time. Getting to old to stay up so late. But this is what I got.

Not as strong as predicted but worth getting up at 1 am lol going to be a long day

Aurora Borealis surrounding the city

First decent ones from this season. Few previous attemps were not a success, but last night, yeehaaa!

A short time-lapse from Thanksgiving weekend. Isle Lake

Taken in the north Atlantic about 150 miles south west of Iceland on board the cruise ship Ambience. Captain Egel very kindly switched off the deck lights to allow these phots to be taken.

The original northern lights film image taken in the March 2001 (www.flickr.com/photos/79387036@N07/30678110765) is considerably enhanced in this post-processed revision to bring out the colors and by increasing contrast. The original image is from a negative (Etkapress with iso=640) that was scanned at 7200 dpi without modification.

Green aurora is common at high latitudes (Fairbanks, Alaska is 64N). So when other colors appeared, I took a roll of exposures in a matter of minutes. In the age of film, the spectrum of color was not always captured or developed accurately. In this revision, I could see yellow and pink which were associated with only high solar activity as they are simply a mixture of red with green or blue.

Amazing to see the northern lights so high in the sky right here at home.
