We also visited Delapré Abbey, a few miles outside Northampton. It was founded as a Cluniac nunnery in the 12th century and in its extensive grounds there is an Eleanor Cross commemorating the wife of Edward !, whose body rested there on its journey to London. Also in the grounds the Battle of Northampton was fought in 1460. After the Dissolution it became a private house, owned by the Tate and then Bouverie families, fell into disuse and was bought by the county council, which housed its Record Office there. Considerable efforts (and funds) have gone into restoring the house and its outbuildings, and to finding appropriate furnishings, so it can be a visitor attraction.
The Guildhall, designed by Edward Godwin and opened in 1864. In style it reminded me very much of the Royal Courts of Justice in London, begun in 1862, though not completed until 1882, and designed by George Street. This imposing figure is Justice, created with the others by Richard Lockwood Boulton, who worked with Sir George Gilbert Scott on the cathedrals at Worcester, Hereford and Lichfield.

Saw many more people out walking on this day than I’d have seen walking in the Peak District. Staying close to home seems to be congregating walkers in local parks and pathways
Three more scenes from a Balloon adventure in May 2017 which had been given to me for a big birthday over two years earlier. This was my thirteenth attempt! The flight was an evening take off from Hanging Haughton and we landed on the south side of Northampton on a school playing field
