Trondheim, Norway was founded by the Vikings in the 10th century. It is one of the most historically significant cities in Norway. The city center is Bakklandet, which has been beautifully preserved since it was first settled in the early 17th century.
The colorful wharves of Bakklandet have a long history as storage facilities for cargo that was brought in by ships from all over Europe. They were also used as defensive positions during enemy attacks. The oldest wharves were built around 1700 on the banks of the River Nidelva. Some were lost in fires but a few of the original wooden buildings remain today. Many of these historic structures have been converted to private homes.
* This was taken from the same road on Exmoor as the image I posted two shots back in the stream . This time you are looking down on the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth . You can see Lynton clearly at the top of the cliff. Lynmouth is 500 foot below at the foot of the cliff ,you can just make out a little of the harbour . The deep blue sea really sets them off well I think.
Having two places separated by a deep steep cliff presented difficulties in transporting goods and people between the two settlements . The clever Victorians solved this by building the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway a water-powered funicular in 1890 . This is the longest and oldest water powered funicular railway in the world . It's still functioning and it's a great ride.
THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT TO MY STREAM.
I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD NOT FAVE A PHOTO WITHOUT ALSO LEAVING A COMMENT .
Tromsø is north of the Arctic Circle but has a subpolar oceanic climate with mild winters and cool summers due to the Gulf Stream. It is sheltered from severe Atlantic storms by a range of mountains to the west.
Glacial ice floes originating from Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon float into the North Atlantic where they are returned onto the black volcanic beach.
Now where is my Gin?
Geiranger is a village in western Norway, at the head of Geirangerfjord. Part of the steep Trollstigen mountain road weaves through the village, connecting to Flydalsjuvet lookout, which overlooks the fjord.
The deep blue UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord is surrounded by majestic mountain peaks, wild waterfalls and lush vegetation. The area’s unique topography was created during a succession of ice ages, when glaciers carved out deep fjords and shaped the high mountains.
The surreal beauty of Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Bay will never let you lose once you've spent an evening, night and sunrise by its freezing shores :)
"Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice."

Another capture of a wonderful sunrise at Jokulsarlon glacier bay in Southeast Iceland. It is those moments of special light when the "natural diamonds" are looking most splendid.
Jokulsarlon glacier bay with its black volcanic beach as final resting place for countless glacial ice floes from Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon.
Happy Textural Tuesday!
Jokulsarlon glacier bay with Diamond beach during a very early sunrise, shot in LE and cranked up for Sliders Sunday.
Happy Sliders Sunday everyone!
Iceland's East coast at Njardvikurskridur between Hofn and Djupivogur: black volcanic beach again, gentle slopes and a fantastic, blue sea and in the distance the first East fjord with its snowy mountains.
Iceland's East coast is somewhat mellower in its Southeastern part before one gets to the proper Eastfjords. Here a coastal stretch near Djupivogur where the waves are contrasted by black volcanic beach and brown rolling hills. I just loved the mood of the scene. In the background there is the first of a number of mountain ranges that form the Eastern fjords.
Sunrise at Diamond Beach where the glacial ice floes from Jokulsarlon Glacier Lake end up in the North Atlantic which brutal waves return them onto the black volcanic beach.
Today's another day with scorching hot temperatures in Mid-September!! So let me offer some welcome refreshment to all of us who are suffering from the heat :)

more impressions of a magic early sunrise at Diamond Beach receiving all the ice floes from Jokulsarlon glacier lake.
Glacial ice floes on "Diamond Beach" where Jokulsarlon glacier bay discharges the melting "jewels" into the North Atlantic during a late sunset.
the final stage of the grand journey of water from rain to snow to glacial ice and now returning to the sea ... at Jokulsarlon glacier bay in Southeast Iceland.
I just realised how much I miss these coastal scenarios since it is aready several month since we were there. Once one has seen these beautiful pristine and ragged coastal stretches they will never get out of ones mind again.
More impressions from our roundtrip around Iceland, here in its Northern regions leaving Borgarfjordur Eystri towards the Central-North Highlands.
A stretch of North Iceland's coastline with remarkable features. The sense of vastness and solitude is almost overwhelming when you stand there.
"Green, how I want you green.
Green wind. Green branches.
The ship out on the sea
and the horse on the mountain.
With the shade around her waist
she dreams on her balcony,
green flesh, her hair green,
with eyes of cold silver.
Green, how I want you green.
Under the gypsy moon,
all things are watching her
and she cannot see them. ..."

"Verde que te quiero verde.
Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre la mar
y el caballo en la montaña.
Con la sombra en la cintura
ella sueña en su baranda,
verde carne, pelo verde,
con ojos de fría plata.
Verde que te quiero verde.
Bajo la luna gitana,
las cosas la están mirando
y ella no puede mirarlas. ..."

Aurora Borealis show over Koppangen Bay in the Arctic region of Norway during low tide.
The high cliffs of Westray's Western coastline offer gorgeous views over the North Atlantic around the Orkney isles and on good days the sight of three other Orkney islands. These cows certainly have such a beautiful place to graze on and spend the summer!
Happy Furry Friday!
Iceland's Northfjords are quite a sight to behold with a very varied coastline, costal lagoons, bridges and causeways stretching over fjords like here at Siglufjordur.
Joekulsarlon glacier bay in Southeast Iceland on an extremely cold and breezy yet totally glorious winter day
I have been comparing the different light moods of Jokulsarlon glacier bay as I shot them during our diverse journeys there and it is absolutely amazing how different this place may look.
Siglufjordur in North Iceland, a place that rings solitude and isolation, but also natural beauty and man's perseverance and social solidarity in order to get through those long winters here. This image was captured in May, so you get an idea what it must be like in real winter :)
Joekulsarlon glacier bay where ice floes of the Svinafellsjoekull glacier end up being washed into the North Atlantic and the ocean with its surf returning them to that black volcanic beach. A spectacle one has to see for themselves to believe and to witness one of the great wonders of the "life circle of water" above the Arctic Circle.
A moment during our last day of round trip around Iceland, when we left Snaefellsnes National Park with its outlandish volcanic landscapes and endless hrauns (lava fields) to see a real village again.

a Spring sunset at Diamond beach where the glacial ice floes from Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon drift into the North Atlantic, often resting on the black volcanic beach.
Icelandic North fjord perspectives in Spring. I loved the mix of winter scenarios in all higher parts and the signs of Spring in the low lands and by the coast clashing and showing the battle of seasons.
a panoramic view from the root of one fjord gazing over to the next one in an amazing array of fjords in Iceland's Westfjords.
The Northeastern coastline of Westray, Orkney isles, is a paradise for bird watcher thanks to its steep and rugged cliffs which offer perfect conditions for sea birds to nest here. In order to get to the shore line though, one has to climb several fences since this is all pasture territory. The public pathway offers ladders to do so and once one has finally managed to get beyond, cows, sheep and fences, a magical coast awaits exploration :)
Happy Fence Friday!
