D36 hustles past the intermediates at 150.9 on the approach to the Lafayette District high iron in Bement. Today's train is led by straight NS -2s 3479 and 3517. These intermediates are popular with fans due to their easy access and spacing in the chase cadence. I found them awkward to shoot being so close to the crossing. But that is because of my own defects as a photographer. This was my best attempt.

This is of course, the former Wabash Chicago main. In 1990, the top end was lopped off between Gibson City and Manhattan. GC to Risk was sold to the Bloomer Shippers Connecting Railroad. The remaining piece of the was grafted with the NKP, creating a glorified branchline. The CTC south of GC remains and it is quite overkill for the remaining traffic. North of Lodge, only the control points have searchlights, with the intermediates varying in manufacturer and year. South of Lodge, I believe all the intermediates are searchlights, if my count of three is correct.

A light drizzle falls as 288 waits in Roanoke after shoving back over three miles due to a tonnage issue. The issue was resolved in a typical railroad mannor with several calls to upper management who deemed the tonnage issue to not be an issue and the train should contiune on without dropping cars. Understandably the crew was not impressed, especially the conductor who was forced to ride the shove in the rain and then walk their lengthy train back to the head end. After waiting for dispatch, they were finally back underway.

I never did get this guys symbol, but judging by the length & cargo, I'm guessing it was 109. If so, NS 109 speeds down the AGS North as it heads for Irondale. Leading the way was a nice surprise in NS 7297, one of the few SD70ACUs still in road service. To think NS bought all of those SD90MACs to rebuild into these in 2015, only to have most of them parked &/or sold within 5 years of being rebuilt, with most of the remaining ones being held in pusher service in Pennsylvania. 7-26-22

Back in 2001 Norfolk Southern Train #145, laden with Kansas City bound priority auto parts, is heading westward at Buffalo, IL on the old Wabash Railroad’s Detroit to Kansas City main line. The lead locomotive model, a General Electric C39-8, was nicknamed a “toaster” by some due to the configuration of the long hood.

Led by a trio of high-nose EMDs, Norfolk Southern train 180 curves through Tateville, Kentucky, on August 23, 1992. The train is northbound, passing through a deep cut of the Southern Railway’s upgraded “Rathole” line between Cincinnati and Chattanooga. NS EMD GP50 No. 7060 leads the train operating long-hood forward, as CNO&TP (Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific Railway) and Southern intended.

Good company and beautiful weather combined for a great day. Although rail traffic was very slow there were things of interest to be seen; one hundred black vultures greeted us at Big Sandy Tunnel #7, a separated coal train with a conductor getting a lot of practice setting and releasing hand brakes, a grumpy train master, a rail grinder in action, two heritage units and this sunset.

NS 1055 leads empty coal train NS 591 west through the small town of Summerhill, PA on a warm June afternoon. The PRR signals that once stood here have been taken out since June of 2019.
