Southwest Arizona, USA
Hmm! youtu.be/WrMGGouem3c?si=kOne2oj9QtydEdUN
1. Size: Mearns Coyote is slightly larger than the common coyote, with a body length ranging from 30 to 40 inches.
2. Coat Color: Look for a distinctive coloration that combines grayish-brown with reddish and cream hues, particularly on the face and legs.
3. Facial Features: Notice the prominent, elongated snout and large ears; the muzzle appears more robust compared to other coyote subspecies.
4. Tail: The tail is bushy with a black tip; it often hangs low when the coyote is moving.
5. Habitat: Typically found in mountainous areas and forests, especially in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.
6. Vocalization: Listen for unique howls and yips that are characteristic of the species, different from those of other canids.
7. Behavior: Mearns Coyotes are relatively solitary or found in small family groups, often exhibiting stealthy hunting practices.
Agave Americana.
The common name "century plant" stems from its nature of flowering only once at the end of its long life. After flowering, the plant dies.
Although it is called the century plant, it typically lives only 10 to 30 years. This one is 22 years old.
It has a spread around 1.8–3.0 m (6–10 ft) with gray-green-blue leaves measuring 0.9–1.5 m (3–5 ft) in length, each with a prickly margin and a heavy spike at the tip that can pierce deeply.
Towards the end of its life, the plant produces a tall, branched stalk adorned with yellow blossoms, which can reach a height of 8–9 m (25–30 ft). Harris hawks and Caracara falcons perch in numbers and screech at the top of their lungs.
Agave americana has various uses starting in pre-Columbian Mexico. If the flower stem is cut before flowering, a sweet liquid known as aguamiel ('honey water') can be collected from the plant's hollowed heart. This liquid can be fermented to produce the alcoholic drink called pulque or octli.
Agave americana can cause severe allergic dermatitis.
