You can't; that's how.

Dear good people of Flickrland! I'm super excited ~and honored~ that a book I made, "one in eight." is a People's Choice Award nominee-finalist in the Documentary category for Blurb's Photo Book Now contest. There are lots of great books in four different categories: Documentary, Travel, Fine Art & Student. I hope you'll consider voting for my book (look for the all-pink cover!) or any of the other wonderful books in any of the categories. (You are allowed one vote in each category.) Thanks so much, and all the best to all of the contestants!

To make it a wee bit easier to cast your vote, here's a direct link to the PBN Documentary category finalists:

(You do have to 'create an account' by giving them an email address, and for that extra step I do apologize... But I hope it won't deter you from voting!)

The architecture in China is unique. Old villages, pavilions, monasteries and small palaces.

In the old villages people are still using the open streams to wash clothes and rice etc.

1.What is your most impression about this Art event?

你对这次大赛最大的感想是什么?

The event will show different sides of China today.

I find it great that you make an event in US and combine it with exhibitions in China.

An event can make a better understanding between nations and making it open for everyone to participate is a great.

I find it interesting to see all kind of Chinese art and photos from places I haven’t visited yet.

2.What do you want to express in your artworks?

你在作品中想要表达什么?

The rural china and the nature, scenery and historical.

1.If you are the winner of the Award, what would you like to say?

如果你得到大奖,你最想说的是什么?

I don’t travel to China thinking about to take a photo for a competition.

I choose my destinations depending on the season. I like the nature and its different colors and found that China got it all.

I was invited to join the event.

I haven’t contributed to win a competition but with a few photos I wanted to show some parts of China today.

All contributors are winners however if I have a photo which can impress or show some interesting scenes from the daily life it will please me.

Thanks for the invitation.

Please attach photo of yourself and brief introduction: (will be used at ceremony)

I’m Danish and 57 years old. After my early retirement caused by degenerative joint disease I moved from Denmark to Hong Kong 3½ years ago. It was possible for me as my wife is Chinese.

The climate in Hong Kong is better for me (except the pollution). I have always been interested in photography but never got the time.

Photography is now my passion and I find it gives me a lot of contacts not only in Hong Kong but all over the world. It forces me to go out even I feel pain.

Travelling in China is also hard for me, but I find it worth to do it. My first trip to China was 25 years ago. My wife and I travelled from Hong Kong to Beijing by train and made stops several places during the trip. I have since visited China several times.

My photos from Hong Kong are most from the unknown green Hong Kong (also unknown to many local people). To me it’s important that we keep the globe green. I hope through my photos to show what’s hiding behind the bushes.

China has so many unique places and the scenery is amazing. The historical buildings are unique too. There are still many places in China I want to visit (and go back to) and I hope I’ll be able to do it.

Oscars 2021 Best Picture Nominee #1: Promising Young Woman

Once again, I've decided to make all the Best Picture nominees in LEGO! This time, I'll post one a day rather than last year's more rushed schedule, but that also means I actually haven't seen all of them yet... (I have a week, okay?) And since I haven't seen them all, that also means that these really are posted in no particular order, unlike last year, which was definitely a ranking. I'll also come back and give opinions if I post ones before I've seen them, like today!

Here's the future home of my opinion of the movie:

So anyway, get ready for a week of posts!

Oscars 2021 Best Picture Nominee #3: Judas and the Black Messiah

Just watched this one last night, so I figured I'd post it today.

Boy, this movie was horrifying. The FBI was (is?) a fucking menace. A well crafted film regardless.

Oscars 2021 Best Picture Nominee #2: The Trial of the Chicago 7

I really liked this movie! Lots of great performances, well put together. I was warned the ending was cheesy, and I agree with that.. could've been a little more real, especially since it feels so relevant today. It's always a bit fun and terrifying to see how things haven't really changed over the years.

So, it's a dark and windy start to 2012 - and a dark and windy (as in curvy!) first upload from me for the beginning of the year.

This is probably the darkest shot I've done to date in terms of tonal balance, and for those of you familiar with the zone system pioneered by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer, I really wanted to reduce this image to a fairly basic construct by representing the wall and ground primarily in zones 1 and 2. Accordingly, whereas I often might strive to process highlights (particularly specular ones) closer to zone 9 or occasionally 10, here the whole scale was anchored much lower, hence nothing other than the brightest tones of the light hitting the top of the wall itself register between zones 7 and 8. Of course, unless you're viewing on a properly calibrated monitor (you are, right?), then much of this is meaningless...

This created a problem for me when preparing the JPEG for web display. I'm not sure whether there is some sort of algorithm that works on increasing overall contrast of photographs once uploaded, but certainly I see a noticeable difference between my web-hosted JPEGS and my original files unless I prepare a tailor-made JPEG, to resemble the original as closely as possible. Unless I'm losing the plot entirely (which admittedly is a distinct possibility), it seems to me that very dark/bright tones are more obviously affected. This is a complete pain in the proverbial when you primarily work in a mono colour-space where tones are so crucial. For this JPEG, I had to work on reducing the contrast below the horizon quite significantly in order to best replicate the original. I got pretty near in the end, but not without some effort - and I'd still feel much happier were I able to wave a proper print under your nose!

I appreciate there are all sorts of issues with internet colour-space, JPEG compression and suchlike (anybody else slave for hours on a shot only to see the web carve up your sky with banding?!), but does anyone have tried and tested workarounds or workflow solutions that they believe help and would care to share?

I shall be producing some... lighter shots as the year progresses (alongside some black ones!), but if I've whetted your appetite for The Dark Stuff then perhaps the question should be just how dark can you go and still get away with it? Well, maybe this example from one of my absolute favourite photographers on flickr, Jeff Gaydash, demonstrates better than I can express in words. Or, how about this one from the incredibly talented Joel Tjintjelaar. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite songs. After seeing this picture, it just started playing in my head. It's sung by Ephraim Lewis. It's light and jazzy. I can't help but sing it. The melody is just infectious. Have a great weekend my flickr friends!!!

DROWNING IN YOUR EYES

Feel the ground it's slipping away

Like a sigh that greets the close of day

Feel the waters' welcoming arms

Embrace me in the quiet calm

I can't hear what you say anymore

Just the sound of trees on the ocean floor

Irresistably drawn from the shore

I'm drowning in your eyes

I'm floating out to sea

Helpless on the restless tide

That flows between you and me

Moving slowly as if in a dream

The colours change from blue to green

All around me reflections of you

In forests deep I'm passing through

In the swell of the storm we're as one

We're dancing in the morning sun

Could it be that we've only just begun

Lying here beside you

Try to reach you but you're so far....

I'm drowning in your eyes...

I'm drowning in your eyes...

I'm drowning in your eyes...
