iss050e031939 (Jan. 13, 2017) --- NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough is photographed during a spacewalk in January 2017. During the nearly six hour spacewalk, the two astronauts successfully installed three new adapter plates and hooked up electrical connections for three of the six new lithium-ion batteries on the International Space Station. Astronauts were also able to accomplish several get-ahead tasks including stowing padded shields from Node 3 outside of the station to make room inside the airlock and taking photos to document hardware for future spacewalks.
Robber Fly - Efferia (Nerax) aestuans (female, ~20 mm)
Location: Durham NC (USA)
This fly perched on the outside of my kitchen window on a hot, sticky summer day--perfect robber fly weather. I took one cell phone shot inside, then took my camera outside to get some unobstructed images. I could just reach it by climbing up too high on a stepstool braced against the wall. The background (window) was far too dark. Aha, I had faced this issue before. I taped a piece of white paper on the *inside* of the window behind the fly and got a nice clean background. I had fun playing with different lighting. Adjacent images/observation highlights the prey, a (edit) flesh fly--Sarcophagidae.
Quoting the BugGuide identification section for Efferia aestuans:
- tibiae partially reddish
- mystax black
- ventral surface of abdomen with long white hairs
- female with long blade-like ovipositor
Single flash on a bracket highlighted structures on the thorax and hairs on the abdomen.

today is a no make up kind of day. ive been busting my butt with studying for midterms and ive had swollen lymph nodes for a few weeks and theve been getting bigger so i have to go get blood work done. my neck hurts and so does my head from all this school work. i need summer vacation and a little color to my cheeks.
These are the fantastic galls of the Spiny Leaf Gall Wasp (Diplolepis polita) growing on foliage of native California Wild Rose (Rosa californica, Rosaceae). They look like something from under the sea! I'm not sure of my ID, because these galls have much longer spines that the specimens I see at BugGuide, but I don't know what else they could be. These galls are caused by a different genus of Cynipid Gall Wasps (Cynipidae) than the ones that cause the galls on oak trees, and they seem to work exclusively with roses. I was excited to find these in the canyon, as I've never seen them up here in our mountains before. (San Marcos Pass, 30 May 2020)
