It's almost windless and an incoming tide and light cloud provide some morning shimmer at suburban Wynnum in Brisbane. Everyone was heading for coffee and not gazing at the view as it was a bit nippy out.

Another rainy and blustery afternoon during Autumn. Colors are nice and bright though. Time of the year to see the changing of seasons...

Two adult Black-crowned Night Herons posed for me the other day. Remarkable. Here's a tidbit from Cornell Labs I did not know - the Black-crowned Night Heron is the most widespread heron in the world. However, since they uh work at night, I rarely see them out in the open like this. It was a little nippy and gusty on this morning, thus the ruffled feathers.

Even if it was still a little nippy.

Autumn is the time of the year when leaves have started to fall. The colors are varied and brings different emotions...

I shot this in a parking lot of an apple orchard...it was definitely the apple of my eye!

Volvo and sportiness didn’t exactly go hand in hand 50 years ago, although one car with nippy ambitions stood out from the Swedish carmaker’s lineup. That car was the P1800, which came to change Volvo’s fortunes in the sports car arena after the resoundingly unsuccessful, fiberglass-bodied P1900. Volvo churned out 39,414 P1800s between 1961 and 1972, in three derivatives: P1800 S, 1800 S - S stood for Sverige or Sweden, and 1800 E - E stood for einspritzung, which means fuel injection in German.

Volvo P1800 Exterior

For the P1800’s exterior styling, Volvo went to Pelle Petterson, who was a sailor and yacht designer. He was also the son of Helmer Petterson, the man in charge of Volvo’s PV444 back in the 1940s.

In designing the P1800, Pelle worked under the supervision of Pietro Frua, whose studio was at the time a subsidiary of Carrozzeria Ghia. Hence the zesty Italian vibe oozed by the P1800’s body panels, in serious contrast with the Swedish design approach. What’s more, the floor pan of the P1800 was, in fact, a shorter version of the Volvo 121/122S, so the car had a shorter wheelbase as a result (245 centimeters or 8.03 feet). Overall length came in at 440 centimeters (14.4 feet)

As Jay Leno once said, this car could have easily been a Ferrari. It was rare, it was cool, it had just the right visual appeal with those round headlights, long hood, swooping rear side fins and then it had the fame, courtesy of a prolonged appearance in the British hit television series The Saint.

In the last year of its career, the P1800 was also offered in three-door estate form (call it a shooting brake if you wish).

Volvo fitted the P1800 with a then brand-new 1.8-liter (1778 cc), four-cylinder gasoline engine. The initial power rating was 100 horsepower, but over the years, the unit saw it bumped to 108, 115, and 120 horsepower. Come 1968, the P1800 got a 2.0-liter (1986 cc), carbureted engine with 118 horsepower followed by a fuel-injected derivative in 1969 - but power only went up to 120 horsepower.

The gearbox range included three options: a four-speed manual, a four-speed manual with overdrive, or a 3-speed automatic. In the front, the P1800 sported hydraulic disc brakes, while the rear had drums. Later models got discs on all four corners.

I was ready to post this last week, but the fence caused me to wait until Friday.

(BTW, I am getting a lot of hitches with Flickr lately. I comment and move on and then get a notice that my comment didn't post. I don't always back up to find it. Sorry about that.)

On almost any sort of extended trip to the cottage, there is one morning when sunrise looks appealing from the kitchen window of the cottage. I scurry from the house to the backyard, perhaps without tripod, snap a quick photo, and retreat back into the warmth of the cottage. Said scurrying is especially true when it happens in winter, but even autumn mornings, as above, can be a bit nippy.

I managed a bit of time out in the garden this afternoon, before it clouded over and got nippy.

Just enough time to catch one of our Collared Doves visiting.

Thanks so much to Cris of Nippy Kat for this darling dress set...with the basket of flowers! We love it!

♫ Sam Ock - Winter Has Come ♫

Here we go.

Trees are barren, and it’s nippy outside

Bears are sleepin’, and the birds have taken flight

The folks are covered, head to toe

Trying to keep warm from all the cold

Birdies ain’t chirpin’ in the morn

So now I will sing their notes

And we know that

Winter has come today

Winter is here to stay

Winter has come and

I am waiting for it to snow

And with you by my side, yea

I’ll stay warm

Skies are cloudy, can you feel the cold bite

Indoors we’re rowdy

From dawn until the dark of night

People seem bitter and moods are cold

Weather and feelings, friends of old

So we gotta stick together because

We know how the story goes

Yes we know that

Winter has come today

Winter is here to stay

Winter has come and

I am waiting for it to snow

And with you by my side, yea

I’ll stay warm

Rooks leaving their rookery in a small copse behind our house, on a crisp morning.

Just saw the forecast for much of the USA and this appeared on my screen.

Warning: This image may make you feel cold, slippery and occasionally a runny nose will follow. Please go to my previous pics for some warmth...therapy!

Slightly too nippy for eating outside at Dungeness today.

This is in North Devon by Saunton Sands beach ... it's wonderful .... had a great day messing about in the dunes and later on the beach ... bit nippy but at least the rain didn't catch us!

A colourful consist leads daily Brownville-Montreal freight 251 through Farnham on a gorgeous, nippy January afternoon. Since CP has taken over from CMQ, the mainline through town is no longer within yard limits, and trains can cross town at track speed. Consist : CMQ 3812, BNSF 8087, CP 8759, CP 7022.

2nd January 2021:

A is for apple.

Not long after lunch, when I'd settled down to do more of my knitting, the sun came out. At first I thought "knitting" and then changed my mind and said "walkies." So glad I did; although it was jolly nippy, it was lovely and sunny and a pleasure to be out again. Can't remember when I last had a good walk.

On my way home I saw this apple in a garden and knew I had my 1st A for the "Alphabet challenge" theme. Great to see a decent looking windfall, although I don't think I'd have picked it up to eat it!!

I had one full day of camping on my way to visit family and I could not have asked for a better day. Calm to start and calm to end.

This spot was steps from my campsite and I traveled back and forth over the early evening snapping the ever changing sky. This was the last for the evening.

The only thing this picture does not show is the coolness in the air. Overnight it got down to freezing (0C, 32F) so it was definitely nippy. But I could not have been happier being in this spot (camp fires help too :))

A day on the beach...some sit...some surf...some build sandcastles...and some brave souls swim, despite the sea temperature being a bit nippy!

textures thanks to PaintedWorks.

there is a sad postscript to 'a day on the beach' In the last week or so, several lives have been lost in tragic accidents at various beaches around the UK coastline. My thoughts are with those who have lost family and friends.

My thoughts are also with the people in Italy affected by the recent earthquake...so many lives lost.

While pulling stuff out of the attic, the sun was coming through the window and lighting up some frost. I had to grab the camera!!

This is a handheld shot. I may try and go back with the tripod. But it's really cold up there. It's 7 degrees outside now with temps going down to -15 tonight! The wind chills will be 20-30 below zero! Nippy I'd say!

15 min. @ f5.6..... a westerly view of a familiar shore-line.... the moon has been up for about an hour, and is 92% full.....

the red lights in the distance are from the windmills and the terrible glow is from the Windsor-Detroit area...

a thin sheet of ice helps to reflect the star-trails..... -5C and a bit of a nippy breeze, but still, a beautiful evening on the beach....

On Black

Stanley's breath shows it was a bit nippy this morning, but it soon warmed up!

The UK's cold-snap held on long enough to hit the weekend - which gave me chance to nip out (and it was nippy)and capture a few shots from some local frozen woodlands.

Sunrise at Low Newton by the Sea today, these Jigsaw rocks are great when the tide is higher, Dunstanburgh Castle visible in the distance, lovely morning but a tad nippy on the finger ends

Look at this! I've had to change my description of this type of frost ....it is not hoar frost, but what is called rime frost. There has been some moisture the past few days in the form of fog and this is what Wiki says~~~

~~~~Hard rime is a white ice that forms when the water droplets in fog freeze to the outer surfaces of objects. It is often seen on trees atop mountains and ridges in winter, when low-hanging clouds cause freezing fog. This fog freezes to the windward (wind-facing) side of tree branches, buildings, or any other solid objects, usually with high wind velocities and air temperatures between −2 and −10 °C (28 and 14 °F).[6] ~~~~~~~~
Then it snowed on top of that ... I guess the frost on the trees caught and held on to some snow too ... now it is thick on the branches and needles of the pine trees like this...so beautiful..... it's on all the trees...but, some are just more fluffy looking than others... this one was spectacular!
It's -20C this morning, so pretty nippy out there ..... but, I bundled up in parka and toque and ... well forget mitts or gloves; you can't take pictures wearing them.... so my fingers got good and cold!
I can't get onto the golf course through my neighbours yard in winter...she puts out a sign meant for me.... Do Not Enter ..on her gate to her backyard.... she is worried about a lawsuit I imagine. It does get slippery and dangerous...
But, I walked up two blocks and along a back alley as I knew I could at least see onto the course from there...and, lo and behold..I spied a large double vehicle gate that was held with chain and lock, but ajar enough that I could squeeze through. Hah! I wandered around for 39 photos worth and then, was too cold to hang out much longer.
I was hoping a coyote or deer might show up as I did see lots of animal prints.... but, cross country skiers and snowshoers also use the area for recreation...so probably they don't show up too often. Although, today, being a bit colder...I didn't notice anybody but me.....
Now, I'm gonna make me some hot chocolate !! I deserve it!
It was a tad nippy up on top of Blencathra at sunrise last week. Or as my friend Dale would put it, "It's f**king Baltic!"
Anyway, he joined me on this grand adventure, so I heard that phrase echoed a few times, and I may even have uttered it more than once myself. It certainly was true though, as the Met Office reported a bone-chilling temperature of -17oc up there at that time of day, especially with the biting wind chill.
It was certainly worth braving the elements for though, especially for this cracking sunrise as the gentle warmth of the first morning light bathed the frozen terrain in a lovely glow. The hill fog swirling around the summit also created some enchanting fleeting moments as the vistas kept fading in and out of view. I found myself particularly drawn to this perspective looking down towards Doddick Fell from just below the summit, with the cornice and drifts of snow providing some striking foreground interest.
A truly epic morning!
A bracing Skipton plays host to Northern's new CAF unit 331012, out on test with the 11.08am Skipton Broughton Road CS - Shipley - and return (5Z72). In the meantime, named storm Ciara is making her presence felt with a mixture of wind, rain, sleet, and some very nippy temperatures - I was certainly glad of the full thermals and thick socks that day.
The passengers, including me, have just alighted at bay platform 1 on a service from Leeds. It's hard not to enjoy the splendid Midland Railway architecture just here, happily of Listed status, and one of the main reasons for the visit. If you zoom in you can make out the tall and elegant finials on top of the glass canopies - splendid details!
This is a re-do of a photo that's more than four years old. Man, was it cold that day... but freezing my hands and my ass was well worth shooting this pastel sunset.
It was so nippy overnight the top of birdbath froze leaving these amazing icicles on the underside.
Winter is hanging around this year too, we had a similar snow just the other nite.
Transport for Wales 'Skip', presumably 67014 judging by the livery, makes its way over Frodsham Viaduct as it heads the 9.53am Manchester Piccadilly - Holyhead (1D34) on a bright but still nippy early spring day.
The train was running to time just here, and indeed as far as Bangor, but still contrived to arrive in Holyhead some 22 minutes late for some reason.
The first time I've uploaded a shot from this spot, although I've taken a few here which, for one reason or another, didn't make the cut. Better viewed full screen.
10.40am, 9th April 2019
Since it's a wee bit nippy outside I thought this would be a good day for something taken during a long cold spell we had back in 2013. Set The Wayback Machine for December 7, 2013 Sherman, Snoqualmie Falls. #waterfallwednesday
The Surf is definitely their turf. If you disagree you can try to get pass them but you may find the conditions a bit nippy.
A chilly start to the day on Rannoch Moor looking towards Glen Etive.
A sandhill crane graces the skyline on its way back to its nesting site in the marshes which lie just beyond the trees.
As you may be able to tell, I awakened the canoe yesterday and, while a bit nippy, it was good to be out. This event was not without incident. It is quite a steep drop to the water and a chore to hoist the craft up every year, turn it over, and tie it off to a tree. On the other hand, returning it to the water is quite easy as a chute of sorts has formed over the years and, once turned over, the canoe glides smoothly down into the water. All one needs do is keep a firm grip on the rope. Need I say more?
I watched bemused as the rope and the canoe went quickly down the hill and headed merrily toward the middle of the lake. I had simply let the rope slide right out of my hand. I stood there wondering what I could have been thinking, quickly coming up with the obvious answer...nothing relative to what I should have been. More importantly, I had no idea of how I was going to retrieve it with the water temps what they are and strongly discouraging wading.
After a few seconds of again cursing getting old, I realized that the slight wind was pushing it toward a spot at which I might intercept it if I hurried...that definition (like mental acuity) also changing dramatically as yet another consequence of aging. Heading toward the spot through the trees, I was pleased that I only fell once, tripping on something under the leaves, and arrived just in time to catch my escaping canoe before it headed for destinations unknown. Tying it off, I realized how truly lucky I was that the prevailing winds were exactly what they were and returned to the house for a well-deserved and necessary nap prior to this year's maiden voyage.
Some of you may remember that I left a note on this Kia Pride earlier in the year. A few days after leaving the note, I received a call back from the 97 year old owner, who kindly invited me to view the car, with him remarking that he plans to give up driving soon. He stuck to his word and in July, called me saying that he has now decided to hang up his keys and sell the car. I jumped at the opportunity and went to collect the car today! It’s a fun little motor to drive with a nippy 1.3 engine! I have been wanting a MK1 Kia Pride for a long time, so I am delighted to have got this one!
With storm clouds out to the east and a face full of sun to the west, D93 does their switching in Logansport on this nippy May evening.
We are having a white Halloween. It is a little nippy. Will the kiddo's show up?
The main reason for our little sea faring adventure the other weekend was to see if we could spot some puffins...And I am happy to report we did, although they were pretty tricky to capture, nippy little things. How cool would it be to run on water!
A rubbish sunset tonight, but I was up on Car head so I threw on a big stopper and did a 3 min exposure, then brought it back to life in viveza 2. Its starting to get a bit nippy up there now! oh, and I was treated to a display by the Red Arrows on the way up there...which was awfully nice of them!
