2023 Photo 184/181 Some years ago I got my wife a little gazing ball, and she keeps it on a windowsill. Inside it, it's always summer. 2023 John M. Hudson
2023 Photo 172/193 Still looking for the right setting for a commissioned landscape of the Maury River running through Goshen Pass in northwestern Rockbridge County, Va. There was more water after a couple of days of rain, but not much of a sky and none of the fog that I was hoping for. Still, this isn't such a bad photo if one concentrates on the river rocks, the trees and the reflections. ©2023 John M. Hudson

Unusual letterbox and ye olde fence outside Toogoolawah in prime cattle grazing country, South East Queensland. Happy Fence Friday.
The trains once passed closely by this spot on the way up the Brisbane River Valley to Yarraman but the line closed many years ago. At one stage, nearby Toogoolawah was the end of the line for a train a day down to Ipswich but the numbers didn't add up to retain it. Now much of it is a rail trail.

Sit and watch the action at the Aqua Warrior Water Park in Clontarf, Redcliffe. Was a beautiful day looking out into Bramble Bay, an offshoot of Moreton Bay in Greater Brisbane. SOOC. HBM.

The diet is mixed, but the basic diet is granivorous.

Another surprise awaited me when I stepped out on a beautiful sunny morning. Opposite my mobile home, two owls were perched on a tree, well hidden by the foliage. I came back a little later, one of them had moved slightly, making itself more visible, this is the one I'm showing you. How lucky, because the next day they were gone.
I said this week would be low key as far as flickr goes and really, just low key in the mad weeks before Christmas. We had a spare day today so locked it in for ourselves and ended up heading down to the City of Redland which abuts Brisbane on its southern boundary.
We took the ferry over to Coochiemudlo Island (otherwise known as Coochie) which is just a ten minute, 50 cent ferry ride from Victoria Point.
Coochie is more like a dormitory suburb of Greater Brisbane as are a few other nearby Moreton Bay islands but as you cross the sea for that short period, it's like going through a time warp. It's one laid back island and one of our secret diamonds in the Bay.
The day was warm, no doubt the water near high tide was too and there were a lot of high school leavers enjoying the beach and activities. Sadly, we just had some morning tea then made our way back. Don't tell anyone I told you about it 'cos it's our secret!
Comme tous les papillons, le vulcain récolte le nectar des fleurs.
Les papillons se nourrissent en aspirant ce nectar avec leur trompe.

Like all butterflies, the red admiral collects nectar from flowers.
Butterflies feed by sucking up this nectar with their proboscis.

Although the song is so melodious, it serves as a warning to its fellow robins.

But what joy and luck to be able to photograph the turtle dove before its migration.
It is rather shy and difficult to observe, always hidden in the foliage.
The Turtle Dove has been in continuous decline globally since the 1980s.
In Europe, no less than 75% of the workforce has disappeared in thirty-five years.
This decline is, in part, due to hunting, particularly during migratory passages.
After being cooped up for a few days, I was finally able to get out to a local marsh. It's a spot where Western Grebes often hang out, and I wasn't disappointed. I found a family busy teaching their young how to fish.
Getting a good shot of them was a challenge, though. Grebes usually keep their distance from the water's edge, but I was determined. I used my 600mm lens and switched my camera to DX crop mode, which gave me the equivalent of a 900mm lens.
The downside was fewer pixels to work with, but it was worth it. I'm happy with the results, and even more so that I got to watch these beautiful birds... and enjoy a peaceful, joyful sunrise.

Le Rougegorge familier se présente comme un petit oiseau rondelet, avec des ailes relativement courtes atteignant péniblement le milieu de la queue.
