Perhaps helpful information for users of the Nikon D1 series:
There are now EN-4 Li-Ion replacement batteries available to buy; according to the description you can charge them with the original Nikon D1 series MH-16 charger, although the charger is meant for NiMH batteries.
Since this charger is more expensive where I live than the camera itself, I can't say anything about it.
But as the information on the D1 series EN-4 Li-Ion replacement battery (Li-Ion 7.4V 2100mAh) is very similar to the information on the Nikon EN-EL3e (D200/D300/D700) battery: Li-Ion 7.4V 1500mAh, you can charge them with the MH-18a charger (meant for D200/D300/D700), by simply connecting the contacts together.
Short: I charge my EN-4 Li-Ion replacement batteries by connecting the battery contacts to the Nikon MH-18a charger (D200/D300/D700) contacts with 2 cables.
Of course, try it at your own risk, I am not responsible for fires and/or similar accidents. Try it for the first time in a barn or someone else's house :-)
May the brave be rewarded with a working D1/D1h/D1x with no more battery issues.
But I think it is safer to charge a Li-Ion battery with a different Li-Ion charger, than with a charger that is intended for NiMh batteries.
