There are records, and then there are relics. And when my nephew—DJ Nobunaga, a globe-spinning architect of breakbeats and sound systems—gifted me an original pressing of Bateria by Robertinho Silva for my birthday this year, it felt like receiving something holy, something that shouldn’t even still exist in circulation. No reissue. No repress. Just the real deal. And in this house, that means everything.
Who Is Robertinho Silva?
Born July 1, 1941, in Rio de Janeiro, Robertinho Silva isn’t just a drummer. He’s a rhythmic prophet. A percussionist who carries the language of the orixás in his hands and translates it into jazz, samba, funk, fusion—whatever you want to call it. But in truth, Silva transcends genre. He has played with everybody—#MiltonNascimento, #WayneShorter, #JoãoDonato, #GilbertoGil, #AirtoMoreira—yet he’s always unmistakably himself. Raw. Earthy. Sophisticated. Tribal. Urban.
Silva is one of the few Brazilian musicians who can move effortlessly between traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms and post-bop improvisation. His drumming is both ancestral and futuristic, technical but spiritual. On Bateria, he invites you into a world where every hit of the skin tells a story, a protest, a prayer.
You can have all the Blue Notes, all the Tropicalia, all the Fania, all the CTI pressings. But if you don’t have Bateria, your collection is incomplete. It’s the missing brick in the foundation. The ghost behind the groove.

Because I'm going to the concert of our highest Brazilian music legend, Hermeto Pascoal, on July 29th, I decided to share music from that country with you every day until that big event.
José Roberto 'Ze' Bertrami (February 21, 1946 in Tatuí; July 7, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian musician (piano , keyboard), composer, arranger and bandleader in the field of bossa nova, fusion and smooth jazz.
Bertrami, who was best known as the leader of the band Azymuth, had classical piano training and was influenced by the jazz pianist Bill Evans. At the beginning of his career he played keyboards in Luiz Eça's band Tamba 4, who became an important mentor for him. In 1965 he released his first solo album and then worked with Flora Purim and Robertinho Silva before meeting the drummer #IvanConti, with whom he formed the band Azymuth in 1972; the third member was bassist #AlexMalheiros. The band recorded a number of successful albums for Milestone Records, such as Light As a Feather and Telecommunications; their biggest hit was the song Jazz Carnival. Bertrami left the group in 1988, but began working with them sporadically in the early 1990s. In the following years he worked as a composer and arranger for, amongst others, Brazilian rock bands such as R&B and Pop, with Chico Buarque, Toninho Horta, Eddie Palmieri, Marcos Valle, Jorge Ben Jor, Sarah Vaughan, Elis Regina, Mark Murphy, Joe Pass, Erasmo Carlos, Milton Nascimento, Airto and Flora Purim.
