There was originally a Hills / Ames / Steve & Barry's store located here. In 2014 Cinemark opened a "NextGen" location here to replace the older Regal Cinemas at the mall. The old Regal location still sits empty.
The River Valley Mall opened in October 1987 with 627,046 square feet of space. The original anchor stores were Lazarus, JCPenney, Elder-Beerman, Sears, and Hills Discount Store. In 1989, a adjacent strip mall was added to the River Valley Mall complex and was anchored by a Big Bear grocery store (closed 1999 and later became Hobby Lobby). Other restaurants were built around the ring road at that time as well. A Target store was added to the adjacent strip mall in 1995. Over the years; Lazarus became Lazarus-Macy's, then Macy's, then closed in 2007, then became Dick's Sporting Goods in 2010; the Hills store later became Ames, then Steve & Barry, then was demolished for a new "NextGen" Cinemark cinemas that opened in 2014. The River Valley Mall still has all of its anchor store slots filled, which is a good sign!
