I would just like to take this opportunity before the revelries really start, to wish you, my Flickr friends and followers, the very best for the New Year!
Thank you for your support, encouragement and comments. Thank you for your friendship and also for all your wonderful photographs!
May your New Year's Eve be an elegant and festive one, however you are celebrating this year. If you are fortunate enough celebrate it with others, may those others be people you love and who love you.
May 2023 be a happy, prosperous and artistic year for you all.
I took one of my 4th of July fireworks images from 2017 and went into DDG and did this. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year!
Thanks for views, comments and favs :)
Dedicated to all my friends and followers. Thank you for all the support throughout the year. I wish you all a successful and happy new year. This is actually three of three of the shots I took. The two from the Same shoot I’ve already posted in last weeks. Slightly edited differently using the raw to really push the light and shadows.
When the world is dreary and miserable outside I take solace in warmth and comfort indoors. Some delicious and indulgent chocolates from Hotel Chocolat definitely help! Wishing everyone all the best for 2022…
PHOTO NOTE: I took this shot with the Nikon D850 at David Walsh’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart on November 2, 2019. This tunnel reminded me of a time machine. I converted the RAW file to monochrome and then added colour toning.
Happy New Year. Live in Hope!
REFLECTION
Vortex
1: something that resembles a whirlpool
“the hellish vortex of battle”
— Time
From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
"For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." – Hebrew prophet Hosea 8:7.
Is the future determined or truly open? Are human actions taking us towards some pre-determined goal, or merely creating the appearance of agency? The Greeks had a term for this goal orientation of history or what some scientists today call the “arrow of time”: “Telos” . This is where the philosophical term "teleology" comes from. In fact one of the very earliest Western philosophers, the Priest of Apollo known as Parmenides plato.stanford.edu/entries/parmenides/, believed that in the whole context of the Cosmos (i.e. everything that is or Eternity) nothing really changes.
In relation to the conservation of energy this is absolutely true. We merely live in a world of appearances that is constantly passing away. Forms change, but as Plato would have us believe, that doesn’t amount to a hill of beans when all is said and done. And yet sentient life is so precious that EACH INDIVIDUAL SOUL IS WORTH THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. [As I type this I’m listening to Coldplay’s latest album, The Music of the Spheres – a very Greek idea – and specifically the song, “My Universe”.]
The world of Spirit was before and will remain long after this material universe has passed into oblivion. Now this is a double-edged sword: It is at once our hope and a challenge. The ancient prophets always took the side of Parmenides, that this world is somehow merely a station on the way to greater things.
“Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also… Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are? And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life? Why do you worry about clothing? Think about how the flowers of the field grow; they do not work or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these! And if this is how God clothes the wild grass, which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven, won’t he clothe you even more, you people of little faith? So then, don’t worry saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the unconverted pursue these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But above all pursue his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So then, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.” – Jesus of Nazareth, Matthew 6:19-21; 25-34.
The day will come when we truly KNOW (gnosis) in fullness (pleroma), but for many this will then be too late to make our lives on earth actually mean something. The one thing that is certain about the future of the material world is death and destruction. The fundamental Law of Entropy in Physics shows us that. So the only way that a life here and now can meaningfully shape our future is when we stop living for the now and start living for our Eternal Future.
At the dawn of this New Year I’d like to recommend two books whose authors are worlds apart, and yet converge on the same fundamental idea: HOPE.
* Peter Kingsley, “In the Dark Places of Wisdom” (Golden Sufi Publishing, 1999).
* Jürgen Moltmann, “In the End – The Beginning: The Life of Hope” (Fortress Press, 2004).
At 95 years old, Moltmann of Tübingen, Germany, may well hold title to the world’s greatest living Christian theologian. And this book is one whose time has come right now.
The theme for “Looking Close… on Friday” for the 31st of December 2021 is “New Year Cards”.
This postcard, published by Raphael Tuck and Sons in 1904 features the faerie tale of Hansel and Grethel. Chromolithographed in Bavaria, it one of a set of six faerie tale postcards in this series to celebrate Christmas and New Year. I do hope that you like it, and that it makes you smile.
I know that like 2020, 2021 is a year many of us would rather forget, however I'd like to end the year as I started, on a positive note. There have been many wonderful things that have happened in the second year of this world pandemic, and some of those things I have found on Flickr this year including beautiful images, lovely stories and connections with old and new friends. I'm grateful for all of those things and more besides. Thank you for the smiles and laughs! I sincerely hope that you find something to smile and laugh about this New Year's Eve.
I'd like to wish all my Flickr friends and followers the very best for the New Year. Thank you for your support, encouragement and comments this year. Thank you also for all your wonderful photographs!
May your New Year's Eve be a festive one, however you are celebrating this year, and if you are fortunate enough celebrate it with others, may those others be people you love and who love you. May 2022 be a happy, artistic and prosperous year for you all.
Season's Greetings to All My Flickr Friends!
=======================================
New Year's period in Romania is unique. Ancient times customs are piously kept in the countryside.
There are more than 2000-year-old customs from the Dacian ancestors mixed or overlapped with Christian's traditions
Each role and performance has a special meaning attached to the past cultural reality of Romanian villages.
The most colorful New Year’s Eve traditions are however the mask-dances, magical ceremonials of death and rebirth, with a variety of representations from the animal world like goats, horses or bears, fictional characters like the devil and symbolic personages like the ugly, the beautiful, the elder, the military, the gypsy, the bride, the emperor and many more.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Jago is a recent addition to my ever-growing family. A gift from a dear friend in England, he is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Well the start of the year has been troublesome in some parts, but let's hope it will even out pretty soon.
*****
I have a personak tradition of buying 'doll of the year' each year :) It started and continued with Barbies on Mackie mold, my favourite from Matter. But the previous three years it was other dolls. And I felt I wanted to return to Mackie.
This year it is 2001 Winter Classic beauty. I find her outfit a little off, because of the long dark artificial fur. It's somehow unbalanced being abundant in the upper part of outfit and lacking in the lower one. But it's still Mackie, and I wanted a similar girl to the Winter Evening Barbie which is on the left. She was my doll of the year in 2016.
