“And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

With my new camera in hand,

I headed directly to the intersection

of Laurel Canyon Boulevard & Victory,

where I first met Doc, and have seen him

several times since.

As soon as I got there, I saw him across

the street, disappearing into the distance

rapidly

across the vast sea of a Sear's parking lot.

I went to follow him, but first saw

Marvin Gunn, and was compelled to

photograph him first.

Then I went to find Doc. I saw him

slip like a beam of light

around the far corner of the giant

rose-hued Sears. I followed quickly

behind him, trying to catch up. When I

turned the corner, he wasn't there. I was

worried I had somehow lost him, but kept

walking, and then there he was, in a doorway

behind the big store.

I went up to him and said, "Hi, Doc,"

and he greeted me, and said, "You've

got to help my sister and me." Previously

he told me he needed to find a husband for

his sister. He also told me he needed to get

his mother out of her grave, though I told him

that didn't really seem like the greatest of ideas.

"Where is your sister?" I asked.

"Not far from here," he said. He had

a box of cigarettes in his hand - some

weird brand I didn't even recognize - and

he told me he had to stash it in his bag of

belongings. There on the ground, in a corner

at the back of this building, was a big plastic bag of

clothes and other belongings. He deposited the

cigarettes, and I asked him if I could take his photo -

he said sure, and I told him I had a new camera,

though this made little impact.

I asked him where he slept, and he said he slept

right there, though he spent more time in the front of

the store.

I asked him how old he was, something I

have wondered about, and he said, "92."

"92?" I said. "You can't be 92."

"Well, I was born in 1938. Whatever that makes

me. 72?"

It makes him 67 - though I couldn't

calculate that in my head. He started talking

about the chief, and said, "Can't tell you his

last name, though." And he called me

Sheriff, as he had before.

He showed me his hands, which are

covered with tattoos, and his arms, which

are solid purple, and I asked him when he

got all his tattoos. "A long, long time ago," he

said, and opened his shirt to show me his name,

Doc, emblazoned on his chest in red, along with two

purple hearts.

I took many photos, which I will share in

the ensuing days, and he spoke of other

things, and said, "I've been talking to

your father's son."

I told him I loved him, cause I do. I know

he is not of sound mind, but he's a sweet

man, and always warm and kind.

He returned the sentiment, saying,

"I love you too, man. A lot."

"Life and God are one and the same. You are God's child. God would never close all the doors around you. His unlimited love and compassion wouldn't allow Him to be that cruel. God always keeps more than one door open, They may look as if they are closed, but they have, in fact, been left slightly ajar. Just a mild knock is enough and they'll give way. But our eyes are blinded by our ignorance. We fail to see the open doors through which the light of God's grace is pouring in."

--Amma, "Awaken Children! Vol IX ", pg. 162, copyright MA Center

"No matter what difficulties we have to face, we should always have the awareness that we are resting in God's lap, and that we are safe in His hands. This attitude will help us to overcome any adverse situation."

--Amma, "Matruvani", April 2000

"You don't belong to the dark. The darkness is a prison created by your own mind and ego; it is self-imposed and self created. it is not your real abode, for you belong to the light. You are the light of God."

--Amma, "Awaken Children! Vol VIII", pg. 83

“God, come to my help. Lord quickly give me assistance. You are the one who helps me and sets me free. Lord, do not be long in coming.”—Psalm 69:2,6

"May my mind come alive today

To the invisible geography

That invites me to new frontiers,

To break the dead shell of yesterdays,

To risk being disturbed and changed."

One Step at a time . . . . . . . . . . . .

Many who follow me here know this woman as well, but just in case you don't, let me tell you about her.

Tina is an Artist. She teaches art, she lives and breathes art, she creates art. She inspires. She is a giver.

There is a project called "100 Possibilities" where the aim is to take one object (whatever you want it to be) and photograph it in 100 different ways. I've seen some amazing work come from this challenge. Tina, being the artist that she is, began with a work of art: a handmade ceramic bowl (made by a dear friend of hers). She traveled with that bowl all over the country. She put all sorts of things in the bowl, and placed the bowl on top of all sorts of other things. She was up to day 92 when it happened--the bowl broke.

And then the little seed of a miracle began to germinate. Lessons learned and then transformed.

Tina came up with the most beautiful idea...and she created yet more art. Pendants of the pieces of the bowl, now jewelry for the cost of making a donation to an organization to feed the hungry.

The bowl is now a story, a lesson, over a hundred pieces of art, and a literal giver of life for some hungry families.

Is that not one of the most beautiful works of art you've ever seen?

Excalibur, one of the sacred objects of the Grail, represents the power of awakening to a new potential, the consciousness of creation inside us. Stored within the earth, the stone of life, released as a key for the unfolding of new possibilities, bringing hope in a time of change. The potential for the awakening of the universal mind that lies within us all.

My first street photograph

since the happy purchase

on this happy day

of a new camera. (My first

actual shots today were of

my son and wife. )

All these previous

photos on my stream were taken

with a little point-and-shoot, with

much computer editing. Now I have a

camera that lets me do what I've

always wanted to do.

With my new camera in hand,

I went out walking in search of

Doc, he of the multi-tattooed face

and hands and arms, previously

photographed and included here. I knew

Doc would be an excellent subject for

a new series of photos with the new camera,

and I have seen him frequently around one part

of North Hollywood, so I headed there.

Upon arrival at the spectral intersection

of Victory and Laurel Canyon, I saw the

fleeting image of Doc across the street,

rapidly walking away from me. I ran to the

light to cross the street, as Doc scurried

away across the vast parking lot of a Sears

store.

But as the light changed, I saw this man -

Marvin - crossing towards me, and I saw

his smiling face and felt his happy

countenance, and turned around, and

followed after him.

I asked if I could take his photo,

and with delight he said, "Yes, you

can!" And he smiled brightly at me,

and I took two quick shots - quicker

than I could ever take before -

and I asked his name, and he said,

"Marvin Gunn." I thanked him,

and my first new street portrait

was

preserved.

New Possibilities has worked in Partnership with Gill Phillips of Whose Shoes? for about 10 years. Capturing lots of conversations and perspectives where people have engaged in improving the experience of the health and care services they receive. During Covid 19 we are looking to find ways of taking those conversations online and capture them for people to share through a graphic record.

This is a test run, using zoom as our platform and offering live graphic record of the conversations that took place.

So what is the first step? How does one get started? How do we begin to create an English classroom that explores more "modes of representation" than "language alone" (New London 64). William Kist attempts to give six areas of classification for a new literacies classroom. I will attempt to discuss them in my own interpretation.

First, is ongoing and continuous usage of multiple forms of representation (712). As discussed in the previous section, all types of representation would be looked at and created in this classroom. These could include, movies, scripts, plays, blog posts, music, art, etc. The language of the modes would be understood and used by students to create their own pieces. Kist says the teacher would becomes like a "coach of human expression" guiding students to find the best way to communicate (712). The relationship between the medium and the text would be central to student work, as they evaluate how that interaction enhances the project. The process of creation would be very valuable to student learning as they analyze mediums to "detect patterns, [form] and [test] hypotheses, and [integrate] knew knowledge with previous understandings" (Condon 273). Constructing what writing means in this way will solidify knowledge for students.
