According to the GSMNP website, Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina "is the only route that completely traverses the Great Smoky Mountains National Park." Scenic overlooks along this drive offer spectacular views of the Smokies. The overlook at Newfound Gap, where this shot was made, is the highest point along this drive. It is also a place where you can stand on the dividing line between Tennessee and North Carolina.
On with my newfound love for astrophotography and our quests are expanding to daily roadtrips. It's not always easy. Not as easy as I thought at least! It needs commitment, focusing on the goal, anticipation of the elements and good planning to follow the stars and the Milky Way in particular, but it seems ever since I took my first photo of them stars, I'm always looking out for them! Anything less seems just... less! Ohhh well, it's a phase I know. This too shall pass. Till then I'm enjoying every single moment of the chase and the adventure that comes with it!
This one was taken on a daily roadtrip to Galatas, some 170Kms outside Athens. We've been there recently, yet we went again to shoot for the Milky Way this time. This meant we should be around driving from spot to spot all night long, for a period of almost 4 hours, in which the window of opportunity to get our shots would remain open! We weren't absolutely sure of the weather though, but we went for it anyway and it favored us with the clear skies we needed. In this photo one can see the tail of Via Lactea rather than the center, yet I liked the angle so I went all in for the shot! Now, that got me started and made me want to get similar shot with the center of the Galaxy in it! But that's coming next!

there is a beauty found in nature on Earth…that is untouched by any human being…but rather praised as God-made…
Newfound Gap Overlook is nearly a mile high and straddles the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Print Size 13x19 inches.
Newfound Gap, zoom into North Carolina Smoky Mountains
The name of the area comes from the natural haze that often hangs over it. As in the neighboring Blue Ridge Mountains to the east, hydrocarbons produced by trees and other local vegetation — as well as higher humidity — produce a bluish cast to the sky, even over short distances
This pretty view can be seen from the scenic turnout just east of the main overlook for Newfound Gap in the Smoky Mountain National Forest.
Newfound River Waterfall at Bristol Falls
A bit of scrambling was required to get this shot. The falls flow under the walkway on the trail giving this interesting view.

View my previous photo to see the other chick watching this one leave the nest. Something was up with my views on Flickr yesterday. Both great horned owl chicks were branching yesterday evening and flapping away! So much fun to watch!

Newfound Like & Grey Rocks Conservation Area Outing in Color
10/24/2023
Canon 60D with Canon 18-135mm IS STM
After trying a new restaurant for brunch, we turned north and visited the Grey Rocks Conservation Area. We had driven by it a couple of times, but never stopped.
A former marina, the land was donated back in 2011 and with much effort, returned to a mostly wild state. The park has some nice benches, picnic area, and boat launch (canoes and kayaks only as I understand it). The trails are quite wild, and there is a wildlife viewing platform perfect for shooting waterfowl pictures (if only I had brought my bird lens).
We had a nice time, the autumn colors and reflections were lovely. We hope to return there sometime before the snow flies.
Hope you enjoy!

Newfound River at Bristol Falls Park
One of my favorite locations, the recent rain gave for a decent water flow for this image.
