The image was shot during my New Year's Eve shooting session in Wellington, New Zealand.

This shot was not easy to take. I am telling the story of this shot in a short blog article. "The difficult ones - Street portraits of scary people."

I met her sitting on a little wall opposite to a music bar on New Year's Eve. She was slightly drunk and told me the story of her and her husband going to the music bar to listen to a band together. Apparently she had had a few drinks too many (she did not elaborate exactly on what had happened) so that the bar security ushered her out telling her she could come back when she had sobered up. She bought herself a coffee and sat down on that little wall and waited for soberness to arrive. Instead I arrived with my camera and asked her if I might take a few shots of her. I liked her story that she told in a funny way. But what really touched me where her eyes....

The blog with an article about shooting street portraits of "difficult people" (she was clearly not one of those).

This is the start of a little street portrait series shot in Wellington, New Zealand last night, on New Year's Eve.

Maybe I should make you aware that what these two girls are performing is not only expression of alcohol drenched New Year’s Eve spirit but indeed a very rudimentary Haka. Haka is a traditional Maori ceremonial dance that is even nowadays being taught in New Zealand schools. So it’s a very Kiwi way of showing the NYE spirit. For more information please see this Wikipedia article about the Haka. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka

What I really noticed was that all younger people immediately took a photo pose as soon as they discovered me standing in from of them with my camera. They are all Instagram trained. No shoot without the "necessary pose". This happened to me I guess around 10 times that night. Incredible.... :-)

There's glitter on the floor after the party

Girls carrying their shoes down in the lobby

Candle wax and Polaroids on the hardwood floor

You and me from the night before, but

Don't read the last page

But I stay when you're lost, and I'm scared

And you're turning away

I want your midnights

But I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Day

You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi

I can tell that it's gonna be a long road

I'll be there if you're the toast of the town, babe

Or if you strike out and you're crawling home

Don't read the last page

But I stay when it's hard, or it's wrong

Or we're making mistakes

I want your midnights

But I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Day

Hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you

Hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you

Hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you

And I will hold on to you

Please don't ever become a stranger

Whose laugh I could recognize anywhere

Please don't ever become a stranger

Whose laugh I could recognize anywhere

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

SCOUT: "Goodness Paddy! Look at all the pretty ribbons! What is it?"

ORSON: "It’s so beautiful! All sparkling gold and silver and blue!"

BOGART: "And listen to the music!"

DANNY BOY: "It sounds like it’s time to sing!"

DUCKIE: "What is all the flap and twitter?"

DAISY-MAUD: "What's happening, Jago?" *Covers eyes with paws and snuggles against Jago.* "I’m scared!"

JAGO: "Oh you don’t have to be scared Daisy-Maud." *Puts arm comforting around his little sister.* "It’s something lovely!"

DAISY-MAUD: "It is, Jago?" *Uncovers eyes and looks up.* "What is it?"

ALGIE: "I think I know what it is, Daisy-Maud and Scout!"

SCOUT: "What is it, Jago? What Algie? Paddy what is it? Tell me please!"

PADDY: "It's New Year's Eve, Scout!"

SCOUT: "New Year's Eve! Already! Hoorah!" *Jumps up and down excitedly through the sea of curling ribbons.* "Quick! I need my Little Red Riding Hood tea set that Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear gave me for Christmas, so that I can celebrate in style! Are you ready to celebrate too, mijn beste vriend Peter? We can dance into the New Year with Spencer and every other bear that wants to join in."

DANNY BOY: "And I can sing in the New Year with a special old Oirish Air!"

ORSON: "I might join you, Danny Boy. If you don’t mind, or course."

DANNY BOY: "Of course not, Orson! The more the merrier! Let’s all sing!"

JAGO: "I wonder whether tonight I will be asked by Odessa to dance with her again." *Blushes pink beneath English mohair fur.* "I danced with her last year."

BOGART: "She loved dancing with you last year Jago. You are a very good dancer. I am sure she will ask you again."

JAGO: "Thank you so much for the compliment, Bogart!"

DAISY-MAUD: "I will watch you and clap, Jago!"

ROSIE: "I am going to dance with mijn pris Peter if you are going to dance with Odessa, Jago!"

SCOUT: "Oh yes! We can all dance, Rosie! Come on!"

FREDDY: "Do you think we get special treats to eat at New Year’s, Algie?"

ALGIE: "I’m not sure, Freddy. Maybe?" *Shrugs shoulders.*

COUSIN PADDINGTON: "Now is also a good time to reflect on the passing year and celebrate the new year as it begins."

BOGART: "Oooh! It looks like this New Year is going to be fun!" *Joins Scout jumping up and down with excitement.* "And I have my best friends, Fuzzy and Danbo to call out to. Hullo Fuzzy! Happy New Year! Bleep Bleep-bleep Danbo! Bleep… luv Danbo!, We are going to have a wonderful time!"

PADDY: "Oh yes! We can dance and play, laugh and cheer!" *Starts dancing.* "Come along Oleg, mijn best vriend and everybear friend we have! Let's all dance!"

DADDY: "Australia is one of the first places to celebrate New Year, so Paddington, Scout, Cousin Paddington, Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Rosie, Orson, Danny Boy, Algie, Freddy, Duckie and I..."

SCOUT: "And my Little Red Riding Hood dolly, Daddy!"

PADDY: "And Scout's Little Red Riding Hood doll, Daddy!"

DADDY: "And Scout's Little Red Riding Hood doll are getting into the spirit (and champagne) early!"

SCOUT: "Champagne Daddy?" *Looks concerned.* "You said I am too young to drink, and if I am, then Dolly certainly is!"

DADDY: "Well Scout, that's true for Dolly, but we can make a special exception tonight for you. You may have a very small glass of very good quality champagne. I will put a glass out for you, Cousin Paddington, Bogart, Jago and for Paddy."

PADDY, SCOUT, COUSIN PADDINGTON, BOGART, JAGO DAISY-MAUD, ORSON, DANNY BOY, ALGIE, FREDDY and DUCKIE: "Oh thank you Daddy!"

DADDY: "Happy New Year Paddy, Scout, Cousin Paddington, Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson, Danny Boy, Algie, Freddy and Duckie!"

Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, includng the one who gave Scout to Paddy.

Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.

Travelling all the way from London, Cousin Paddington was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a long while. That makes me happy, as the more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.

Freddy Fox is made by Merrythought in England. I bought him, of all places, from a men’s accessory shop in Melbourne’s Block Arcade, called Mr. Wares. Freddy Fox is made of English Mohair with felt paws and glass bead eyes. He has so much charm and charisma that already he is winning hearts with anyone whom he meets, and he is kind and sweet, which makes him an ideal member of our family.

Daisy-Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.

Orson, named after the little bear constellation was made by the same friend who made Jago and Daisy-Maud. He comes ready dressed in 'trousers' made of German mohair accessorised with embroidered braces. His paws are ultra suede and his eyes are glass. He is described as being a little bit serious minded but very friendly. He's fine once he gets to know you.

Danny Boy, made by the same friend who made Jago, Daisy-Maud and Orson, has a touch of the 'Oirish' in him with his emerald green scarf. He has an open mouth as he likes to sing and comes with his own songbook, "Irish Airs for Teddy Bears". He has a wobbly head to give him animation when he's talking to you, is made of English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. Quite a hfappy-go-lucky little character....

Algie is made by the same friend who made Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson and Danny Boy. He is is made of sparse English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. A very adventurous little boy, he loves to climb and sit on top of gates, edges of tables and chairs. He adore climbing trees, and will cheekily sit there with crossed legs. He's very friendly and he loves adventures of any kind. a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Duckie I saw when I was at a Sunday market on a stall of homemade knitted and crocheted items. She caught my eye straight away with her happy, smiley face and bright colours. I think she finds life with my bears intriguing and perhaps a little confusing, however she is learning.

We couldn't use the usual table because the cat was in attack mode underneath, and checking out the food on top of it. So we used the kitchen counter.

This is the site on which John Wright Shipyards and 5 large company sawmills had stood since 1875, each of them burnt down during the course of their lifetime.

1886: The first fire occurred in 1886, which destroyed the original sawmill built by John Wright after he founded the business in 1875.

1905: The second fire struck in 1905, severely damaging John Wright's rebuilt sawmill.

1944 : Sunday 21st May 1944 - A third fire destroyed Ernest Wright's sawmill (** See report below)

1951 : A fourth fire destroyed another sawmill, this time under the management of John Wright Jnr. A new electric mill was built in 1954.

1958: The final fire occurred in 1958, again under John Wright Jnr's management, with the 4-year-old electric mill burning down.

With John Wright & Co Shipyards struggling to attract wooden ship building contracts, combined with a decline in timber availability, the electric sawmill was not rebuilt with this also leading to the closure of the shipyards in 1958.

These fires were significant events for the local Tuncurry community with John Wright & Co sawmill and Shipyards being the biggest employer in the area and therefore a very important contributor to the local economy for 83 years. (1875-1958)

## It is worth noting that sawmills were particularly vulnerable to fires in the past, and spontaneous combustion of sawdust piles was a significant risk. The combination of heat, pressure, and microbial activity within tightly packed piles of sawdust could lead to a rise in temperature, eventually igniting the material. This, combined with the highly flammable nature of timber and machinery used in mills, made fires a common and devastating hazard for these operations.

John Wright founded John Wright & Co in Tuncurry in 1875 after selling his one third share in a sawmill he was a partner in at Bungwahl, just south of Smiths Lake.

He selected Tuncurry (North Shore) as the place where he could follow his dream to build his own sawmill and shipyards. By 1878 John Wright had also established a large sawmill at Avalon, near Krambach. This sawmill was managed by his eldest son, Sydney Garden Wright, until it closed in 1919.

When John Wright died unexpectedly in May 1910, without leaving a will (Intestate), another of his sons, Ernest Wright, assumed control of John Wright & Co's shipbuilding and sawmilling operations at Tuncurry.

Due to the rise of steel ships and a new competitor, the railway arrived in Taree in 1912, Ernest Wright struggled to keep the company viable even though he built some of the finest wooden vessels to sail the NSW coast, right up till his death in January 1946.

Allen Taylor, owner of the North Coast Steam Navigation Company, and a good friend of both John and Ernest Wright came to the aid of John Wright & Co after WW1 when the company was struggling to compete with steel ships and the railways. Taylor, as owner of the North Coast Steam Navigation Co., awarded a number of major ship building contracts to John Wright & Co between the two world wars while also being a major purchaser of timber produced by Wright's sawmill.

It wasn't just Wrights that felt the impact of technological disruption. The North Coast Steam Navigation Company also closed down in 1954. This company had been trading up and down the NSW coast since it was founded in 1891.

Allen Taylor was a prominent politician who served 2 non-consecutive terms as Lord Mayor of Sydney (1905–1906 and 1909–1912) and also as a member of the NSW Legistative Assembly.

Below is a report which appeared in The Northern Champion newspaper, Taree, NSW on Wednesday 24th May 1944.

The article reported the total loss of John Wright & Co's Tuncurry sawmill on Sunday night 21st May 1944 due to fire. The sawmill had been built 40 years previous to this date and was an important employer of men in the Tuncurry district.

Nine partly finished 'small ships' being built on contract to the US Army by Ernest Wright Shipyards, had been sitting on the slipway, along with £2000 of prime timber stacked on the company wharf. Fortunately, all were able to be saved.

** May 21st 1944

Disastrous Tuncurry Fire

WRIGHT'S SAWMILL GUTTED

"A serious blow to the shipbuilding and timber production industry of Tuncurry occurred on Sunday night (21st May 1944) when the big mill of John Wright & Co. was completely gutted by fire. The origin of the fire is a mystery, as there was no sign of fire in the building when an inspection was made at 7.30p.m.

However, half an hour later nearby residents were roused by the fire which appeared to have broken out in more than one spot, and within a comparatively short time the building was blazing like an inferno, and completely defied the efforts of the voluntary fire fighters to quench the flames. Long streamers of

flame shot ever 200ft above the building, illuminating the country for miles around. Sparks from falling rafters rose over 1000ft. in the air, and passengers on the Taree-Forster bus observed the sparks and glow of the fire when miles from Tuncurry. The whole of the mill structure was totally destroyed, together with most of the valuable milling plant, including saws, two planning machines, belts, benches, etc. Fortunately, the boiler, which is bricked in, was not so extensively damaged. The mill was erected 40 years ago, and with its associated shipyard was one of the principal sources of employment for men living in Tuncurry. When it was evident that nothing could be done to save the main building, the fire fighters successfully concentrated their efforts on saving the slipway, on which there are nine partly constructed boats, and also £2000 worth of

timber stacked on the company's wharf, adjacent to the mill. With the aid of a pump mounted on a log punt, a stream of water was continually played on the stack of timber throughout the night, and as a result the whole of this valuable stock was saved. Good work was also carried out by a bucket brigade.

It was fortunate that the evening was calm and damp after light rain earlier in the day, otherwise the fire may have spread to adjacent waterside structures and homes. In a telephone conversation with our representative, Mr. Ernest Wright stated

that the damage is estimated at £4000 or £5000, only a part of which is covered by insurance. The replacement of the building and plant will be difficult under present conditions, and as the

firm has been engaged on important contracts associated with the war effort, the fire has come at a most unfortunate

time. We are informed that about a fortnight ago a small fire was discovered in the same mill by Mr. A. McBride who was able to summon assistance in time to prevent any damage being done. Much sympathy will be felt for the firm, in their heavy loss, and the interruption which must necessarily be caused to their business."

A drizzly and at time rainy evening marred the 2022 New Year's Eve celebrations in Tuncurry - Forster.

I've never seen John Wright Park so quiet and even the carnival operated on limited numbers.

Was it covid that kept people at home or was it as simple as the inclement weather.

This shot was taken from the top floor of Tuncurry's Sunrise Apartment building just before the annual fireworks at 9pm.

I attended a New Year's Eve party there and the balcony deck provided one of the best views over Wallis Lake in Tuncurry Forster.

The traditional fireworks were excellent as always, but best viewed from the Forster side due to a large Norfolk Island Pine Tree obscuring part of the view from Sunrise.

This shot is a composite of 4 images which were automatically composited in Google Photos.

I did also attempt a few handheld panorama shots but this one seems to be the better than most of those.
