Happy New Year, here's to a 2023 that brings renewed civility and healing to ease our world's suffering and recognize our interdependence with all life.
This was around 40 minutes before sunrise this morning on a cold and frosty pier.When I got there this was the sight which greeted me and I was full of hope for a cracking sunrise but sadly the colour quickly faded .Love this shot though,trying out my new soft grad filter. It's my favourite place on the pier .
On New Years Day, slightly above freezing with some rain on the lake ice with very limited snow. It would have been dangerous to attempt skating out there as it was so wet and possibly risk of dropping through the ice. However it fully froze over night making it safe to skate.

It's been a very busy day as my cleaner, Sharon came and had a Christmas dinner with me. I had most of the ingredients from a company that produces excellent ready meals called Cook foods which reduced some of the work. Still a lot to do for an 86 year old but Sharon came in time to help with the last part. As I don't have a lot of oven space I decided to do my own roast root vegetables in the slow cooker which meant I was up early to see the sunrise. The meal was delicious but I was very exhausted!

My wife gave me a Canon Digital Rebel XTI for Christmas. I am delighted by the gift and my new camera does things that my Canon Powershot A620 could never do. But the Powershot is a great camera too and it does something the Rebel could never do -- fit in my pocket. Since 90% of the fun of photography for me is the "found moment," I expect the Powershot to continue to be a very heavily used camera, despite the arrival of the Rebel.
This is a crappy picture, of course, but I kept it because it is literally the first photo taken with the new Rebel, full auto, point & click, no alterations.
The sun performs fiery pyrotechnics with the atmosphere as it forges the first sunrise of 2025 from the vantage point of Cathedral Rocks, Sedona, Arizona.
We attempted to experience this hike a few days previously and were thwarted by general ignorance and a lazy, late start to our day. When I circled the roundabout to make the turn off the main road and down to the trailhead at about 10:30 in the morning, we encountered a man in a brightly colored vest and a row of traffic cones strategically placed to block the road. Evidently we had failed to appreciate the logistics needed to undertake this hike during an epic crush of holiday tourists.
Stung by ineptitude, we regrouped and resolved to rise early and make the hike to the viewpoint for sunrise on New Year’s Day. Arriving at the trailhead before any light was visible on the horizon, we noticed several other vehicles already parked. Original ideas are apparently hard to generate. There is one section on the route to this viewpoint that requires hands to negotiate, and our young pup was not at all pleased with the situation. With camera gear on my back, I tucked him under one arm and climbed up with my free hand. He is 45 lbs now (20 kg), and if he gets much heavier he’ll be on his own to figure out issues such as this in the future.
Not long after gaining the viewpoint, which sits between the two sandstone buttes that comprise the Cathedral Rocks formation, the sun began to breathe light into the sky on the desert horizon. Another family and a few smaller groups milled about making soft exclamations. It is a fine thing to be alive and sentient in this vibrant world.
And a finer thing to leave this world better than when we came into it. Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day to all.
